Something I heard while pre-ordering

Okay, here's the story. Today, I wewnt down to the electronics store in Copenhagen, and saw that they had just opened up for pre-orders of the PS3. I was already 6th in line in another store, but it couldn't hurt to ask. Now, the guy in the store said that I could be no. 2 in line, which I immediately accepted. But there's the interesting part.

When I asked the guy what model it would be, he said that it would be 5000 kr, and would ship with an 80 GB HDD. BTW: Considering the usual price differences between the US and Denmark, 5000 kr amounts to 499 USD.
Normally, I'd just take it as employee stupidity, and dismiss it. But there are a few reasons why I don't.

1. This guy owned the store.

2. When I asked him if he was sure, he said that the guy from Sony, who came to put up pre-order decorations(which also featured an actual empty PS3. And yes, I was allowed to touch it.), program the PC to accept pre-orders and deliver the pre-order DVD's you've all heard about, told him.

3. The final devkit has an 80 GB HDD, so isn't it realistic that the PS3 could too?

4. As you all know, Sony will be announcing quite a few things at the upcoming convention in Leipzig. The timing seems very consistant, don't you think?

Now, I'm not very convinced myself, but it is a possiblity, so I thought I would tell you guys. If it turns out to be bull, that's it, and I'm sorry.

DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP, AND DON'T BLAME ME IF THIS ISN'T TRUE.
(But I do expect mad +rep if this turns out to be true...)

that is a pretty interesting coincidence that both the store owner and dev kits have 80 gigs. but no offence or anything, im not going to get my hopes up and just go by sony's official site until they say otherwise.

btw, you're lucky for being able to pre-order already!
I'm trying to ASAP but stores want to be difficult about it lol.

Only the Scandinavian countries have pre-orders so far, but you'll get them soon. But don't be angry that we're first for once, I think that this is the first time EVER that Scandinavia has been a priority for Sony.

Also, DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP!!! I don't want to be blamed if you get all hyped about this.

Always interested to find out what size the drive will be I'l be selling on ebay. :)

60GB sata drive goes out... 500GB sata drive goes in... :) Looking to store 100 game demos, arcade games, and music and video collection.

But yeah, I look at my HDD suppliers and they don't sell 60 or 20GB sata drives, smallest, cheapest drives they make are 80GB.

1 single SKU, 80 GB HDD, $499 (with HDMI, WiFi, multiple card reader and silver trim?)

If true, that would be really awesome. I won't get my hopes high anyway.

At least in Scandinavia, yes. He said that the smaller version would come later, like with PSP's Core Pack, so I guess they'll be using the same model, where Europe doesn't get the cheap version that the US and Asia does.

But please note that 499 USD is with all of the Danish taxes removed. The price is more ike 999 over here.

Very interesting, there is scope for the HD size to change before launch.

I doubt that this means there will be a single, cheaper SKU, but Sony have pandered to public opinion before on this project (with the gamepad design & standard inclusion of the HD), so I wouldn't rule it out either.

This makes a lot of sense, Sony does not want to bring the price down, so to make it seem more worthy they upped the Hardisk drive which is relatively easy and cheap to do, Ingenious !!
Works for the general consumer, although us hardcore people might have preferred RAM.

^^@Rizon: It would mean that there would be only one version of PS3 sold everywhere in the world. At this time they have announced 2 versions: 1 with 20 GB HD for 499€ and 1 with 60 GB HD, Wi-Fi functionalities, Mem card readers and HDMI output for 599 €. In Finland they have announced the more expensive price to be 650 €.

Well hopefully this is true, even though, I'm not getting my hopes up that high.

They may do this...

Bump the 20 GB to 60 GB in the $500 sku.

Bump the 60 GB to 80 GB in the $600 sku.

Because if you think about it, it probably cost them the same to build a 20 GB HD as a 60 GB. I don't even think there is a 2.5" 20 GB HDD left on the market.

If they don't bump it to 60 GB, they may move it to 40 GB in the $500 sku.

Pretty strange i could pre-order a PS3 already last weekend (Belgium). I didn't have any cash with me that day. Maybe i'll go by tomorrow (sunday 20th).

So i went to the store and pre-ordered mine they asked fee of €50, i paid €100. And asked a couple of questions like if it was the highest model etc. They told me it was the €599 model with HDD 60GB and all other things, and that the other version was coming out later. I'm 6th in line. And seems like today many others were ordering because behind me a couple of people were asking to put a pre-order too.

Not true. I'm in the U.S. I've been able to pre-order now for almost a months. I'm not though, due to to me not having the money, and also I'm going to wait to mid-2007.

Yeah the posters were there, that's how i knew they were taking pre-orders. Only the live-like model was missing. There were just a square box, with the PS3 on it and "Pre-order here" over the PS3, and some posters hanging around with launch date 17 November and pre-order here.
It's not really a gaming store, maybe that's why it has less decorations. It's a mediastore with movies, music and games.

i just phoned up my EB games & spoke to them about MY ps3 and they told me im first on the list :) :) and i can even take my old PS2 & games in to knock some price off the PS3 :)
