just for fun i was trying to get a standard PC HDD drive to work in my network enabled PS2 (first gen? SCH-30001 i think?) it was just an out dated 20 gig but the plugs all lined up so i figured i would take a shot. worst case o would blow the whole thing up.
well anyways nothing happend the PS2 dint see it could not hear it fire up or anything.
but than i started to think... what dose it weigh?
took it to my TM. Doctors Helper brand scale and she tips in at 6.6lbs
Hummm... this PS2 has everything the PS3 has as far as hardware big clunky first gen heatsinks(lol they look like lawnmower cylinderheads) power supply disc drive and a physicly much larger HDD big CPU(s?) GS...
oh and 5+ years of dust. so why is it that the PS3 is almost twice this
what exactly is in this beast?:3eye:
can't wait to take mine apart

Probably a real beast...open it up then out pops a few ugly beast..

I guessing some ginormous heat-sinks, plus would an early BD drive be bigger then a DVD drive?

Certainly, the power supply is bigger -- no matter how low-power Cell is, it's certainly more power-consuming by itself than the whole of PS2 (which is more a testament to PS2's low power than a reflection against Cell). Higher frequency components and low voltage swing busses (i.e. XDR/FlexIO) also means noise sensitivity, which means lots and lots of capacitors... and then some more.
Also the PS2 heatsinks were all-aluminium, I think. Surely, the PS3's heatsinks are going to be all-copper with heatpipes carrying god-knows-what fluid inside them. That alone makes the heatsinks about double the weight of their predecessors, all else equal.

when I first held the PS2, I thought it was heavy, alas, when you open it, it doesn't hold much in there....just some parts are heavier than others.

Completely spaced the power supply.....Look at the 360's.

I thought there were no fluids in the PS3, or are heatpipes by default fluidbased?

well, cpiasminc pretty much nailed it.

By default, they are some kind of substance that gives itself easily to phase changes (or just lots of conductivity, whichever you prefer). If you're referring to the interview where whoever it was talked about water-cooling not being feasible, that's a different problem -- specifically that of liquid cooling as a constant flow pumped system as opposed to a completely sealed self-sustaining cycle like a heatpipe, which is pretty much the standard these days. The former of which is definitely not feasible. Hence why the water-cooled Dreamcast never made it to the states.

I remember hearing in the interview with the guy at GC that took it out of the case that it weighed 10 lbs. Which is more than the original X-box.
And heat pipes work like this.

To the laymen the PS3 contains 5 Kg of awesomeness. Plain and simple.
And that's all you need to know! ;-]

no no no... Skilled bastard... when im done with the autopsy it will still run:beer:
i was a VW mastertech as well a a marine enginetech and im working on my A&P (airframe and powerplant) disasembling and reconstructing complex and sencitive assemblys is secondnature to me:angelgrin .
trust me if i was not confedent that i was not going to harm it i wouln't dare take it apart
You should video it and stick it on YouTube Jax. ;)

BTW did anyone read that heat pipe article?...
HOLYSH^% thats why we pay the money for our machine it truly is next gen!
a cooling system normaly reserved for the spaceprogram:crazy:

perhaps the ps3 is like the dr who tardis and contains more inside than out hence the 4D theory. LOL

Thats where It started. My HS on my computer's processor uses heatpipes.
I think it might just be an older article, but it still does a good job of describing how heatpipes work.
