First in a series of unveilings planned for Leibzig

***** caught up earlier this week with the good people of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe for a quick chat about all things PlayStation and we are pleased to let you know that the frustrating post-E3 wait for proper information on our PlayStation future is just about to end, with the first in a series of major announcements being made this coming Monday from Leibzig.

We can assure you that this first unveiling will, shall we say, be something you are very unlikely to have foreseen, coming from way out of leftfield. Suffice to say it brought a smile to our face as we think it will do yours. Check in here first thing on Monday when we’ll be able to disclose the full details of this announcement, as well as picking up the first tasty news droppings from all the other publishers at Leibzig.

It would also seem that Sony has seriously taken on board the many criticisms targeted at the company following a poorly received E3 PlayStation 3 showing and done what it does best – gone into lockdown mode whilst its development and marketing teams get on with the serious, hard work of ensuring that both the PS3’s technical offering and the marketing message are both spot on for the looming 17th November launch.

3.2Ghz CPU, 500Mhzish GPU, 512MB total memory, to everyone the machines seem the sodding same except for the Blu Ray. For a machine coming out a year after it's competitor it's too samey....

Now back to business. At E3 of 2005 we gave you some basic specifications for the PS3 and it's components. We told you about the Cell processor and it's amazing ability to crunch huge numbers. We told you about the RSX and it's power to synthesize truly realistic graphics. Also, we told you about the FlexIO bus, the Blu-Ray drive, and many other features. That was a very exciting day!

But, sadly. I have an admission to make.

We lied. Well, sort of. No... not really... (Walks around for a moment and then makes a tiny gesture with his fingers.) Well, maybe only *that* much.

Basically, at that time we were in the early stages of development for the PS3. Our hardware was not finalized, the RSX had not been tapped out, the components had not been put into mass production, and we really didn't know the exact yields we would get. Additionally, we didn't have everything completely figured out yet. Basically, we gave you an estimation. A best guess so to speak. But we knew there would be changes, and today we are openly admitting that.

The GOOD NEWS is that the changes are for the better, because we have been able to put together an a console that is beyond what we told you last E3. The specs have went up and more features have been added.

Now, it's time for me to be frank with you.

The Cell processor is no longer running at a clock speed of 3.2GHZ, but at a full 4.0GHZ.

The RSX was originally going to only run at 550MHZ, but through careful engineering with NVIDIA we have been able to push that up to a full 600MHZ. But we must note that there are other tweaks we added to push the RSX beyond that of an ordinary PC part. We added additional texture cache, tile cache, and other features listed in the booklet handed to you at the door detailing these special features and others. Currently, the RSX is the best performing single cored GPU on the planet.

Also, in our push to provide you with bright, crisp, and stunning 1080P resolution graphics we have increased the memory of the PS3. We are now offering a full 1 gigabyte of RAM. 512 for the Cell and 512 for the RSX.

These features are exciting, and there are others, but due to time constraints we simply urge you to go through the booklet we have provided you. Now, we have several very special presentations ready to showcase these specification enhancements, and we shall begin with....

But it's just a hopeful fantasty and a guess that at least a few specs will be improved to go beyond that of the 360 and to account for the launch delay. If they disclose the specs of the RSX I'll be happy regardless!

The only thing that scares me are the reports that the PS3 actually has worse textures than the 360 because of memory limites.... so number 1 priority should be 256MB jump.

Sony's been listening to all those negative remarks about the PS3. Specially, the two most common ones are: The price and the rumble.

So the two major announcements could only be those two things: A price reduction and the added feature of rumble. edit: Been thinking about it and a fundamental change to either the SKUs or price seem most likely. Both would be unexpected and would explain Sony's stance on preorders. Hopefully they eliminate the crappy SKU and lower the price $100.

My prediction is, coupled with the fact that the developer "Starbreeze" stated in an IGN interview about "The Darkness" about taking advantage of the tilt controller and a feature they can't talk about" and since this artilce has been removed. Leads me to believe that every PS3 will come with a HD-Eyetoy. With an eye toy being part of the overall package, every developer can take advantage of it, it also gives them another advantage in how you can play games ala the Wii. And it will shut all those people up who are talking about the price and rumble.

I will tell you something that would be coming out of left field for all of you...

Instead of secrecy and smoke/mirrors they make a big fan fair of "PS3 Specification Day" and detail the specs, don't leave stuff out, show tons of slides, and take tons of questions. In the process they would reveal that several specs were increased even if just slightly.

Seriously, after all the talk of downgrades in the media I think such a day would be very exciting and scare the mess out of Microsoft.

The truth is Sony could spend a certain ammount of time or have one person holding a press conference about the specs and technology of the PS3 while later that day, the next day, or for all we know at the same time they could show games.

They can give us BOTH the game footage and of course the specifications and technical data.

There is no reason they can't give us both, and I think this would be a great surprise.

Next week is Leipzig and Sony has officialy announced that there will be two major announcments and one of them will be Monday.

I hope one of them is the full specs of the system including those of the RSX. Personally, I think the true specs with a ram upgrade would be great.

I like the idea of mouse and keyboard support for games. We NEED serious RTS games on consoles! Pikmin just doesn't cut it. Even a port of Rise of Nations/Legends or Age of Empires III would get me really excited.

It could be something strange, like an official partnership with MLBTV.com (think out-of-left-field) to stream baseball games live on PS3 or perhaps a partnership with itunes...

Maybe make the DVD drive RW and include burning software?

These seem like "smaller" yet still surprising possibilities. Perhaps this has something to do with that piece of harware Square-Enix was making...

I beg to differ...and this is why:

Sony pretty much invested in us as gamers as early as PS1.....now when ps2 came along..they talked about toy story graphics...you see....gamers everywhere noticed this push by sony to put out unbelievable graphics....now they bombarded our minds with this....so you better believe im expecting KZ2 to be just that.

This is just kind of like when Nintendo said there was something special about the Revolution. 1) an 80 gig HD has been mentioned elsewhere, but it's hardly left field.
2) As for a keyboard and mouse, I bought them for my PS2 years ago (hardly a big announcement, even if they're wireless as standard).
3) A free game, is that the most left field you can go?
4) No Blu-ray = suicide (for both the format and the PS3)

Conclusion = Think again.

I'm just hoping rumble returns. I'm kinda excepted the price. THe graphics will be slightly better than 360's-not $100 better but hey, better is better, and I like the tilt feature as it isn't completly different like Wii yet some innovative features will still be implemented.

The PS3 is not the Wii nor is it trying to be. An eye toy doesn't need to be w/every system. That's what the Wii is for! When u feel like flapping and swinging ur arms pointed and throwing-that's when u pick up a Wii. Rumble being put back in would be the complete PS3 package. A price drop is cool but I'm not expecting one. I don't see the need to change specs when first party games are already looking as good as they are and it's obvious that PS3 will be the dominant console as long as they get the software support. How about some software that makes Ipod and Itunes compatible with PS3!! Now that is more like it!

Uh oh, we won't still be seeing 1995 offline rendered graphics for a while. I'm not a graphics artist but I assume the most excruciating task with good quality computer graphics is realistic lighting. Developers are already able to fake a lot regarding different realistic real time lighting techniques but it won't still be possible for a while to calculate and render everything lighted with "real" subsurface scattering and such techniques. They are so ridiculously calculation intensive that a basic games playing person can't understand it.

But everything moves onwards and the games we have already seen shown embrace many techniques impossible to do with the "previous generation" of consoles. So that's what I'm waiting for the most: developers doing as well as possible by time what is to be done with this brave new generation.

Any other good revelations are just extra for me.

I think they are saving most new game demoes for TGS, as the closer to launch the better they will look. Sony also still has two very alive platforms PS2 and PSP that they don't want to be shadowed by the PS3 to much before PS3 launches. Leipzig may be the last time those games will be in the lime light almost by them self. :shrug:

I personally don't see how a built in Eyetoy would be feasible to be honest. Not everyone is going to want to position their PS3 in such a way that the Eyetoy is able to see them. I want my PS3 in the same spot, beside the TV with the Playstation 3 logo facing me! :)

I would prefer if the EyeToy2 was a wireless bluetooth device so you easily could place it on different spots depending on the game (like in "Eye of Judgement" where you'd rather want the camera to focus on the table you're placing the cards).

Beats me. I can't really see what it might be. I don't think it's an eyetoy (supposed to be released in spring 07), magic wand? don't think so you already have motion sensitivity, rumble? well not impossible but.., keyboard and mouse, probably adds to much cost.

What's left? Some upgraded spec of the hw, well that's certainly not the feature Starbreeze were hinting about.

I really hope Sony will surprise the living daylight out of me, that would feel so good after these months of news draught. :cheers:

About the EyeToy 2 being wireless, isn't that the only way Eye of Judgement would work? Apart from it coming with a ridiculously long cable, which I don't see happening.

Also, if we assume that PS3 will only have 4 controllers, that leaves 3 free Bluetooth connections.

It's the lighting that makes the big difference...
CGI uses global illumination and consoles use lighting trickery to emulate global illumination. The next-gen consoles can throw tons of polys out their, but the lighting will always keep CGI ahead of the game.

Once we accomplish "true" global illumination during real-time graphics the gap will be reduced significantly...

Note that things only look great at a significant distance as well as a different resolution on last-gen consoles. Heck, the same applies to the consoles before that in comparison to last-gen. Now would you say that this game is slightly inferior or on par with the GTA series of last-gen or no? I would yes.

We are increasing the performance of our computing systems, but not exactly the way it's been originally expected: the megahertz (or shall we say gigahertz) myth is now indeed just a myth taking next generation computing into an entirely new direction. PLAYSTATION 3 is one of the first next generation systems to move in this direction utilising the revolutionary Cell Broadband Engine developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM to provide massive computing power consisting of multiple cpu cores on a single chip.

The PLAYSTATION 3 provides a parallel architecture that requires advanced, multi-processing aware applications in order to make the most of the hardware and software design available. This presentation demonstrates the new challenges for developers when developing for multi-processing systems as well as techniques used to solve these problems.

Oh, I do believe the RSX and CELL are going to be more than powerful enough to work well in the PS3. But just out of curiosity I am facinated with the RSX and the specs of the PS3. It's one of those things where whatever they are I am not going to be upset, but I just want to know what they are, regardless.

I am just very curious what they are going to turn out to be, and hope they will be at least part of one of the announcments.
