"No final PS3 launch plans until mid-September" - Sony UK (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=18968)CentreSoft in talks with retailers over pre-release plans

Sony UK has insisted it is still at least a month away from finalising PS3 roll-out plans, as official UK distributor CentreSoft confirms it has been testing the water on controversial pre-release initiatives with the retail community in preparation for the November 17th launch.

GamesIndustry.biz has learned that CentreSoft called a meeting two weeks ago for leading indie games retailers in order to gauge their views on a number of hypothetical launch scenarios. The distributor plans to utilise the feedback in order to best represent indies' interests when Sony confirms it launch plans for the UK.

CentreSoft managing director David Neal confirmed to GI.biz that the scenarios discussed included what might happen in the even that Sony implements its controversial GBP150 pre-order scheme, and how the system could work to ensure parity and fairness of allocation across the board.

“This was a CentreSoft meeting and doesn't represent Sony official position in any way,” Neal said. “We wanted to canvass the opinion of indies on a number of 'what if?' scenarios - but we're as much in the dark as everyone else on Sony's plans”.

One retailer present at the meeting, speaking under condition of anonymity, explained how the discussion on the pre-order scheme sought to explain how it could work to guarantee day one stock for vendors.

“The brief was: guaranteed day one stock - if I take 400 orders I get 400 on day one, not the launch window. But to ensure that we'd have to give up the whole deposit to Sony,” the retailer said.

Speaking to GI.biz, a Sony spokesperson confirmed that the meeting was an independent CentreSoft initiative, while revealing that formal plans would not be confirmed until next month.

“We and Centresoft are trying to work as closely with our trade partners as we can to ensure a smooth launch. We have not announced our launch plans and probably won't be doing so until mid-September,” the spokesperson said.

“This is in large part because there are many unknowns we need to resolve before we complete our plans. One of these unknowns is production and production quantities.”

I don't think this has been posted:
GameStop Unsure of PS3, Wii Launch Numbers

Games retailer GameStop said today that it will not be taking PS3 and Wii pre-orders until it has a better idea of how many systems will be allocated to its stores; 1 million PS3s, 750,000 Wiis predicted for overall US launch.
In a Q&A session during GameStop's quarterly financial conference call, David Carlson, executive VP and CFO of the company explained the amount of Wii and PS3 units he expects to hit US shores for the consoles' Q4 launches.

"...We're looking at around a million units of PS3 in the US, which is somewhere around half or less than what Sony has said [would ship worldwide]," he said. "With the Wii, we're looking at around 750,000 in the US. We believe at this point, that could be a light number. It's hard to say, though. We remain conservative until they actually show up at our warehouse."

GameStop vice chairman and COO Dan DeMatteo added, "We're not going to take pre-orders until we have some more and clearer information from both Nintendo and Sony in terms of likely launch quantities for GameStop. We don't want to do what we did last year, which was to take way too many [pre-orders] on the 360, and then under-deliver. We want to get closer to keeping a promise to the consumer."

GameStop expects Nintendo to divulge Wii launch figure information sometime this month, but the company's not too sure when Sony will reveal numbers. "We'll know Nintendo's [Wii launch numbers] before Sony's," said DeMatteo.

Analysts also inquired what would happen if PS3 launch quantities fell short of expectations. "[Last year,] the 360 in short supply had an effect of freezing the market," said DeMatteo. "But if you look at it, there wasn't anything new. I mean, there weren't any new platforms out there, so the 360 was the newest thing in the last four or five years. This year, there will be a Wii and there will be a 360, so I can't believe that it will have the same kind of impact that the 360 [shortages] had."

The hardware-filled holidays could spell trouble for any manufacturer that can't meet demand. As DeMatteo said, consumers will have more options this holiday if their system of choice is sold out.

As for the rumored Microsoft Xbox 360 bundle, DeMatteo said that he hasn't heard anything about it. "I could be out of the loop, but I haven't heard of one," he said.

1 million units for the US is quite a lot IMO. :)

I just want to be in the top 10 of any preorder list...
I was lucky number 7 for the 360 preorders and got mine on day one.
There's no way I'm camping out for a console, it just won't happen!

Lucky you Nameless, my position on camping out is it's just something to do. It's like when they camp out for Star Wars, I know I'll be at the Sony Store on Nov 17 which is a friday so that's cool.
