i hope this will put an end to all the arguements about no 1080p

PS3Land's earlier report of the PlayStation 3 not shipping with an HDMI cable sparked debate and gave rise to rumors stating that the console may only be able to play 1080p games and movies through an HDMI cable. Now, a Sony spokesperson has put those rumors to rest.

According to an article on kikizo.com, Jonathan Fargher of SCEE has confirmed to the gaming site that both consoles will be able to play 1080p games and movies, with the lower-end PlayStation 3 achieving this through component cables.

Rumors of the lower-end PlayStation 3 not being able to display true 1080p have been surfacing regularly, ever since Sony announced that only the higher-end unit will include an HDMI port, and movie companies announced the possibility of an anti-piracy measure called ICT which required HDMI in order to display 1080p. The article states that the PlayStation 3 will not be using ICT.

However, it may be a while before gamers see 1080p games. The article reports that the only game which features 1080p is a tech demo- Gran Turismo HD by Polyphony Digital, which may or may not end up being a fully-fledged game. No company confirming a 1080p game comes as no surprise as it takes time for developers to fully take advantage of what a console offers.

Sony has been touting the benefits of HDMI and calling 1080p “true HD” since the announcement of the PlayStation 3 last year, and hopes that the higher resolution will be one of the features which will attract gamers. The PlayStation 3 launches November 11th in Japan and on the 17th in North America.

So HDMI is pointless then?

^no, HDMI allows for not only interferance free truly all digital deep color (over 4 billion colors), but also 8 channel uncompressed 192 khz PCM audio. Component can consider itself pwned compared to that.

On top of that, component will limit the framerate to 30 FPS because it can't carry enough bandwidth to support 1080p60

Atleast the gamers will still be able to get their 1080p no matter what version they end up with.

I'm not aware of any televisions offering 1080P over an analog signal...
I'm not saying it's impossible, but I have not seen any HD sets that are doing 1080P over component.

That does bring up another point. Can it be done at this time with component?

Name a model...
Because most of the models that support 1080P specifically state it has to be done over a digital signal (i.e DVI or HDMI)

I hope that I'm wrong, because this could be great news for 1080P gaming!

1080p can be done over Component yes, but not alot of TVs support it if any. I think they said that to avoid mass confusion ''so I can't do 1080p with the $500 PS3.'' I think they want to push the sales of the $500 PS3 too and not lose people who want to buy the $500 PS3, but does not want to buy one because of the Component connections.

You'll still need to buy a component cable and a TV capable of running 1080p resolution.

Beenie, it's called being future proof. Not many TVs at all these days support 1080p, but they will. In the future, Sony is saying it's $500 PS3 buyers won't be out of luck for 1080p. And you can make a component cable out of 3 standard RCA cables.

Over the 10+ years of PS3 life I am sure it will be possible somewhere down the line.

 one would hope so.

At anyrate now all you need are the 1080p games.

Edit: also like Viano said you have a 1080p TV I'd say you would be able to afford the $1000Au PS3
