Actually 200 and some thousand for a 300 - 400 dollar console with a limited library is rather good for the summer months.

In 2001 the PS2 only averaged about 190k in the summer months and the economy was better.

Give it a year and Im willing to bet the PS3 doesnt beat these numbers and if they do I doubt by much.

Although this is below the number MS set for 300 thous. a month. Dont really expect them to hit that number of 10 mill. by end of year.

Nah..it's just the games man...Gears will defintely boost 360 sales...Although the game is coming out so close to PS3's launch--so I dunno by how much. But yeah, my theory is, NO killer-app=NO Killer sells. PS2 has enough AAA games and variety that it will sell no matter what because some people are just buying a PS2 and playing GoW or GT3 or whatever. With more big games like FF13 and Guitar Hero2-don't expect PS2 sales to slow down either...

btw-DS is killing them and all there games are made by Nintendo themselves....just goes to show u how much they OWN the handheld market--Sony first attempt wasn't a bad one tho, especially since Nintendo is like the Playstation of handhelds...

Forgot a very important factor PRICE. I surely didn't-I won't even be hoping to get a PS3 untill probably around the same time Europe gets there's. But I tend to believe there's enough rich people for PS3 to be a hott product for the Holiday's. Especially if Resistance flexes it's muscles on the eye candy...

Wasnt referring to holiday sales here. But yeah I agree come the holiday only the dedicated are going to be getting a PS3 with the supply and fanbase.

Disastrous 360 sales.
It just can't get break out of the original XBOX sales envelope.
In that sense it really is just XBOX 2.

Sony's strategy is clear. PS2 is still a mass market juggernaut and PS3 will be initially targetted to the high-end consumer. XBOX 360 will be squeezed out at both ends.

Well, it's pretty easy for even folks of limited means to purchase a PS2 since it costs a third of what a 360 goes for, and the PS2 has countless times as many games available for it as the 360 presently offers.

What we see here, then, is people buying the less expensive platform in spite of it being obviously and grosely outperformed by the newer hardware. They're passing up more powerful hardware boasting superior graphics in favor of outdated hardware with outdated visuals. What's my point? No point, really. Just pointing out what's going on here.

Exactly.
And by the time PS2 stops selling like mad (I still don't see how it still sells that well!?!? Even animals must have started buying one now lol) PS3 will have a more affordable price and killer titles.

Hmm...Things are looking MUCH better than I thought for Sony. I wasn't even worried one bit about Sony's strategy but now it's starting to become something genius.
Hopefully by PS4, Sony would have corrected it's negative blance sheet and can REAAALY push PS4 technology-wise. Go mad and put every new shit in it lol.

It is the cycle. They used it with the PS1 and PS2. The PS1 outsold the PS2 in the PS2's first Christmas(I expect this to happen to the PS3) when the PS2 was in very limited supply and sold out and the PS1 had an affordable price with alot of games. When the PS1 wasn't the shit anymore, the PS2's price was already down, and the games kep on coming and it got better from their. I expect the same for the PS3.

The PS3 has a high price of $500-600 because of imflamation(sucks though) and all the high end shit you have in it(especially Blu-Ray). For a year or so, early adopters will buy the system as well as the high end consumers with HDTVs and be attracted to the games and such. But the majority will still be buying the PS2. The games and features of the PS3 will still make it sell enough. By the time the PS2 is long and forgotten, their would already be plenty of AAA titles, the bugs would have been fixed, and more mature games would be showing.

Then people with PS2s would upgrade to the PS3. So this would lead to increase in sales at faster rates each year. Just a theory though, not a fact.

Um no. Someone on GAF posted August 2001 #'s and PS2 sold well over 300k, infact that was about the average rate of PS2 sales its entire first year. Price has nothing to do with it, its about the games.

More information is required, is this US sales Uk, Japanese or Global?

If that's sales in one territory I don't see what the big deal is. 200k is pretty decent considering.

Games what games? PS2 launch and first gen titles.
The PS2 was sold on a promise that in the end they would deliver. I don't really know what MS strat is if they are selling a promise or selling in the now. (id say the latter)

In Q1 2001 they sold over a million so about 330 thous a month

In Q2 they sold 580 thous. so about 190 thous. a month.

Maybe I have my quarters mixed and Q2 doesnt represent summer months or perhaps they hadnt launched Europe yet by this time. Im not aware of any individual month readings here.

Applefiend, you forgot to mention Timesplitters as well. That's where it all began. ;)

I'm sure that there was more games that were actually good in the space of a whole year.
