PS3Land's earlier report of the PlayStation 3 not shipping with an HDMI cable sparked debate and gave rise to rumors stating that the console may only be able to play 1080p games and movies through an HDMI cable. Now, a Sony spokesperson has put those rumors to rest.
According to an article on kikizo.com, Jonathan Fargher of SCEE has confirmed to the gaming site that both consoles will be able to play 1080p games and movies, with the lower-end PlayStation 3 achieving this through component cables.
Rumors of the lower-end PlayStation 3 not being able to display true 1080p have been surfacing regularly, ever since Sony announced that only the higher-end unit will include an HDMI port, and movie companies announced the possibility of an anti-piracy measure called ICT which required HDMI in order to display 1080p. The article states that the PlayStation 3 will not be using ICT.
However, it may be a while before gamers see 1080p games. The article reports that the only game which features 1080p is a tech demo- Gran Turismo HD by Polyphony Digital, which may or may not end up being a fully-fledged game. No company confirming a 1080p game comes as no surprise as it takes time for developers to fully take advantage of what a console offers.
Sony has been touting the benefits of HDMI and calling 1080p “true HD” since the announcement of the PlayStation 3 last year, and hopes that the higher resolution will be one of the features which will attract gamers. The PlayStation 3 launches November 11th in Japan and on the 17th in North America.
