PS3 Controller Named SIXAXIS? (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3153593)
http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/3654/sixaxisgt3.th.jpg (http://img65.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sixaxisgt3.jpg)
Sony's PS3 controller can't be called the Dual Shock 3 if it doesn't rumble, so what's the company to do? Rename their controller.
A 1UP user passed along the suggestion that we check the patent records for the name 'Sixaxis' and see what turned up. Scanning the trademark's text it's clear that this could be any number of things (see image above).
However, the term "six axis" has appeared frequently in Sony PR, including multiple times in the May 8, 2006 announcement of the controller's motion sensing functionality:
"The controller for PS3 employs breakthrough technology of high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis sensing system that does not require any devices other than the controller itself for seamless interactive operation, thus eliminating additional settings to TVs. With this technology, ways to enjoy PS3 will be further enhanced by accessing PS3 through the network, while retaining the six-axis sensing capability."
So is this palindrome Sony's name for the PS3 controller? Representatives from Sony Computer Entertainment America told 1UP, "We haven't yet announced the name of the controller." But next week at TGS if you see Ken Kutaragi holding up a PS3 controller with a power point slide that reads "SIXAXIS" behind him, don't be surprised.

I don't love it either. Anyway, even if the patent is true, it could be just something like that patent which featured a PS3 logo with PS2's font. They didn't use it in the end, but they had to patent it anyway.

Im thinking it'll be more like a tag they stick to games which make use of the controllers tilt-sensitivity
like, just shove it on the bottom of the pack at the back like they did with analog compatible...

SixaxiS
Palindrome with lot of x's, which are always received kinda well in "cool names", y'know there's some products out there :)
The name might actually work even.
They probally will change it when they recieve feedback like with the banana controllerI still feel "the boomerang" was a red herring.

its trademarked by SCEJ, so maybe SCEJ will be using it and not the other divisions.

It'll be call DualShock 3, as at TGS, Sony will reveal the rumble feature! In other word, Sony is ready to "Rumble" at TGS. "Let's get ready to RUMBLE!"

Who cares about the controller name.... honestly.
They could call it "Turds McTroller" and it wouldnt change how it performs and feels, which is all that should matter.

How many of you have said "hey can you hand me the Dual Shock 2?"
Call it what you want... I'll call it a controller or in intense madden bouts "the stick"

TGS had better bring rumble to the controller, I kept my mouth shut when the real PS3 controller was unvealed in 05 even though at the time I thought it looked weird. Then I stayed quite when they made the switch back to the PSone controller without rumble, but now that it has been broght up agian and after a year plus of deciding i'm ready.
The new PS3 controller absolutly pisses me off. The Controller that Sony showed at E305 is the controller that should be coming out November 17, 2006 along side the PS3. It looked like it belonged with the system to our knowledge it had rumble, a more comfterable design, and a chance to be the best controller of this generation.
Instead we have the broken PS1 contoller with no rumble and a cheesey, 2bit, PiecofshiT tilt sensing technology. I hope all of the bannana callin, batarng brawlin, jackasses that changed Sony's mind are happy. cause you just put PS3 sales of multiplatform titles down the drain by over 50%. That means lower first party budget crappyer games and a hole lot of shit from the 60 percent of wii +360 gaming market.
Note: I hate Xbox 360, and no matter how cool a wii game sounds the graphics are un acceptable. I will have a PS3 november 17, 2006 and have PS3LikeNoOther ready to go on madden, resisitance, warhawk, and Motorstorm, but I won't have a PS3 controller or rumble and that is a shame.

Man, screw the rumble. Sit on a subwoofer or something. Now in a steeringwheel, that`s where i want feedback.

I have no problem with the sixaxis name. Lets face it Dual Shock wasn't a stretch of the imagination either.
And I strongly feel the PS3's motion controller is better for gaming then the dual shock was.
If I have to choose I would choose the sixaxis controller ver dualshock. Although having both would be the ultimate way to go.
IMO
Dual Shock = feedback
Sixaxis = extension of gameplay.
Even though in some situations dual shock can be an extension of gameplay, it is extremly limited. AND since we all crave some innovation in gameplay, the sixaxis can offer that, while dual shock would just be more of the same old, with little new or different to offer.
I do admit it would be nice ot incorporate dual shock into the sixaxis for the full monty of controller functions, but given that Sony has a nasty court battle with Immersion I just do not see that as a possibility, and I think we all know Sony is not going to use Immersion technologies at this point.

I wouldn't worry too much about rumble guy...And the tilt feature is far from cheesy-it's actually a better function to the controller than rumble-it's just that rumble supposed to be in there with it..lol
But I'm sure we'll get used to it-and if not, and we complain enough Sony will introduce something down the line...
For those complaining about the lack of rumble, have you ever played a game on PC with KB&M? Games can be just as immersive without rumble and give as much feedback (Call of Duty 2 springs to mind). IMO some kind of impact blur and screen shaking would do a better job of conveying impact to me than a little vibration in my hands because the primary input senses in games are vision and sound.

it may not just be the lawsuit stopping sony from having rumble it might have more to do with the battery life of the rechargeable controller as people won`t want to have keep recharging the thing after only a few hours play.
6XS don`t sound so bad to me anyway.

I'm sorry I don't get why rumble is important. I was playing Okami yesterday and my controller started rumbling like crazy at one point and all I could think was:
"God this is annoying"
"My wrists are starting to hurt"
"What in the world is this trying to signify?"

I fail to see whats so hot about rumble either. Its so freakin cheesy in most games to the point of being down right irratible. I turn the crap off.
Now, force feedback like in the Logitech steering wheel, thats another matter. It rocks.

i wouldn't say they changed the name because theres no rumble - i'd say the name would have changed anyway. you market your product on it's newest, most eyecatching feature - you don't see ferrari using the catchline "now with disc brakes!" or "seatbelts included!" to sell their cars. i therefore wouldn't take the name as proof that there will never be a rumble feature in the controller, either...
