Television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died after being stung by a stingray while filming off north Queensland.
Known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter, the 44-year-old was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!''.
The Queensland Police Service issued a statement saying Mr Irwin collapsed after being stung at Batt Reef, Low Isles off Port Douglas about 11am. He had been filming a documentary.
"Steve was hit by a stingray in the chest,'' said local diving operator Steve Edmondson, whose Poseidon boats were out on the Great Barrier Reef when the accident occured.
"He probably died from a cardiac arrest from the injury,'' he said.
Police said that, after the stingray attack, Irwin's crew called for medical treatment at 11am and the Queensland Rescue Helicopter responded with a doctor and paramedic on board.
Puncture wound
Mr Irwin had a puncture wound to the left side of his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Mr Irwin's family has been advised and Irwin's body was being flown to Cairns.
It is believed his American-born wife Terri was trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania when the incident happened.
Police in Tasmania say she has been informed of her husband's death.
The Irwins have two children, an eight-year-old a daughter, Bindi Sue, and a three-year-old son, Robert Clarence, usually known as Bob.
When asked if he had ever heard of anyone dying from a stingray barb Matthew Hurley, general manager of Quicksilver Group, whose company has taken tours to Low Isles for 26 years, said: "No, definitely not."
"We've never heard of or been involved with anything like that."
Ross Coleman, acting director at at University of Sydney Institute of Marine Science, told smh.com.au it was "quite rare" for someone to die from contact with a stingray and he couldn't recall hearing of another incident.
Stingrays were "dangerous if provoked", he said.
"As a recreational diving instructor you hear of people getting injured by standing on them ... but they rarely die."

I reacted the same way.
That is definately a terrible shame. He was a great entertainer and informer for many fascinating animals.
That's one of those deaths that really gets you because he was one of those youthful, daring characters you see in life that almost build this reputation of invincibility to injury or death. So when they just get killed instantly like that all of a sudden its rather jolting.

That is shocking. Although we should kind of expect it in the line of work he does. We just thought after he had done it so many times before and never been injured that he was kind of immune to animal attacks or something.
Goodbye crocodile hunter.

I didn't care much for him reinforcing the 'ocker' stereotype, but it gave me an indicator of which foreigners are idiots (the ones who think all of us talk like that).
But he did so much for environmental causes, and raised awareness in alot of issues that needed it. There is alot he accomplished, and alot he could have done if he didn't die today.
RIP.

Yeah he over-reacted sometimes but i think that was so people would shut up and listen to what he had to say, he has done so much for wildlife conservation and everything that he has gotten out of it, he puts back in. Its so sad that his little children will have to grow up with out him, My thoughts are with his family.
The Crocodile Hunter will always be my hero. Rest in peace, Steve. :cry2:

Wow, that is pretty suprising. Not that he died in the making of one of his documentaries. But that it was a stingray that did him in, I was always expecting a lion or croc or something like that.
I used to watch his shows from time to time, he was pretty cool.

I used to always watch his show on Animal Planet, when I was growing up. I too was shocked, when I found out the news today. I too thought he was invincible.
And whats sad too is, he left a 3 year old son, and a 8 year old daughter. I'm sure his son and daughter (and wife Terri) will keep the tradition going of wildlife conservation.
RIP steve, you will be missed!

I found out at like 1 A.M. PST at one of the worst places... 4-Chan. At first I thought it was a joke but there were links to various news sites. His wife is from my state and neighboring city. He once flew to the Hospital here and had some surgey and my mom got a picture or two as she worked there. But damn.
I am officially mourning him on my first day of school.

I'm, I'm speechless. I used to watch his shows and the way he presented them were very imformative and friendly. He was one of my icons and heros. He was also a nice person and loved nature with a passion. I knew one day something would get him but not like this man. I will truely miss him and I feel deeply sorry for his children and wife.
He will always be known IMO as the real crocodile hunter and died by what he loves and die as a true legend. R.I.P Steven ''The Crocodile Hunter'' Irwin.

As for the whole family legacy thing, have any of you guys seen Bindi (his daughter) talk? They just had an interview with her on TV, I tell you what she talks bloody well for an 8 year old. Not a speck of shyness in her. She's definitely going to end up like her Dad.

Call it morbid fascination. Like when people slow down to look at a car wreck.
I know I'd watch it if I had the opportunity. Not because I want to see him die (that part would suck quite badly), but I'd just be interested to see what happened.
:wtf: :wtf: :wtf: .... Needless to say, Steve Irwin SHOULD have died after fighting 20 or so 30 foot alligators inside a pit of snakes with just his legs because is arms were paralyzed by the jellyfish he was stung by just before he jumped out of the ocean, where he single-handedly mauled a pod of killer whales while being pesterred by 3 great white sharks.... Only after that would he die out of pure disbelief of what he had just done.
What I'm trying to say is... I'm incredibly suprised that the great Steve Irwin died the way he did.
Steve Irwin -- He will be dearly missed. :worthy:

interested to see what happened
Friend John Stainton said he had viewed footage of his friend's last moments and the images were "shocking".
...
"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone.
...
Irwin was killed almost instantly when the stingray stabbed him in the heart with its poisonous 20cm barb as he snorkelled off Port Douglas.
He was pulled from the water by a cameraman and a crewman, put on an inflatable tender and taken to a support boat about 500m away.
Crewmembers said he was barely conscious in the minutes after the sting, but died as his production team rushed him to his vessel, Croc One, and to a nearby island for emergency treatment.
A charter dive boat crew desperately tried to revive him on the beach, but were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards by Queensland Rescue Service officers, who had flown to the area by helicopter.
Irwin's body was last night flown to Cairns where a post-mortem confirmed the cause of death.
...
Mr Cropp said the stingray was spooked and went into defensive mood.
"It probably felt threatened because Steve was alongside and there was the cameraman ahead, and it felt there was danger and it baulked.
"Steve unfortunately was in a bad position and copped it.
"Steve was so close he could not get away, so if you can imagine it - being right beside the ray and it swinging its spine upwards from underneath Steve - and it hit him.
