For some reason, IGN has released many old screenshots for a number of games. If you ask me, that sudden burst of screenshots means that we'll see a lot of new footage soon. I'd say that Sony is starting to show some more stuff and they finally released some old screenshots that had leaked previously before they release the latest ones.

I'm just guessing, but I think it's a given we'll see a lot of new stuff soon.

I can see this game being another Resistance in the eyes of the haters.

"The levels are all the same and have no variety...for the 10 mins I played it at my friends' house."

"My 360 could do this...just look at...um...er..."

And I'm confident the gameplay will certainly match up to the visuals judging by everyone's Rouge Squadron comments.

Check out some of the latest Lair details. Some pretty impressive stuff will be happening with this game.

To flap the dragon's wings (allowing you to fly faster), simply press the X button.
You can also extend the dragon's wings (slowing you down).
To get a quick boost of speed, you can press the circle button.
To lock-on to enemy dragons and turrets, hold down the L1 and L2 buttons until the lock-on reticule turns red.
The face buttons are used for various long-range attacks such as firebreathing and fireballs.
If you are close enough to a dragon which you are locked-on, you can start to attack them physically.
Controlling both the movement and physical attacks of the dragon is done via the motion-sensing.
By tilting in a certain direction, the dragon will fly in that corresponding direction.
You can perform dives, sideswipes, etc. with the motion-sensing.
If you pull back very quickly, your dragon does a 180 degree turn.
When doing physical attacks in the air, you can aggressively move the controller into the direction of the enemy dragon, and slam into it.
Occasionally your dragons will grapple, and you can press a random combination of the face buttons to claw, slash, and even bite the other dragon.
Also, you will occasionally have the chance to jump off of your dragon, and land on an enemy's, where you can kill either them or their dragon, or even both. This is also executed via the face buttons.
On the ground, motion-sensing is also used for steering.
If you slam down the controller, you can cause your dragon to slam his feet down, causing shockwaves on the ground, which damage enemies.
Also, if you move it back and forth, you can slash at enemies, and even eat some of them to regenerate your health.
Fire-breathing is controlled via a face button, and you can aim the fire with the motion-sensing."

"Lair supports native full HD 1080p graphics and 7.1 uncompressed audio [1] and also takes advantage of the following technologies:
Progressive Mesh is a technique rendered by the Cell microprocessor, which allows for an intensive amount of detail to be placed upon vast amount of objects, both up-close and far away.
High-Dynamic Range Lighting: All of the lights, shadows, reflections, and highlights in Lair are in HDR, and are rendered in real-time by the Cell and RSX, thus allowing the lighting scheme to completely change, just like the time of day does in-game, however, due to the advanced programming of the lighting system, it will be ever-changing, and rarely, if ever the same twice.
Real-time Dynamic Physics: Every second of gameplay, Lair renders hundreds of physics effects on everything from your dragon, down to the cloak on an enemy soldier. All enemies and allies have their own physics-driven animations, and have individually programmed ragdolls.
Real-time Fluid Dynamics: All of the water effects in Lair, such as waves, are run by real-time fluid dynamics on the Cell.
Parallax Shaders: Parallax shaders are used on almost every object in Lair, including fire and clouds.
Real-Time Renderings/Volumetric Effects: The fire in Lair is rendered in real-time, and has its own physics. All of the clouds, smoke, and fog effects are volumetric. Lava, rain, wind, fur, and more are also rendered in real-time."

GDC 07: Normal maps make Lair look good! (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/03/07/gdc-07-normal-maps-make-lair-look-good/)

Mattias Worch, technical art director for Factor 5's upcoming PS3-exclusive Lair, recently spoke to GDC attendees about creating textures and normal maps in a next-gen environment. The very technically-oriented lecture can be effectively summarized as such: "Lair looked really crappy until we used normal maps. Now it looks really good. You should all use normal maps."

Developers were told how to use Photoshop to accentuate and restore detail from textures. Also, artists need to have a clear vision before making a single texture: "Unless you know what you want to do with a normal map beforehand, it'll look wrong."

Afterwards, Worch showed off some incredible footage from Lair, running off a PS3. The graphics, while still glitchy, show a huge deal of promise. Of particular note were the incredibly lifelike water effects: when a ship explodes on water, you'll see realistic, physics-intensive, ripple effects that must be seen to be believed. The Factor 5 team clearly is doing something right: the textures were absolutely breathtaking, even up-close.

Worch promised the audience that his Powerpoint presentation would be made available for everyone to download on his personal website in the coming days. More excitingly, he also promised new videos of the game. Stay tuned.

Quite frankly, I think that it's overall a very nice pic. However, the background buildings and structures don't look quite as detailed and realistic as I would like. Also, I think the dragons could be a little more highly detailed. This game is NOT perfect.

However, it looks very nice.

My brother recently purchased a 1080P display and Ridge Racer looked amazing in 1080P you could see a significant difference in clarity and sharpness... I have the gut feeling that this game is going to be amazing on a high end setup with 7.1 sound and 1080P display.
(I think this may be the first TrueHD sound encoded media released.)

The 1080P 1.3 HDMI displays can't get here fast enough so I can upgrade! ;)

the most important aspect of any game is the single player game IMO. Multiplayer is rapidly becoming the lazy devs excuse for extended play and the single player is suffering as a result.

think about it this way: if you were a dev and you knew you could create great graphics but you lacked the ability to tell a good story, what would you do... CUT COSTS by putting out an half assed singleplayer and then bang on continuously about how great the multiplayer is and how fantastic the weapons are, in the hope that no-one notices its really only the shell your getting. MS will push this aspect in the future when storage restrictions really kick in.

prediction: 'i think that what people want from a game is a strong multiplayer option. most people don't want to sit through hours of CG, they just want to play and we at MS are going to give the player exactly what they want' you wait and see!

I know Heavenly Sword got pushed to Fall

Ummm... No it wasn't. The devs themselves said that they'd like Heavenly Sword to be the first "REALLY BIG" game of PS3. Even taking into consideration that they might think LAIR doesn't have what it takes to be one, they can't delay it forever as there are other potential releases coming before Fall (isn't DMC4 slated for a August release?) and even Phil Harrison has, IIRC, said how Ratchet & Uncharted are a couple of Sony's own weapons during Fall/Winter '07 and Heavenly Sword, LAIR, Warhawk & Singstar will be released before that.

And I somehow doubt it'd still take them like 6-7 months to release Heavenly Sword when it's been in the alpha stage for a while now (meaning they have no new features to add into the game and it's mostly about polishing everything before release). I'd say June-July timeframe is a likely release schedule for Heavenly Sword.

btw-August is considered Fall right?
I've always thought it's the end of Summer. Maybe if it's a really cold summer, then it might seem like Fall already, but yeah... I've always thought August as being the end of Summer.

Oh well, anyways I really doubt Heavenly Sword will be released between September-November. That's too late, not only considering the possibility that there might even be some surprise releases like Sucker Punch Studios' new game, Wipeout PS3, SOCOM PS3 etc., but also because the devs have said they are mostly polishing the game up (just like LAIR). So... yeah, June would be the "at earliest" date, imo, and July the one that seems most likely. Maybe the beginning of August too. I remember God of War being released in the Summer in Europe and it was a million seller, so that shouldn't stop them from releasing it in the Summer.

The European website from Playstation has been updated with three new release dates.

Lair and Heavenly Sword for May 2007, Singstar for June 2007.

Since Lair and Singstar are very likely to be true, this means we should trust the release date on HS...

I'd go by that word, simply because the official site's word, even though people there make mistakes too, is the best to go by. The only better word to go by would probably be an official press release about the specific release dates.

This is only one step down on the 'scale of officiality (word?)' from a press release I think lol.

If they are both for May, well.... that's great then lol.

With the huge investment needed per title, I cannot understand why a publisher would risk investing in a game without online play.

I am much more likely to rent single player games and purchase multiplayer. And I am sure people who sell their games second-hand games (boo!) are less likely to undermine the noble efforts of developers if they get more mileage from online play.

come to think about it, I don't recall a serious dragon game. there is the Panzar Dragoon or something from SEGA, but that's really a flight arcade game with a dragon instead of a plane. it just doesn't feel true to the dragons image. That is Panzer Dragoon, Zwei and Orta. Those were rail-gun games. Panzer Dragoon on the other hand was an RPG and wasn't arcadey at all.

This game and the Panzer Dragoon series are definitely different, though. LAIR is more action-oriented adventure which would likely exceed the original Panzer Dragoon in story but fall behind Saga in this area. Music is another area Saga was extremely strong in. I haven't heard LAIR's soundtrack yet so I won't compare but if it exceeds Saga - all I can say is wow.

I can't believe noone thought about it or done it sooner. dragons are one of the main themes for games, movies and books. along with pirates, ninjas/samurai, aliens are like the basic first steps in these things. True. Dragons have been untouched.

Thats for two reasons, first off these games are coming this year, so they must begin heavily marketing them now, thats why we're getting new screens, previews ect, ect... Second reason is Sony will likely use E3 to announce new games, and give us updated info on games we've heard announced, but have zero info on. Games like Killzone, 8 days, AFRIKA ect...

Lair: Beyond the Bridge

April 12, 2007 - Though we've already seen Lair a number of times and a decent stash of screens and videos have been released, details about the game beyond the recognizable "bridge level" have been kept rather mysterious. Sure, we've known about some of the game's mechanics -- the ability to physically assault other dragons, take to the ground to do battle and more -- but we've only seen these elements in small doses. This past week, however, Sony and Factor 5 gave us a couple of hours to dig our heels into Lair to get a fiery taste of what's to come in some of the game's opening levels.

One of the biggest lingering questions about Lair right now is its current status and expected release date, so we'll get that right out of the way. The version we saw was an alpha build, but it sounds like the game is pretty close to making it to beta. Factor 5 says that its development process makes for a quick progression from the "first alpha" to the final finished form, and that we can expect to see Lair on store shelves this July. Indeed, dragon battles on our PlayStation 3s are a mere three months away.

Not only will you be able to buy the game in July, but Factor 5 also confirmed that there will be a downloadable PlayStation Network demo at some point. It's unclear as to whether the demo will hit before the final release or after, but isn't supposed to be too far off either way.

In order to keep Lair's story at an extremely high level of production, its tale is told in a very linear fashion. However, individual missions will allow for branching goals, giving players the ability to play them as best they see fit. If you don't want to worry about the troops on the ground and would rather focus solely on the skies, you can go ahead and do that.

Speaking of the ground, many folks have assumed for some time that you're able to get off your dragon and partake in a little hand-to-hand combat. It turns out that this isn't true. While it may have made for more variety, Factor 5 says that this not only doesn't make sense from a character perspective (you're a dragon rider and not a soldier), but that the studio has put its development efforts towards gameplay variety in other areas. While you will find yourself on foot on some occasions (such as at the start of the game), these sections are simply there to enhance the experience a tad as your only goal is to get to your dragon and take to the air.

Although you won't actually be able to take out a mace and jump into unarmed battle, you will be able to land your dragon and cause havoc while on the ground. Once you've touched down, you're able to ram through soldiers and other beasts, unleash spreads of fire and more. Pressing the Triangle button orders your dragon to eat a hapless and unfortunate soldier, giving it back a bit of health. One of the major design elements that the studio wanted to get across as well is that the dragons aren't simply planes but creatures that are capable of waging physical combat and so forth, and to this end it looks like the studio has accomplished its goal.

As for those other elements of gameplay variety, Factor 5 promises that Lair will continuously introduce new systems to the player throughout the entirety of the adventure. Though you'll begin by simply flying around and killing dragons and peons as you'd expect, you'll eventually learn how to pick up and throw creatures (like horses), grab onto objects and shake them loose to cause structural damage to the environment, earn advanced physical attacks and more. The studio is keeping mum on exactly what other things we'll see, but we've been promised that there are "major" changes to what you'll be able to do in at least one point of the experience.

These other mechanics will not only help keep Lair feeling fresh, but will provide necessary ways to win battles with enemy dragons and the other miscellaneous creatures. Your dragon's fire attack will work against the weaker creatures, even the low-end dragons at the start, but the bigger dragons you'll see more often as you progress will be virtually immune to fire and you'll need to take part in some physical work to get rid of them.

You've no doubt seen footage of some of these tactics, like being able to jump to another dragon and dethrone its rider or slam into the beasts to take them down. By targeting another dragon and then ramming into it, you'll be placed into a bit of a one-on-one combat scenario where you can perform these moves. Jolting the controller to the side will cause your beast to slam into the other and hopefully knock it out of the sky, though you also have full control over your speed and such so you can perform advanced techniques, like quickly slowing down to toss in a couple blasts from behind.

These battles look reasonably cool, but the Sixaxis control recognition still needs a tad bit of work before release. If you move the controller up at all while trying to slam another dragon, which you will often do naturally if it's above you at all, it will cause you to perform a 180 spin. Useful in air combat, you likely won't mean to do this while trying to rough up another beast. Unfortunately, this happened to us more than a few times on accident, though hopefully the controls will be tightened up a little before release.

The physical attacks are important not only for taking out dragons and such, but boosting up your Carnage meter as well by netting you bigger multipliers. Measured in tons of damage, your Carnage meter will be part of what works towards earning your end-level medals in the game, which work very similarly to what Factor 5 did with medals in its previous Star Wars games. These medals will earn you new moves and other rewards, and tie directly into your online leaderboard ranking. Though there won't be any sort of multiplayer, you will be able to track how good you are via the game's online leaderboard. And speaking of rewards, Lair is one of the first games that will officially make use of trophies for PlayStation Home. Details behind what you will earn them for are scarce, but they will be included even if Home isn't scheduled to launch until after Lair is released.

Some environments in the game will indeed be destructible, though it's on a case-by-case and level-by-level basis. In missions where one of your goals is to outright attack and attempt to destroy a city, you'll find plenty of objects that break apart. What we saw didn't feature too much of this, with most of the destruction delegated to things like barrels, crates and other scattered objects, so we'll have to wait and see to find out just how much this is true for other sections of the game.

As for other whiz-bang technology goodness, Factor 5 confirms that the game will run at a rock-solid 30fps at both 720p and 1080p. The game indeed ran quite well when we played it, with nary a hitch in framerate to be found. This is rather impressive as levels can be as large as 32x32km in size, which is allowed by Factor 5's use of streaming mesh technology, an offshoot of level of detail models.

Lair also makes use of a fluid dynamics system for its impressive water technology, which looks fantastic even up close. This means that boats and objects are actually buoyant and float as they naturally would. Explosions cause waves in the water, which in turn rocks anything that the waves come across. The fluid dynamics do look to be surface based, meaning that water can't spill over the sides of boats and cause them to sink, but it is rather impressive nonetheless.

The use of this water technology is evident in the game's first level, "Day of Terror." Enemy ships approach your shores by sea, so you take to your dragon and are charged with taking them out. After destroying a good dozen ships or so, a fleet of dragons heads your way. This is where you'll get your first real taste of air combat and it's clearly the game's bread and butter.

One thing we noticed is that being as dragons are hard to distinguish from a distance, your dragons have red fire while your enemies' have blue. This makes it a bit easier to tell them apart, though you'll still have to play a bit of a guessing game from time to time. Flight control is reasonably easy, though as you're using the Sixaxis for input it isn't perfectly precise. This setup still works, though, as dragons aren't mechanical planes and do have a will of their own, making the controls feel a bit more believable.

Once you know who you want to take out, a lock-on mechanism will set them in your sights. Unleashing a single breath of fire will toss out a large ball of flame while quick, successive shots will be smaller and weaker until you give it time to recharge. All of this works fine in theory, though there are still a couple of kinks that need to be worked out, namely the fact that when a locked-on dragon passes by you the camera will follow it in an awkward manner and you'll have no idea where your own dragon is heading anymore. Once you flip back, you could very well be face-to-face with the side of a mountain.

In a later level, "Blood River," enemy armies and catapults are attempting to destroy a cargo vessel carrying goods to your city. Taking out the catapults is easy work, but a fleet of dragons are close behind, as are large mantas carrying thousands of troops. Once these soldiers hit the ground, the battle becomes hectic and you need to manage your attacks well. One of the goals here requires that you take out 2,000 soldiers before your city is destroyed, which seemed to be a rather slow-going task as they're spread out a bit. Heading to the ground and running them over works better than being in the air, but 2,000 men are not quickly trampled.

One of the cool things about the ground armies is that the game plays out these battles in something of an internal RTS engine. The two armies fight independently of your control and the outcome isn't set in stone, so sometimes unintended things will happen. This means that you won't always know whether or not your army will be able to hold off the enemy and you'll have to swoop down and take out a few soldiers of your own to sway the battle back in your favor.

As much as we had a chance to see of Lair, there's still plenty more that we don't know about it yet. As mentioned, the game is currently slated for release in July with a downloadable demo hitting the PlayStation Network sometime around the same time. For now, head to our media pages and have a look at plenty of new screenshots and HD videos.

In my opinion the new screen shots look very good, but not spectacular. In addition, the videos look very good, but not spectacular.

However, I think the game will be spectacular and here is why.

This game is gigantic. For example, each level is 32 miles long. I would like for the dragons and everything to be more detailed. But with such a gigantic game I don't know if we can expect much more detail. The PS3 only has so much RAM and I'm sure that they are using every single megabyte.

I think the scale of the game and the gameplay will add to the very good graphics to make a spectacular game.

My favorite vid is the third one when it is raining/lightening and they are talking to each other...the one with the giant rotating fortress. I got a really awesome original warhawk vibe from it.

*And in case no one else noticed, your dragon apparently has what looks to be like light coming out of his eyes. It's pretty apparent in the 3rd vid when your character is approaching and attacking the rotating fortress. I believe this to be an indicator of where your dragon is looking...his field of vision persay. You must have to be aware of it, which makes me think that the dragon has his own ai and is more like a character you are working with rather than just a controllable automaton. This would add a pretty cool gameplay element if indeed that's what that light beaming from your dragon's eyes is for.
