View Full Version : Your Music Collection
How many tracks do you have in your music collection? I have around 15,000 - 16,000+ and it grows every week.

iTunes tells me I have 1147 which I would assume as accurate. There is still some other shit that I did not include in my library just because I won't be listening to it. But I'm all about the podcast now. Smallest collection so far.

On iTunes I have...9603.
But all of my live concerts aren't on iTunes, only full CD's.
And that's like forty gigs of Phish, some Jeff Tweedy, some Beck, some Ben Harper, and some Violent Femmes.

This is what you people call as music collection nowdays? Jesus christ. MP3's are nothing compared to a real music collection. It takes no hard work to obtain a rare album, all you do is fucking download it. No respect.
Here's mine: http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/mtuomika
Eh, MP3's for the win. I don't have the space for anything else and I've already got like 300 CD's clogging my back room up.
MP3's are good in the respect that you can find something that you might not have neccesarily found anywhere else. About 75% of my music is stuff I've discovered just by looking at places like Amazon, and going to the "People who bought this also bought these" section, and then seeing if I can find them online.
My plan is to buy all of the albums that I have, but for the time being, I simply can't afford it. Of the 500+ albums I have on iTunes, I think I own about 145 of them.

I believe what Mauler is saying is not that mp3s are bad per-say, but that they're like cheating with regards to a music collection.
Like using infinite ammo in a game.
The bullets are just given to you, as opposed to you actually making an effort to find them.
I would quite happily buy all of my downloaded music if I wasn't poor :(

As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as "cheating" in regards to a musical collection. If you get kicks out of looking for rare Vinyl or CD's that's absolutely fair enough, but I myself, get a kick out of going to last.fm, having artists recommend to me, downloading them and then realising that the Internet has given me, and millions of others, the ability to hear pretty much any song they want from around the Globe.
Exactly.
I've discovered so many artists through the Internet. At some stage I will get all of my albums, because I feel that I'm at least supporting the artist by getting their albums. But if I can't discover them in the first place, then it's never going to happen.
Internets. It's teh revolution baby!!11 lolz

Firstly, I never said that downloading was "cheating", I said that it is "like cheating".
Similar to, but not actually.
Nextly, trust me, I know that downloading music is an amazingly robust form of musical discovery.
Nearly my entire range of interest has began and developed from downloading mp3s.
But nobody is arguing against downloading mp3s to experience a wider range of music.
My point is that the more effort you put into something, the more rewarding it will be.
Downloading mp3s requires very little effort.
Digging through hundreds of crates to find one rare vinyl EP or single will be far more satisfying when you finally do find it because you would have invested much more of your time and energy into this one goal.
Lastly, in sport, winning via forfeit is not impressive whereas winning via an evenly matched game is.
Watching a film is more enjoyable than having someone tell you the ending.
Canned food tastes better when you prepare it yourself.
Writing an essay for a class and recieving a good mark is more rewarding than copying an essay and recieving the same mark.
Debating a point is more interesting than the answer being immediately definitive.

However! You can't download rare music of any worth. Not in my experience, anyway.

MP3's are very cool as in sharing music and listen to them before getting the real thing. But they are no match to a real music collection. That is my point. MP3's are just temporary solution before paying to the artist for the work they've done.

Compared to a record or even a casette for that matter MP3's sound like a dogs breakfast.
However! You can't download rare music of any worth. Not in my experience, anyway.
I also find it very hard to find music from artists that aren't as well known.

What P2P program do you use?
Do you use Soulseek?
If not, you should try using it.
Because I find that I can find more obscure music on it than on other P2Pers.
Soulseek! (http://www.slsknet.org/)
That's where I have recieved most of my mp3s.
Those that aren't from CDs anyway.
I use BitTorrent. I tried using SoulSeek a few years back, but for some reason it would never download anything I wanted.
Maybe I'll give it another shot.

I tried to use Soulseek once and it didn't work. My computer crashed.
I think I'll try again.
