Speaking to analysts late last week, the firm added some flesh to the bones of its recent announcements. The split between premium (60GB) and core (20GB) units at U.S. retail stores should be roughly 80/20. Sony believes it can ramp monthly PS3 production to 1.2 million units by January due to anticipated improvements in Blu-Ray laser supplies.

The firm says a further 1.2 million units will be available in Japan following the initial launch-day arrival of 100K units. Analysts believe Sony will have managed a run-rate of 14 million units for 2007.

Why so many 60GB? That sucks-I wanted a $500 unit...

I think they should really promote the $500 version since games will work exactly the same way as in the $600 version and early adopters and fans wouldn't suffer as much when looking at the price tags, but I guess Sony really wants to promote the 60 GB version - which is the one I'm buying anyway.

At the beginning, it may not be a bad idea to sell more 60 GB units than 20 GB units. However, once hardcore gamers have all bought their consoles, they should produce more 20 GB units than 60 GB units, IMO.

Wasn't this the same way the PSP launched in Japan? Didn't they have more value packs than the Core one, and people complained???

This was said about PS3 Online:

Details of the PS3 online network were discussed in broad terms, with, as expected, plans for basic community features such as video, audio and text chat, gamer rankings, as well as limited content downloads such as casual games and game updates as well as non-games downloads such as full music and video, user-generated content, and Internet browsing. SCEA indicated that full downloads of console games will not be practical in the near term due to storage and bandwidth constraints.

Funny they didn't mention free matchmaking. I hope that's still going to be free.

Well not always I think that we see early adopters as more of the hardcore crowd as that is not always the case. There are a tremendous amount of grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles etc that flock out on opening night to pick up the latest gadget for little Billy. Although I believe most early adopters are of the hardcore consumers I dont think they are the majority by a lot.

I think Sony is promoting the higher priced sku for the same reason MS does, they simply make more money off of the package than the standard version.
