Blue-violet laser semiconductors installed in other Sony products were produced in a single reactor while for PS3 they had to use multiple reactors at the same time to process millions for the shipment target. As for buying laser semiconductors from other companies, it was not possible since others still can't handle mass production of these chips. The mass production of PS3 was delayed from early Septmeber to late September.
The US market is prioritized as Thanksgiving is in November. From late September, mass-produced PS3 will be shipped by boats to the US and the last batches will be by air. Since PS3 will be manufactured in Japan and China they can secure the assignment for Japan later than for the US.
As for Europe, PS3 shipped by boats in late January will reach there in early March. However, for the launch day, 1 million PS3 are secured for EU. They plan to ship 1.5 million PS3 to EU in March.
The initial target, 6 million PS3 till March 2007, is unchanged. Their internal target was 7.5 million and they plan to increase the output per month to 1.2 million.
Other parts are apparently in good yield. Cell has almost too good yield and they have 3 million of them. RSX, the 90nm southbridge chip, the RF controller chip for Blu-ray called "Savanna" are in good yield too.Just thought I'd let you know. I'll believe it when I see it though.

Hopefully Sony isn't just spouting targets again. I give them credit for keeping the bar high, but it sure does make people miserable when they don't hit their own high targets.

Well, I certainly think it's possible as stated in my other posts on the subject.
I am sure that, when March arrives, Sony's numbers will show a launch much better handled than Microsoft's, even though Europe is delayed.

Well previously, they only expected to ship 2 million from Jan - Mar 31 but now they expect to ship 4 million?
How does that work?

Outsource bluray production or shift certain factories to bluray diode. They said that other parts are having good yields so they can shift the product line to bluray, then shift back when enough supply is created.

The straight google translation is hilarious.
"The sony royal purple semiconductor laser"
Yeah, that's blu-ray. lol

This part was interesting.
For graphic processing LSI “RSX” and the southern bridge IC which is produced with 90nm process, ...
This indicates that the south bridge is indeed separate from the the RSX. I though Cpi indicated they were integrated in some thread at B3D. Or is the google translation messing up that text?

They expected to ship 2 million at launch world wide, and 6 million by March 07. Now, since production is starting at the end of September instead of the beginning, they are still going to ship 6 million by March, but the allocations will be moved differently. Most likely, the US and Japan will get constant shipments between November and January, and Sony will also stockpile 1.5 million units for shipment to Europe at launch.
Again, the only real kink in this is the Europe delay. Sony could ship 400,000 to the US at launch, and ship another 400,000 the week later.
The internet is fantastic because we can find out about so many things we otherwise wouldn't be privy too, but the internet is also terrible because we find out all this infromation, but we don't have access to the real meat and so we're left halfway between knowing and not knowing.

Siraris, they already said between 2.0-2.4 million will have been shipped at the end of 2006. This mean they'll be pushing out 4 million between Jan 01 and March 31. If they initially only expected to get 2 million out in that time frame, how the hell are they going to double it?

Because that's how manufacturing works. They already have 3 million cell chips ready right now, which means that it should be quite easy to aquire 3 million more in the next 7 months, as well as the other components necessary. I'm guessing they have something in line to get the diode production up to snuff, which is the only problem area right now.

My point is they only expected to be able to get 2 million diodes between jan 01 and march 31 but now expect to have double that in light of a shortage?

Everyone should take it with a grain of salt for now as they've missed their initial stated targets. But it isn't out of the realm of possibility that they had reason to anticipate 4 million by the end of December, so it could be a case of yields ramping up later than expected (and obviously the Euro allocation coming later as a result). Or they were hoping to wait out until yields improved before manufacturing until the last second, and finally conceding they're going to have to take the early bath on this one. There's a lot of variables involved.

Good news for Europe if these plans come through.
At least they wont have to deal with shortages after their long delay.

^^^^ Only 1 million throughout all of Europe, I would still expect shortages at the beginning.
