Same voice actor. Hopefully he toughens his voice up a bit. I trust they know what they're doing. Everything people hate Raiden for is every reason he was there, so I don't think it's so much that Raiden sucks as it is everyone missed the point.

I'm very happy to hear the entire crew got back for this last adventure, I can't imagine MGS without them!

Exactly. I am a huge anime fan (duh *points to avatar*) and I prefer japanese dubs 100% in anime. For Metal Gear though the English va is nothing short of amazing. Best english dub...period.
MGS and FF stand out as having the best voice acting in any medium.

Look like Kotaku live blogged it, nothing new but their will be an interview later.
What's probably the main event of the weekend is about to get started. Kojima is the biggest name attending the GO3 conference, and he's also tipped to be the only one actually showing something off: a shiny new MGS4 trailer. Maybe he will, maybe he won't. Fingers crossed, eh?
3:06pm - We're running 35 minutes late. Lot's of late-minute tinkering with the AV. He's a stickler for perfection. But we're underway, and I think he brought his own translator. Best translator of the weekend? Yes!
3:08pm - Looking at the evolution of video games, and how Metal Gear shaped that. In the 80's, everything was about shooting. So Metal Gear was born. I feel another life story coming on, so settle in for the long haul.
3:16pm - Lots of footage of Metal Gear. "It's very boring, isn't it?". Lots of laughter, lots of nodding heads. "What a big duct that is!", "it's a lot like new Metal Gear, isn't it?". Funny stuff, he's in fine form.
3:25pm - Time marches on. We're at Metal Gear Solid now, and he's demoing the intro. "His face is made of dots!". For a game that's nine years old, it's still looking pretty good. Kojima runs, he's discovered, he runs away and...we have first box-hiding gag. It goes as expected, laughs all round.
3:30pm - The timeline stuff continues, and we're at MGS2. Another demo, another intro. "Can I skip this dialogue" jokes are swimming through my mind. He's not too happy with some of the tanker sequence, thinks it looks glitchy, but it looks fine to me.
3:36pm - Talking about how they came up with the setting for MGS3. "Where should I hide my snake this time?". I am the only person who chortles, which is a little embarrassing. Snakes are in the jungle, so the game should be in the jungle. Now he's demoing MGS3, and apologising for not being able to eat Koala in the game.
3:43pm - Alright, time for MGS4. He's talking up the psychological warfare stuff, where you freak out the warring soldiers. He runs the trailer that ends with Snake holding a gun in his mouth. Not new. Sorry.
3:49pm - Shows a screen of the systems Metal Gear has appeared on (or at least developed primarily for). Sorry kids, no 360 there.
3:50pm - And we're done. No new trailer, no announcments. Let down? Yeahh, but probably shouldn't have been expecting too much. Anyways, got to run, our interview is right after the talk. I'll see if I can drag anything out of him there. Luke Plunkett

There are places you can get stuff, anything you want, printed on a shirt you know, just FYI, obviously more expensive than if that was actually a shirt coming mass produced though. I'd so buy that for like 10 or 15 bucks or something.
I usually go to one of those large malls. they usually have kiosks for printing anything on anything. just give them a pic using a USB flash memory and tell them where you want it and how big it is. :)

GO3: Kojima Talks Metal Gear History, Future
GO3: Kojima Talks Metal Gear History, Future Innovation, by design or by necessity, seems to be Hideo Kojima's motto. Beginning his address to the Australian GO3 conference in English, Kojima-san started out with the standard pleasantries, complimenting the Perth area, and mentioning he was "surprised there weren't kangaroos everywhere!"
The rest of the speech would be in Japanese (translated for the audience via radio transmitted headsets), and after the language transition, Kojima said that the topic of his speech today would be "game technology evolution." Beginning with a mention that "every game has rules" - such as when you play a game of cards, he went on to describe the way many layers have been placed on top of the basic rules in modern games, such as design, sound effects, story, voice acting, music, FMV and online code.
With so much content in a modern game, we must now "collaborate with the experts in each field" (such as a musician). Eventually, he says, games will be in full collaboration with other industries, leading to "one [coherent form of] digital entertainment".
Progress Through History
Kojima said he would show us this evolution using his games (primarily the Metal Gear series) as an example. In the 80s, non-abstract action games were primarily spaceship shooting games, such as Konami's Scramble. Metal Gear subverted this standard by not being about shooting - it was about "trying to form the tension of hide and seek".
It came about because 21 years ago, Kojima was asked to make a game on the MSX home computer, a "non mainstream" platform with specs below the Famicom (NES). It was very difficult to make an action game on such a low-spec machine, and Kojima demonstrated the limited sprite capabilities of the MSX with a quick comparison - he compared the arcade version of Gradius to the pitiful MSX port.
The MSX could only display four sprites horizontally at once, and to handle Gradius it has to 'fake' eight sprites by displaying enemy ships only once every other frame, which caused them to flash on and off - "can you see the flicker", he said.
The Concepts Behind Metal Gear
So to make a combat game he had to "change the idea". He had to come up with a concept that limited the number of sprites and bullets on screen at one time. He "thought of 'The Great Escape' [movie]" and that the concept of an escape could be done. But this wasn't good enough: Kojima felt that "games need heroes" and that "no-one wants to play a character that just escapes." So he thought "why not make my main character sneak in - a stealth game, and this all added up to Metal Gear... the birth of my stealth game."
The graphics couldn't scroll, so the design had to be based on single screens - Kojima showed us a scene from the original Metal Gear (stating with humility" "I'm a little embarrassed to show you this now"), and he demonstrated the design of each screen, such that four objects would never line up horizontally. The main gameplay was about avoiding being seen by a limited number of guards or surveillance cameras (he showed a scene where snake must sneak into an elevator, joking "I'm not sure why the guards are taking a break").
When Snake was discovered, the gameplay changed to become almost a puzzle game "like Pac-Man", where Snake must avoid the guards like they were Pac-Man's ghosts. A final innovation came with the addition of an in-game story, because "there weren't any stories at that time in action games", and he thought the hide and seek game needed a story to justify why you were sneaking.
The Evolution Of Metal Gear
When asked to create a sequel for the same platform, Kojima "had the same restrictions" so "had to bring in new ideas" to keep it fresh. He said he ditched the puzzle game aspect, and went for more realism - the concept behind Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake was "how you sneak in to an area." Enemies now had a 'field of vision' rather then only seeing what was straight ahead, and while the screen still didn't scroll, the player had widened vision via a radar.
Sound was now implemented as a gameplay feature, where you could get caught, but could also distract the guards with sound. While it was still a 2D game, height was implemented so you could crawl into a duct ("what a big duct it is" joked Kojima about the on-screen example) or hide under a desk to avoid detection. He explained that basically all of the systems in Metal Gear games today were present in Metal Gear 2, back in 1990.
In a brief aside about his text adventure games Snatcher and Policenauts (where Kojima explored his cinematic ambitions, now possible because of the storage capacity of the CD-ROM), we were back on to Metal Gear. The 3D consoles allowed another level of gameplay, and Kojima wanted to create a true "3D atmosphere - hide and seek in a 3D world".
Metal Gear Solid was named for its star, but also because for the first time the environment was 3D - it had volume, and was 'solid'. To create the feeling of being in this 3D world, a three-camera system was developed. First was the traditional overhead camera, same as the 2D games, and it was complemented by the first person view, where "the player shares Snake's view". The third camera, which Kojima considers "very innovative" was the "cinematic view", where the camera pulls down when you push against a wall, and allowed for some very dramatic gameplay set pieces.
To MGS2 And Beyond
Next, Kojima detailed what he tried to achieve with Metal Gear Solid 2. DVD-ROM and the 128-bit CPU of the PS2 allowed a lot more freedom and detail graphically ("this machine was a monster high-spec machine") - but he "didn't just want to make it high polygon, make it real", instead he wanted to emphasise immersion and atmosphere, particularly with environmental effects: "MGS2's concept was 'environment'."
He said that: "In MGS1 you were just in a little box, but in MGS2, I wanted to create a sense of smell, of atmosphere, and temperature, and this was a big challenge". It was more realistic, with more environmental interaction and first person shooting, but instead of using the CPU power to make the characters more detailed, Kojima used the power to "make it almost as if you could feel the air."
He then demonstrated several of the effects in Metal Gear Solid 2, from rain to heat to wind. The game also used motion capture of real actors for the first time, which while commonplace now, was rare at the time - and with the addition of a Hollywood produced soundtrack, the 'collaboration' element of games was in full swing.
Metal Gear Solid 3 was for the same platform ("there was no Playstation 3 yet!" he joked), and much like the MSX sequel, it forced Kojima to innovate rather then just upgrade. The concept of Metal Gear was always "where do you hide", so he thought of a jungle as a "new place for Snake to hide", thus the concept of MGS3 was "Infiltration in a natural environment."
Along with the visual change, survival aspects were introduced to match the setting - so food capture, camouflage, healing and "CQC" (close quarters combat) were added. But the now-aging PS2 had trouble keeping up with the rendering of so many trees, and Kojima made the decision to drop the framerate from 60fps to 30fps (although some new effects were added, such as glare).
While playing a demo video of MGS3, Kojima was once again critical of his work ("looks more like your backyard then a jungle"), and apologised to the Australian audience that you couldn't eat koalas in the game! He explained that even more collaboration was required for this title, with extensive motion capture used for both the cutscenes and in game animations.
On Metal Gear Solid 4's Status
Finally, Kojima-san gave us a brief run down on the concept behind the work-in-progress Metal Gear Solid 4. Snake had now run out of places to hide ("we can't make Snake go to space!"). Kojima felt his team had "exhausted the concept of the space, so why not create a situation, rather then a place where Snake had to sneak in" - and he thought of a battlezone.
And so Metal Gear Solid 4's concept is "play hide and seek in a certain situation". He explained the possibilities of this battlefield setting - it confuses the player both functionally and morally, as there are two armies in battle. Not everyone is necessarily the enemy to Snake, which creates a new tension. He then showed the audience the latest (but previously revealed) trailer of the game.
Kojima concluded with a reminder that in 1986, the hardware limitation of the MSX led to the creation of Metal Gear. With technology "evolving with the hardware", you have to "upgrade your ideas." As game tech evolves, game designers "must collaborate with other professionals", and this adds together to make art through games.
The Konami veteran believes that game design will continue to evolve, and will "never stop evolving" - he finished with the simple, but positive statement that: "Games will continue to be a collaborative art, and I believe in this concept."

GO3: Kojima on Metal Gear Solid 4
Apr 1, 2007
Few games have had as much hype and expectation surrounding them as the PS3's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. So it was no surprise that series creator Hideo Kojima drew the biggest crowd of any speaker at last weekend's GO3 Electronic Entertainment Expo held in Perth, Australia. And while Kojima didn't unveil any new trailers or gameplay specifics, he did speak at length about the main gameplay theme he's introducing into the famed stealth series--playing hide and seek within a certain situation.
It was Kojima's first time Down Under, and he started his speech to the 200-strong crowd (still barely filling two-thirds of the large hall at the Perth Convention Centre) in English. "It took me a while to come down to Australia, and I am surprised that I have not met a single kangaroo yet. Nor have I seen crazy motorcycles like those in Mad Max," he said. After the lighthearted introduction, Kojima returned to his native language of Japanese and spent the majority of the next hour outlining the history and concepts behind his most famous creation, the Metal Gear series.
Kojima started his tale all the way back in 1987 when he first released the 2D Metal Gear for the MSX system. He outlined the evolution of his original game concept--that of hide and seek within a given area or place--through the various versions of Metal Gear in the past 20 years, adding that he worked hard to introduce new elements into each game. For Metal Gear Solid 4, Kojima said he needed to think of an entirely new idea as the concept of place had run its course.
"I went back to the drawing board, back to scratch, and looked at what I did for Metal Gear 1 and 2, and for Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3," he said through a translator. "Now I can't make Snake go into space to do his stealth mission, and we've exhausted the concept of the place, so now I thought why not create a situation rather than a place? And then I thought of a battlezone or warzone as the situation where Snake has to sneak in. So MGS4's game concept is playing hide and seek within a certain situation."
Kojima said MGS4 would place Snake in war locations where there would be two opposing armies--a situation which the ageing stealth agent could use to his advantage.
"To make it very simple, in the past Metal Gears, Snake was going into enemy environments--so everyone apart from Snake was an enemy. This time it's a warzone, so you have country A or country B, so Snake could interfere with either of the countries. It does not necessarily mean that everyone is an enemy to Snake. This creates a new tension in playing this new hide and seek," he said.
Kojima also cryptically hinted that the increased processing grunt of the PS3 would be used not only for better graphics, but for the introduction of "psychological" elements.
"I would also like to challenge the PS3's CPU power for not only what you can see, but also psychological effects, or psychological battles, where it can affect your gameplay," he said.
Kojima closed his speech by saying the evolution of games hardware means developers will need to work closely with professionals in a diverse range of industries to continue making better games.
"As game hardware evolves and more technology appears, you will gradually start to collaborate with other industry professionals. Doctors, psychologists, many artists, plus maybe some scientists--we can perhaps collaborate with these people in the future," he said.
"Game design evolves with technology, and there is no end to technological evolution. Therefore game design will continuously evolve--it will not stop evolving. And at the same time, through the joint effort of many people, games will continue to be a collaborative art. And I believe in this concept."

I have confidence the final product will be on par or exceed the visuals.
I'm looking forward to the visuals, but I'm really excited to experience the new story line and to see what Kojima has in store for sixaxis...
I agree, in terms of graphical and visual prowess we can trust Kojima team.
And the scenario looks awesome, I can't wait to see Raiden in action wiping all those Gekkos. And Meryl too. She' s as sexy as ever.

I've got the feeling we could see up to 5 different locations/countries (maybe not including Outer Heaven). In the very first MGS4 promo poster from E3 2005, you can see military codes / logos for 5 different armies (and coordinates? I don't know how to read those mysterious numbers) of different sizes. Interestingly, it was mentioned that Outer Heaven controlled the world's 5 biggest PMCs in the E3 2006 trailer.

I haven't been in this thread in a while now...
But it just occured to me. I was thinking about how MGS4 also takes place in south africa - after seeing Blood Diamond, the question must be asked - will we fight the kids who are commandos? What will we be doing there?
Will it bring a new breed of enemies to the chaos of the saga? Will it breed a new arch enemy? Because rebels over there are tough bitches compared to what we're seeing in MGS4 trailers.
The last question I have: Will the children be injected of the FoxDie virus? Will they be mutated into clones of the big boss? There's so many questions regarding these other countries.

I highly doubt we will fight children. The idea is too harsh for many, even if it is reality. I certainly wouldn't want to be doing that in a game.
But the Blood Diamond parallel is good, because that was a great film. Emulating the tension in a game that the film offered would be stellar, although I would want it to be done without involving children.
I'm sure we will meet a fair share of greenhorn young adults to scare the crap out of.
But I also had the same thought. Snake is almost like fighting with time, and maybe that can include that he may have to fight against to control the up and coming generations.
But it doesn't have to be a time and getting older parallel like that either, we could end up fighting younger soldiers simply because that is what the reality is in MGS4, that mercenaries are being picked up from all over the world to fight.
The Danny Archer character (DiCaprio) was certainly an interesting character. A man bred for war since childhood, which is sadly far too often the case in many parts of Africa. I wouldn't be suprised if we meet lots of Danny Archers and have to fight them in MGS4. We've already met characters like Danny Archer anyways. Raiden and Grey Fox were both fighting from childhood, so the idea has been prevalent through the MGS series since the beginning.

Raiden was actually raised by Solidus as a child soldier in Liberia, so I wouldn't be surprised if we went back to some past locations (possibly as Raiden! :-p) to uncover things, and it could also deal with child soldiers -- but I don't think we'll be fighting them at all. While I was watching Blood Diamond I kept drawing these stupid and practically nonexistent parallels between Danny Archer & Raiden (and Naomi since she was from Rhodesia and was an orphan ), and Arnold Vosloo's character and Solidus :-p

The closest I have found is "at the moment dmc4 is a ps3 exclusive as said before " and the like. Kojima flat out denied that it will go multi platform. Not to mention that he asked for a bigger Bluray disc...Capcom didn't.

I think he is referring to some of the comments saying, "due to the power of the PS3 we can do X,Y & Z." There's definitely a difference with that statement and saying something is only possible on the PS3... It's just people misinterpreting the original statements IMO.

I think without this announcement, it was always more than likely that MGS4 would have an online component.
What I am most curious about is that if they intend to put the servers back up in 2007, could that have any relation to the time for when MGS4 will be released, and it's online component being used? It could be completely independent of MGS4 and it's workings, but again there might be some relation.

I don't get the appeal of Metal Gear Solid games..
If you played through any of the games, you would have understood. The storyline [especially MGS2] has a lot of plot twists, badass characters [I'm not spoiling it for you, so don't even try!], the whole series is so fascinating. I can't believe people can't see this from the moment "mysterious attacker" in the shell struts begun.
People loved MGS for the memorable scenes. And that's why MGS2 excelled. The only thing that kept it from being as masterful as the original MGS, is it has plot holes.
So, this is the reason why MGS3 was created; to show the beginnings, and evolution of the characters that you see in MGS/MGS2. I hope our answers are answered with MGS4.
Kojima says in the Saga Vol 1 disc, that MGS4 will completely close the chapter of the trilogy. At least Kojima wants it like that.

I've beaten MGS2 the most (around 13 times), MGS1 (7 times) beat MGS3 in one 16hr sit down on its release day, bought subsistance but never got around to beating it again... *might do that when he gets home* or maybe I should beat Portable Ops... hmmmYeah the first one was the best, but the tranq gun was awesome....I just watched the entire Metal Gear Solid cut-scenes over and plan to go through Subsistence this weekend.
OFF-TOPIC, just be Resistance!!! WOW what a game!!!! Definitely a franchise I"m looking to forward to see more iterations of. It shows how much story really helps games-at least for older audiences...

I keep watching the TGS trailer off my PS3 and it looks absolutly beautiful. The atmosphere screams epic and its only a freakin trailer.....a trailer. How does Kojima do it?
I remember when I first saw the trailer I wasn't too impressed by some of the animations (mainly the way the soldiers walked) and I'm still not but overall I think the game will be great based solely on previous installments. Does anyone know if some of the animations will be tweaked and improved? Or do you think it's already finalized?
LiquidEagle
04-09-2007, 04:59 AM
Well dnp, remember that this is also an early build, and I definitely believe the animations will be better by the time the game comes out -- look at how much MGS3 improved rather shortly before its release, and the original animations in both that and MGS2 (just watch MGS2's E3 2000 trailer's animations, they're way worse than the final game's) looked ancient compared to the final thing. So I most definitely think they'll be improved -- they may still be using MGS3 assets for those animations for all we know, and I have zero doubt that the final game will have amazing animations as always.
dnpmakkah
04-09-2007, 05:03 AM
Honestly the animations as a whole weren't an issue, I just noticed it when the soldiers were walking. I do hope it gets improved but if it doesn't then I don't really care. I know once I begin playing the game I won't notice something as small as that since I will be completly drawn in.

They're not really bad but definantly need to evolve imo. If they stayed the same it wouldn't be the end of the world but it would be nice element to add realism and that next-gen feel.

MGS4 won't be delayed. I dunno why Three Speech threw in that comment about MGS4 possibly being pushed into next year ("Knowing Kojima," they said... /rolls eyes), but Kojima will get it out this year -- he worked himself sick (literally) getting MGS2 out on time and perfectly made the date on MGS3. Twin Snakes was the only MGS to get a delay and Konami wasn't making that, so :-p

I don't want them to rush MGS4, but at the same time I've got the feeling that Kojima will somehow manage to release it this year (even though I feel it's a bit early). Maybe it'll just be released in Japan this year while the US and Europe will get it after Xmas, because the fall is going to be full of really great games. However, he has mentioned that he wants it out the same day worldwide, so...

Like I said, I have no doubt that KojiPro's gonna have it out by the end of 2007. Comparatively for MGS3, there was zero story information and zero gameplay information at this point in its development -- we didn't know anything about any of the characters yet, and we didn't have any kind of real knowledge on the Cure system, camo index, and CQC except for buzz words from the trailers :-p

So far as I'm aware it's purely language-based, not only do characters have to have different dialogue depending on the version, but they also have to have their mouths and mannerisms synchronised with them.
As far as regions go though, there shouldn't be any reason not to be able to import the Japanese version should it come out first.

Not to mention Kojima getting physically ill from spending so much time working on the game -- that's dedication!
I think the English voiceovers are a good sign of this game's progress though -- we didn't get an MGS3 trailer with English voices until... August 2004? I think it was the Leipzig trailer, and that was a mere 3 months before it actually came out! They could have fully-dubbed cinemas (though not fully touched up) presentable in like a month (which is realistic IMO since they're done creating assets and are now "shooting" the game) in English bodes well for this game's progress :-D

the whole reason raiden is there is to show how tough and wise snake is. He is more of what he is when juxtaposed to a softer rookie. When you can kill those new MG's all on your own instead of hide with your camo suit... do you really have to ask that question??
there is no reason for Snake not being able to take down those robots as well. the thing is, if you were a fan of MGS you would know that most don't take a direct route between two lines or take out every single enemy in the game. you can finish MGS games with out killing anybody (except boss fights-duh).
the thing is, you would probably risk a lot and not have enough ammo to take down every robot. best way is to 'sneak' by. the game is called 'tactical espionage' not 'Rambo on even more steroids'. ;)

I wondered what the hell that game was and why it never saw the light of day. It was kinda fun.

it was like Kojima's Onimusha/Devil may Cry ...
but it was fun , the fighting system was way better than Oni's ( even for a Minigame ) .
i think Kojima was just want to do something different , or just to prove he could do other genre , because he is very busy with MGSs .
but if he put a fast action mini game for Raiden in MGS4 just like MGS3 Snake's nightmare ..then i will send my two kidneys to him in japan via DHL

My guess is it was a smaller Konami School project that was just being toyed around with and they put it in the game some way.

The "Guy Savage" minigame was designed by Shuyo Murata, but I don't know whether it was ever intended to be a full game, an experiment or simply a nice addition to MGS3.

maybe Shuyo Murata will make it as his "own" project ( with story , characters and stuff ) after MGS4 ? Konami still want a DMC/ONIMUSHA clone/killer to beat Capcom ..
Edit : is that fernando alonso on your avatar ?

eep!
Shuyo Murata can do whatever the hell he wants -- ZoE2 was glorious and he's the man Kojima saw fit to entrust the MGS series with directing duties. All Hail!!

I wouldn't mind seeing some metal gear raiden spin offs.
But I still want ZOE3 first.
Some sweet MGS art my friend Richie did. For a ,'make a movie poster' project.

He used William Fichtner (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001209/)for the reference, who we think would make the perfect solid and liquid snake.

Nice! I realised he looked a lot like William Fichtner before I read it. However, he'd need hair implants to impersonate any of the Snakes :-p
