So how many PS3's are expected to ship to NA?

I think many are jumping ship maybe a little to fast but this should not affect in thery NA supply, in the longer run increase it.
Very curious hearing the "trio" on TGS about this mess.

I mean, make no mistake, I'M GONNA GET MINE.
But sheit, 500,000? What a joke.

There won't be a delay here because that would be it. Just :emo: quit life, sony you just fucked it all up for everyone, if they delay it in North America and miss Christmas.

The best thing Sony could do to salvage this situation is just to delay the launch all together, utilize the 65nm technology, turn on the eighth SPE, boost the clock rates of all the components, and then release the console after they can produce SEVERAL MILLION for launch.
The above in my opinion would be very good news. A delay is NOT a bad thing. It can be a GOOD thing.
A very weak launch with more than half the world getting nothing for months and the US and Japan getting a few crumbs is BAD indeed.
yoshaw
09-06-2006, 03:05 PM
Actually its only 400K for North America. Divide that with Canada and you get a pretty upsetting figure.
Japan gets only 100K.

09-06-2006, 03:10 PM
MILR, be quiet, they're not gonna delay the launch to increase the specs at the last minute. They're quite obviously having a hard enough time just meeting their projected numbers with the currently existing technology!
DELAYS ARE NOT INHERENTLY GOOD. If everyone thought that way nothing would EVER come out. At some point you have to draw the line, release your product. THIS IS A BUSINESS THAT NEEDS REVENUE, and APPARENTLY, someone at Sony has completely forgotten that, sat down and asked the question, how can I possibly fuck up this situation any further? And they thought long and hard about that shit too man. This is a bad thing. Make no mistake. Every day that goes by and their console isn't on the market is another day 360 and Wii get more foothold in the hearts and minds of consumers, which for sony is BAD. For gamers, whatever but there's no denying Sony has been shooting itself in the foot since May.

400k is crap? PS2 had 500k at launch without production problems, and the 360 shipped only 900k by years end 2005.
People really need to chill out; so you won't get your PS3 on November 17th, you'll get it by years end. Kutaragi has stated that this is a delay of around a month, and they will still ship 6 million units by March 2007. The only problem lies in this Blu-Ray laser component, which means they still have all the other components ready, and there will be large shipments after November 17th.
As long as they get the 400k out on November 17th, and then they ship huge amounts by March '07, everything will be fine. If they don't fix this problem fast, and they don't get those 6 million out there, there's going to be problems.
And I guess we can hope for good news, like they fix the problem quickly, and they can revise the shipments. We'll see at TGS.

If I remember correctly, PS2 wasn't much cheaper than PS3 when it launched, and 980K units were sold in Japan the first weekend. 100K for Japan now sounds like a joke.

100K for Japan? They are REALLY counting on Japan being loyalists. Wii is gonna kill them for that.
400K in America is laughable against the 360 which will have Gears of War.
0K in Europe/ Africa/ Asia/ Australia until March... by then 360 will have Mass Effet and other great titles staring them in the face, Wii will have Mario Galaxy, and the PS3 will be asking for $700-$1000 with only a few good titles (sorry, but Heavenly Sword doesn't stack up to Mario Galaxy and Mass Effect/ Gears of War).
I just can't see any good side to this.

You haven't played it, so you can't claim it. For all you know the other 2 titles are crap. Not to mention there will be other supposedly AAA titles such as Lair available then too...

the ps2 didn't have a worldwide launch thuogh, VG.Neither does PS3 now, but... well, you know.
By the way, PS2 was launched in Europe just a month after NA, even though both got it several months after Japan did.
Anyway, PS3 is a way more complex machine than PS2 was, so I don't really blame them for not being able to manufacture more than 500K at launch. I'm not surprised by the news.

Guys, this happens with EVERY console launch, why should this one be any different? There's always problems, ALWAYS. The 360 shipped 900k units TOTAL by the end of the year '05 and production was shut down for 6 MONTHS. Sony is having trouble achieving yields on Blu-Ray diodes, it will be worked out, production just didn't ramp up in the way they were expecting. Everything else is ready, we're just waiting on these lasers, and they will come.
Problems in manufacturing happen all the time, unfortunately the vast majority of consumers have no clue how these things work. Don't get so worked up, this is not the end of the world. The PS3 will launch, we will see many more units ship between November and the end of December, and if you really want a PS3, I'm sure you'll be able to get one at launch or a few weeks after.
Things will work out. As long as systems are out on the shelves, people will buy them. Not only that, Sony has such a killer lineup this fall with PS2, they really have nothing to worry about.

Now that the dust is starting to settle we're starting to have some balanced and less furious discussion...the moral of the story is, don't take any projected launch unit numbers or dates as legit until weeks before the launch date.
Yes, Goki. PS3 won't release in the PAL territories until March.

Not exactly true. Sony has a history of it though and MS bungled the X360 launch. Aside from those, launches typically don't have their anticipated stocks cut in half.

One or two games ain't going to make a difference. The important thing is all the games that PS3 will have that won't be on the 360. And that's a lot. A whole lot.
