At a special press conference in Tokyo today, Sega let attendees play Virtua Fighter 5 on the PS3 for the very first time. I'll sum it up in two words: arcade perfect. While no VF freak like Milky or Shane, I wouldn't be able to comment on every intricacy (missing or present) in the version I played, but for all intents and purposes, this looks and plays just like the arcade game.
The game is looking surprisingly polished -- all the characters and stages seemed to be present and everything looks spectacular. The only complaint at this point was the loading time -- it was about 10 seconds from character select screen to the beginning of the match. It didn't feel too long, but here's hoping this will be improved as the game gets optimized. As for how much longer Sega plans to spend on polishing the game, that remains to be seen -- the company hasn't committed to a proper release date. However, based on our digging, it's sounding like a January or February release to be likely.
There are screenshots available, including a PS3 attached to a arcade joystick pad

Wow, awesome. And the only complaint about it is the not-so-long loading time which I'm sure isn't taking advantage of the HDD just yet.

Yay. Just one thing. What's (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v604/Sephiroth_VII/PS3/media2.jpg) this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v604/Sephiroth_VII/PS3/media.jpg)? Could it be the two mysterious LED's (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v604/Sephiroth_VII/PS3/SCEE_PS3_detail_SONY__.png) that were on the Leipzig version?

I don't care what they're there for, it looks awesome when those things glow.

Unlike the PS2, these LED's seem to be sitting behind a fogged/milky plastic. All the better because PS2's LED's stabbed in the eyes if looked straight into.

Thankfully hands are usually in the way of PSPs LEDs.

The PSP LED's are actually extremely small, and doesn't really give off any light at all, as you can see if you start it with the faceplate off. A chunk of plastic inside the faceplate magnifies the light, like a telescope or magnifying glass, and sends it into our eyes..

I guess that they're the usual green/power, red/standby & blue/tray.
I honestly preferred when they were under the buttons, but meh. It's better than burning my finger on the off-button when I've been playing all night.

How mysterious could they really be? They're probably a light for power and the HDD activity light. It's not like they signify anything we don't know about.
My biggest question about VF5 is what res is it running in? It's a fighting game and definitely doesn't need the processing power of a game like Resistance. Wouldn't it make sense for it to run in 1080p? (If it isn't already?)

Well, according to Ruliweb, Virtua Tennis is running at 1080p, so it's not out of the realm that VF5 is.

I think they should be able to get them running practically the same with some effort. The Limburgh (that is what it is called, and what they are using, right?) has a 7800 right so that should be the same or maybe slight better on the PS3, the PS3 has the CELL and, the limburgh has 1 GB RAM, so they should be pretty much on the level except the RAM, but the PS3 has the advantage of CELL.

And I really don't think there's a fighting game out there that needs 1 GB of RAM just yet. VF5 doesn't look like it really needs that much memory to me anyway.

I somewhat agree with you on the physics side of things. But just to update you real quick, neither was Tekken Tag when it launched on the PS2. Basically, it was just a prettier version. Not until later did it evolve into something else completely.

Geez. VF5 is fine the way it is.
I'm loving those arcade sticks attached to PS3 screens.

Must have online.
But looks to be a solid single player fighting game, I wish they would do something with the engine rather than just tweaking the same one to death.

People only pay attention to visuals, especially at this part of launch.
They can spend resources on physics revamping later, when they've already had a successful title on ps3.

It's amazing how poorly screenshots represent games (Note: Even though a game has proper Anti-Aliasing, you will still see Aliasing in still shots. NEVER forget to remind the haters of this when they try and hate on your game.):

Won't happen, buddy. The Virtua Fighter creator has loathed the idea of a VF Online. In fact, in one of the interviews he said that if VF were to go online, it'd ruin the experience of the game. I'll find the link when I feel like it.

Yeah I don't think VF will ever go online-unless there's some kind of direct connect system between consoles where lag is no longer an issue. THe Arcades in Japan is still the heart and soul of VF--no online anytime soon I think. There's simply zero room for lag in this game...Although since community and reputation are so important to VF-it's kinda Ironic that it's not online somehow..

Virtua Stick High Grade
>.< Ow my eyes. ;)
never did get into playing with joysticks after the Atari. I rather use a pad.
that, and when playing Tekken, I think I have the most unusual grab. funny thing is, I only use that grab with Tekken.
here how I hold the pad:
left hand; normal. thumb for directions indext/middle fingures for shoulder buttons.
right hand: indext/middle fingure for face buttons- and nothing else. so I look like I am pointing twords the pad with two fingures.
any one else holds a pad funny for any game?

I TRIED to do spods with a pad in VF4, it doesn't work all that well, an arcade stick is the only way to play as Akira. I suppose you can get away with other characters in VF with a pad though.

So does the PlayStation 3 still have the "touch sensitive" power/eject buttons?
Also, those IGN shots are bleh looking.

No, nor did it ever have any. It seems they have to be pressed. It's like I said before awhile back, this is a console that will be put in millions of homes. To spend the extra money to go that high on something that'll most likely be damaged fairly easy by careless adopter would be a bit pointless. What you saw was a prototype with nothing in place. That was it. Just like any prototype, final decisions are made closer to the end.

Offensive Move is going to change the game COMPLETLY awsome, it sounds like a major plus to me, I've always wanted to pull of more grabs from behind, it was more luck than skill to do so before.
I really can't wait to get my hands on this.
