Dude, being obsessed with the green and the no.s along with it is just f'd up. More like ... therapy level f'd up. I repped you already but was kinda surprised to read later you're whoring for it. It's just a frikkin no. , get back to watching that MGS4 trailer. Your hard work is appreciated regardless of the size of rep number clinged to your posts.
How do u know this?? is there a trailer with english subs ? Or do u just know Nihongo??
I understand 0.00009% of Japanese whenever I can. And that part was it. I also believe VAMP at one point cries out OUCH in the trailer, correct me if wrong.

Numbers, trends, or whatever, it's still petty and irrelevant. Oh, and if you're calling attention to you posting the links first (on page 191), I'm sure it has a lot to do with it being bottom of the page. People miss these things. I just noticed it because I was on that page looking for the transcript in english.

Epix, you need to see a shrink man. Obsession for rep , can you even read what you writing there? I'm sure everyone here appreciates your efforts n all but you're acting really retarded I'm afraid.
Ah whatever, this is an MGS4 thread. Quit whining about not receiving reps. Let the MGS4 talk began.
I was wrong about VAMP saying OUCH, it was Snake n Otacon discussion in the background n I mistook it as Vamp saying ouch. Not my language, now proved.

Just chill everyone... let's just pass it... I don't think anyone wants to spoil all this awesome MGS4-age. He was just talking generally and let's all just accept that Epix wanted to say something, I bet it's been on his mind for a bit since he thinks it's a trend and he made it clear it wasn't about getting repped or numbers this time or any other time, just a general feeling from the forums.
But let's all just chill now, and we'll all just be considerate of what he felt he needed to say and let's all take it in stride and move on, kk? :)

P.S. None of this 'you're acting retarded crap,' that's not reasonable.

TGS 2007: Metal Gear Online Starts Off Free
Konami's upcoming MGS shoot-em-up will come packaged with MGS4.
by IGN Staff
September 19, 2007 - Clearing up some confusion regarding the release of Metal Gear Online -- the upcoming networked multiplayer game set in the Metal Gear universe -- Hideo Kojima and Konami officially set firm its release plans for the game at a TGS conference held yesterday in Japan.
Metal Gear Online will in fact be bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4, as originally planned way back when the mode was announced. The confusion on this point came up when Konami independently announced the game at a special Konami Metal Gear conference held a few days after E3 2007. Previously, Metal Gear Online was assumed to be part of the overall Metal Gear Solid 4 release (as in MGS3: Subsistence), but the press conference presentation hinted that it would be its own product, with perhaps its own pricing structure and release date. There were also rumors about the possibility of Metal Gear Online being a PlayStation Network downloadable title.
Those questions are settled (at least for now -- the possibility of a PSN version of MGO outside of MGS4 seem quite possible), as Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4 will come bundled with the Metal Gear Online Starter Pack. Exactly what is in that Starter Pack (and what kind of additional content will be available beyond the Starter Pack, and when it will be available) was not announced at the event. Online charges (if any) were also not discussed.
Metal Gear Solid 4 and the Metal Gear Online Starter Pack are together planned for a worldwide release in 2008.
Nice huh!

Jealous the attendees of Tokyo Game Show have a chance to go hands-on with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots? Do you wonder why a demo made available for the public couldn't just be distributed over the PlayStation Network, too? I'm totally going to end up killing the party with this one, but 1UP Japan fed me the wrong information. Kojima Productions "would like to" release a demo, but there's no active plans -- yet. Sorry, guys, I had no intention to mislead, which is why I'm dropping this here before it even updates on 1UP's front page. Everyone home in the office was reloading the PlayStation Store, too. TGS 07: Metal Gear Solid 4 Hands-On With the Demo
TOKYO--You may have heard of Metal Gear Solid 4 by now. It's one of the PlayStation 3's most important exclusive titles in the race for next-gen dominance. It's creator/director Hideo Kojima's purported last outing with his seminal stealth series. And it's playable here at the Tokyo Game Show. We were lucky enough to sit down with illustrious Kojima Productions producer Ryan Payton for an all-too-brief 90 minutes with the game, during which we found that many familiar mechanics have changed. But the heart of Metal Gear Solid is definitely still beating here.
First, it's worth pointing out that the demo of the game we played is essentially the same one Kojima Productions began demonstrating publicly back in July--so if you haven't seen that video yet, take a look to see everything we're talking about here. Luckily, Payton contextualized the action we played in the demo and filled us in on the initial story of the game as well. As it turns out, that gameplay demo is set only about 15 minutes into Metal Gear Solid 4, so you'll basically watch the intro sequence and play a very brief section, and then end up right there in that dusty village setting that we've seen so much of over the last two years. Payton confirmed during our demo this Middle Eastern area is just one of the locales you'll visit over the course of the game, so just because that's all we've seen of MGS4 so far, don't think the entire game--or even the majority of it--takes place there. Payton let slip that you'll also travel to South America later in the game, among other places.
Before we jumped into the demo, we stepped back and got the scoop on the storyline at the outset of MGS4. The game will begin with Col. Campbell contacting Solid Snake to deliver the disturbing intelligence that Liquid Snake is alive and running Outer Heaven, a dummy corporation that oversees and controls private military companies all over the world. The PMCs will essentially act as Liquid's private army throughout the game, so they'll be the on-the-ground enemy forces you'll be fighting against. The PMCs will actually vary between areas; for instance, the company in the Middle East was called Praying Mantis, but the one in South America will have a different name and appearance.
Further intelligence indicates that Liquid is currently operating in the Middle East, so Campbell essentially hires Snake to travel there and perform a contract hit on Liquid and put an end to his machinations. It's important to note that the villain we're talking about here is actually Liquid Ocelot--Revolver Ocelot's body with Liquid Snake's attached arm and consciousness. So the bad guy will look like Ocelot, but there's nothing of Ocelot left in there--the personality is 100 percent Liquid Snake. However, you'll hear Ocelot's voice actor delivering the English voiceover in the forthcoming TGS trailer and in the final game, so no more Cam Clarke here (sorry Ninja Turtles fans).
At any rate, Snake's first objective on the ground in the Middle East was to meet up with a group of informants that have been tracking Liquid's movements, which we found out through a dialogue scene with longstanding support character Otacon via codec transmission. The codec interface has come a long way since the minimal, 2D talking heads in the first MGS. Now, it's been overhauled to show a video window of the speaker that takes up a much larger portion of the screen (though you don't see Snake during codec scenes anymore). Otacon was sitting in a fully 3D-modeled room that we could move the camera around in a limited fashion, so you'll get some visual context on where your codec buddies are physically located every time you talk to them. Another nice feature is that you can fast forward by hitting triangle--complete with super-fast dialogue delivery and sped-up animation--and then let off the button to let the conversation resume with full spoken dialogue. Payton confirmed that the lips will be synced to the audio in MGS4 rather than tuned by hand, so the lip sync should be much more believable in the English and other localized versions of the game.
To find the informants, we had to move down a length of streets and nearly demolished houses to reach the rendezvous point. You can watch that gameplay demo from July to essentially track our progress through the area, although like much of the game, this section had more than one path through. In the starting area, for instance, we could move down the street itself on the left--but that route was blocked by a number of Praying Mantis soldiers and a large armored vehicle with a top-mounted gun turret (which Payton said will replace the security cameras of previous games). So we chose to break to the right and cut through some ruined buildings, which afforded us a number of crawlspaces and blast holes that we could slink through and avoid most of the soldiers in the area.
So how does the game play? As mentioned, it's both different and the same, in that the actions you perform--things like taking cover and pulling close-quarters combat moves on unsuspecting soldiers--are still in here, but the control methods you use to perform them are different and largely streamlined over past games. The "action" interface--that is, anything you make Snake do that isn't combat-related--is now assigned solely to the triangle button. That ranges from climbing up ladders and vaulting over low barriers to simply walking up to a wall and taking cover against it (which you used to do by running Snake headfirst into the wall). Anytime there's an available contextual action, you'll get a small icon at the bottom indicating what you can do by hitting triangle. We saw one exception to this rule when Snake climbed into a garbage container, which puts you into first-person view: You'll have to flick the Sixaxis upward forcefully to push the lid open and climb back out.
Crouching is less awkward than it used to be, as well. Previously, you had to tap X multiple times--first to crouch and then to go prone--which made you end up in a position other than the one you wanted, as often as not. Now you can hit X once to drop to a crouch or hold X to go straight to prone, which ought to eliminate the confusion. Better, you can now move around in the crouch position, instead of dropping to a crawl as soon as you started moving forward. This will make Snake less visible and make less noise as you move around, and it didn't seem like he moved much more slowly than in a full running position, so this will probably be many players' default stance as they move around the game.
From what we could tell, the biggest changes to MGS4's gameplay are in the shooting controls, which have never been the MGS series' strongest point. The game uses a low third-person camera like the one first seen in MGS3: Subsistence, so it's already more like a third-person shooter than the previous, predominantly stealth-oriented outings. Furthermore, you'll have an auto-aim setting that you can turn on which will essentially lock your aim to the enemy most directly in Snake's line of sight. (You'll see a small hovering icon indicating which enemy you're locked onto.) Then you'll hold L1 to engage the lock, so that you can fire at and strafe around that enemy while you're running around.
More skilled players will be able to toggle the auto-aim with a tap of the square button, which makes Snake unable to fire from the hip. Why would you want to do that? Because with auto-aim off, holding L1 will bring the camera down to a Gears of War-style over-the-shoulder firing mode that lets you aim precisely for headshots and the like. You can also switch which of Snake's shoulders you're looking over, depending on the surrounding cover. You lose the advantage of being able to kill enemies on the run with the auto-aim turned off, but we found the manual aim mode let us kill enemies much more quickly by aiming for the head. You'll get quite a satisfying ragdoll effect when you take troops down this way, as well; they look like they go down hard with the impact of your bullets.
That's when you actually want to shoot at your foes, anyway. It will still behoove you to remain hidden and neutralize your enemies silently, or it wouldn't be a Metal Gear game. We gained a better understanding of Metal Gear's new threat warning indicators as we played. Kojima Productions has done away with the alert levels in previous games; now, the intensity with which enemies are searching for you will primarily be indicated by contextual means like the background music. You'll also have a translucent ring around Snake that will act as a combination of the old radar and alert indicator. The ring will lay still when you're not in danger at all, but it will become rippled and turn red when enemies are gunning for you. Each ripple will point in the direction of a nearby enemy, and the size of the ripple will indicate how close they are to you. Payton said this change was made to keep your eyes focused directly on the action, rather than making you stare at a small radar map in the corner of the screen to avoid pursuit.
There will be more battlefield influences on Snake for you to contend with in MGS4, though we only got the bare overview of them in our demo (Payton said the team doesn't want to give too much away about these mechanics yet). Directly underneath the health bar is your psych meter, which is broken into four segments. Your psych meter will diminish in extreme heat or other adverse weather conditions (temperature, weather, and wind direction are indicated in the map screen), and it can even go down due to the stench when you climb into a dumpster. To raise your psych once it's gone down...why, you whip out your favorite nudie magazine, of course. This process is surprisingly involved. You'll bring the magazine up in first-person view to see the lovely, mostly bikini-clad ladies within, and each new picture will rapidly replenish your psych for a few seconds. The rub (ahem) is, Snake will quickly tire of each picture, so you'll have to keep flipping through the issue to keep getting psych back. We're sure committed players (cough) will make a point of recovering all the magazines in the game. Alas, Payton didn't talk much about what psych will influence, other than to say that Snake can pass out when the meter is fully depleted.
Then there's the stress indicator, expressed as a percentage underneath the psych bar. This one is influenced more directly by battle conditions. When you're safely hidden in the shadows, it will sit at zero. When you're being pursued, it may go up a few points. When you're running down a street in a hail of gunfire with bombs exploding around you, your stress level will soar, and it's at these times you'll achieve a sort of "combat high" that will increase your firing accuracy and halve the damage you take from enemies. This boon only lasts about 15 seconds, though, after which you'll crash from the high and your accuracy and such will actually go down. It's not clear yet whether you'll be able to control the use of this effect, or whether it will simply kick in when the conditions are right.
Close-quarters combat has also been enhanced for MGS4. You'll be able to do a basic melee move when you get up close to an enemy and you have a two-handed weapon like a rifle equipped, but you'll get the best CQC moves when you're using a pistol or the new stun knife. As before, you can throw an enemy or cut his throat after you grapple with him, but there will be more complex moves available for advanced players. We pulled off a fairly difficult submission hold move of sorts that required us to first grapple, then crouch, then let off the hold button briefly, flick the analog stick to the side, then press the hold button again. This forced the enemy onto the ground, where Snake quickly rendered him unconscious. These advanced moves will be most useful for neutralizing enemies quickly and non-lethally, it seems.
Sure, Metal Gear is all about sneaking, but some sections of MGS4 will actually encourage you to go nuts with all the those military toys you find in a Metal Gear Solid game. Payton referred to these sections as "warfare" levels, where you won't even have to worry about stealth; you'll just run straight into the fray and let loose with all your weapons. In the demo, we had access to a number of rifles and submachine guns, shotguns, pistols, sniper rifles (which you can now fire from the hip, rather than being locked into the scope view), and even the anti-tank javelin weapon, which we used to obliterate a couple of those turret-equipped armored vehicles.
It's in these warfare sections that you'll best be able to prove your mettle to the local militia fighting against Liquid's PMCs. To win their trust, you'll simply have to avoid killing them, and focus on killing the PMC soldiers. You can also approach militiamen and use the triangle button to hand them healing items like rations. They'll verbally thank you and otherwise indicate that they're impressed with your help, and afterward they'll refrain from attacking you and simply help you fight against Liquid's soldiers instead.
When you're fighting through the all-out warfare areas, you'll get to rely on the most diverse array of weaponry yet in a Metal Gear game. That's because you can now modify your weapons extensively as you acquire new gear for them. Each weapon will have multiple mount points that you can attach new equipment to. In the example we saw, the M4 rifle had a top mount where we could stick a scope, and a bottom mount that would accept a flashlight, grenade launcher, or several other pieces of gear. Almost every weapon will now have an alternate fire mode in the game, which is also how you'll use that interesting stun knife we mentioned earlier. Primarily, you'll slash with it--but it also has a taser integrated, so you can zap an enemy with the alt-fire instead if you want.
We also received a couple of entertaining toys from Otacon toward the end of the demo. The Metal Gear Mark II can be seen in the gameplay demo video, which you can use for battlefield recon and to zap unsuspecting enemies with its included taser weapon. The Mk. II can only go so far before it loses signal, though, and enemies can still take it out if they see it. We also got the "solid eye" eyepiece, which gives you a tactical battlefield readout that identifies other soldiers as either militia or PMC members, as well as showing you the location of weapons you can pick up in the field. The solid eye will also offer a zoom mode like the old scope, which will let you read this information from a distance, and an infrared mode that shows you highlighted human beings and important battlefield features set against a background of green video noise.
At the end of the demo, we finally reached the rendezvous point and found none other than redheaded Meryl Silverburgh and her new unit, Rat Patrol. This group is apparently a UN-sanctioned strike force tasked with keeping tabs on Liquid Ocelot's movements around the world. Meryl's Rat Patrol unit consists of the two burly characters (one bald, one with a mohawk) that you can see in the latest trailer, as well as Johnny, the inept soldier with the weak stomach who's been showing up throughout the Metal Gear Solid series as comic relief. Too bad the demo ended there; we're really curious now to see where the story is going.
Finally, it's worth mentioning that we played MGS4 with the just-announced-this-morning Dual Shock 3, Sony's vibration-equipped PS3 controller. The thing looks just like the Sixaxis and is weighted about the same as the old PS2 version of the Dual Shock, from what we could tell. The rumble effects in the demo were appropriate for the combat and traversal actions we were taking, too. There's really not much of a story here--it's just traditional force feedback that works like you'd expect--but we're glad all the same that Sony was able to integrate it into the PS3's controls before MGS4 ships, as this is the sort of game that would really benefit from the inclusion of force feedback.
Frankly, an hour and a half felt like far too short a time with a demo we probably could have spent all day mining for details. There are even more mechanics at work in MGS4 that bear description. For instance, we learned that you'll be able to save patterns that you've acquired for Snake's octo-camouflage suit for later use in the game. We'll just have to wait till Konami opts to show more of the game to the press--or if we're really unlucky, until it ships to retail--before we can report more of the new gameplay and story details that Kojima and his 200-strong team have poured into Metal Gear Solid 4.

TGS 2007: No MGS4 Demo Planned
Rumored TGS demo release debunked.
US, September 20, 2007 - Earlier today, the rumor mill practically exploded with news that Kojima Productions would be releasing the TGS demo of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on the PSN. The demo, which placed Snake in the same war zone seen at the Metal Gear 20th anniversary, also showed off new features such as the Octo-Camo, revamped CQC and weapon customization elements. It also extended scenes from the recently released press conference trailer that showed Meryl, Johnny and Snake in a bombed out building. Sadly, the rumor turned out to be a false one.
We contacted Ryan Payton at Kojima Productions, who was handling the MGS4 demo behind closed doors at the Tokyo Game Show, about the possibility of the demo being released. While he said the team would be interested in considering the release of a Metal Gear Solid Demo, there are no plans to release the TGS demo over the PSN at this time, or potentially ever. It appears that this was all a case of wishful thinking on someone's part.

No it wasn't Resident Evil (4) which introduced the over-the-shoulder camera for shooting. No, it can't be :P
I like references but hate it when they are taken out of the proportions. Give solid respect where it's due /you, you *journalists* Stewie voice/.
Haptic feedback helps the immersive parts of any MGS game so it's great to have it supported straight out of the box. As many have mentioned the rumble isn't that essential in many situations but with some titles it's mandatory: feeling the pulse in a closet anyone? :)

One thing ive noticed is that there arent´as many walls in the game (or demo should we say) as previous game and so the sneaking part seems to have been numbed down a bit in the game to allow for more action scenes to take place i suppose. I mean I can.t seem to find that suspense of sneaking in any of the videos like i did with MGS1 and 2.
Buildings naturally provde for a sneaking enviroment and so with these outside levels its just a matter of finding an alternative route rather than sit and wait or crawl. But the levels are much bigger so it does sorta provide that alternative route to reach your goals.

My counter to that is, its a demo even more so a gaming convention demo. it has to be fast paced and action pack for the gamer to have a good experience in the matter of the 5-10 mins he gets to play it.
I dont think it would be a good idea to have a 'demo' where you sneak around and not get to do a single action-y thing :P It may please us die hard sneaking fans. But 90% of the gamers at TGS that will get to play the MGS4 demo dont wanna sneak around. they know how sneaking works. they wanna test ou the new camera, the new overshoulder shooting, the new weapons, the new grenade system. not to sneak around for 10 mins and get to shoot 1 guy... woopee :P

Thats true I suppose, and there seems to be a icy (ALASKA...?) level in the game. But another thing ive noticed is that when Snake gets shot at its like nothings happened, only a bit of blood coming out. Seem to remember snake jerking when being shot at in MGS2 which made shot out battles harder like the one in the Tanker.

It'd be cool if MGS4 in game could look like those standalone character pics. The luster makes them look maybe a little less real, but very CG like, it looks kind of cool when it's a little flash and really smooth.

This game does look great. The textures are great, the character models are highly detailed, the buildings are cool, the vehicles look good, etc.
Also, the gameplay looks very fun.
The only suggestion I would make is that the faces and skin of the characters could use some fake sub-surface scattering. They look a little plastic like in my opinion. I am NOT saying they don't look good. They just could be improved.

Could this be for real or is it just another over exited games reviewer? If this is true Kojima and team are doing even more than I expected, but then again when you have over 200 great devs on the team this should become easier.

Its one of those things (imo) that Im going to have to wait to see. 1080p has been thrown around so frequently this gen., but as of right now of course its not beyond the realm of possibility. Maintaining this level of detail and running a native 1080p res. would make this the hands down most impressive game this gen. upon launch.

1080P is worthless I say. The devs need to trade off soo much for it, it isn't worth it imho. I'd rather have 720P/60 than 1080P/30 (even if completely locked and stable).
Next generation will show "real" 1080P, but for now, 720P is more than enough. I don't even know why devs want to do it.

ohh i so agree with you :)
devs just give up this 1080p shit. 60fps more stuff and no sacrifices.
I too agree with this considering I wasn't that impressed with 1080p when I hooked my PS3 up to my Mate's Dad's £2500 Panasonic Plasma.

Right now the only reason to make a 1080P game is to please Sony by helping them sell more HDTVs.
I think only 2% of people have 1080P TVs. It does not make sense to use up so much resources for something very few people will enjoy. If you put it into enhancing a 720P version you can produce a game with better graphics.

NO! eventually devs will be able to make games with amazing visuals, great framerates, at 1080p... but not unless they learn how to do it.

I will defo need to see this to believe it, 1080p for MGS4 is a dream for me. Plus I don't consider Gamespot to be the most ideal source to get this kind of questionable material from, they aren't exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Kojima doesn't care for HD so I strongly doubt he is going to even try 1080p and I doubt even stronger that Sony is going to 'force' him (so don't mention this one folks).

Haters can hate, but 1080P at 60fps is the holy grail this generation period.
If you have not seen a game running at 1080 60fps you have no real experience to give an opinion... I played Ninja Gaiden Sigma at 1080p 60fps and the game looks amazing and crisp at that resolution. The same applies to NBA 08 running at that resolution. I don't want to hear shit about screen tearing, because 720P games experience the same issues.
I would like to see every game running at 1080P 60fps and I know that's not practical, but when have consumers ever been practical.

I agree Nameless. At my house I have 2 HDTVs, one is a 52 inch 720p plasma, and the other is a 70 inch 1080p SXRD, and you can tell a huge differance. On the 52 inch both look very good and I can see how someone may not see a diff, but when you fire up Lair and Heavanly Sword in 720 and then go to 1080 on Lair on the bigger TV you can see a great differance. With Lair running at such a high resolution it looses very little detail, and I think it actually give more detail. However HS really starts to look streched out at 70 inches and 720p, this makes it look like the graphics are more PS2 like. I know that it only effects a very small percent of people right now, but it is great for thouse people, and in 10 years from now when you go back and play it on your 100 inch Laser TV on PS4 you will be very happy they made it in 1080p today.

Hmm
Well Guis i have found a 2 Walkthroughs of MGS4 (in japanese though).
The first Video is kinda lame, no action just explaining the game and whatever, showing off octo-camo and all. There is a convo with Otacon and Snake (which translated i will post lower towards the bottom).
The second video i have yet to watch but it looks like its gonna be like real playing.
Link Vid1: http://www.geevee.com/index.php?p=viewvideo&v=5931
Link Vid2:
http://www.geevee.com/index.php?p=viewvideo&v=5941
Translation o Convo (spoilers kind of)
:POSSIBLE SPOILER:
Otacon: "Snake, what's your status?"
Snake: "I have just infiltrated the city, but there is a huge number of geckos around here."
Otacon: "This is the "Gekko", a bipedal walking weapon manufactured by AT company. Its product name is Irving. It became enormously popular among every PMC - its service number surpasses the one of the military tank vehicles. Not only it features a strong armour but its agile & fast. The most important is to stay low when you see gekkos."
Snake: "Copy that. It's an unmanned machine nevertheless. Besides sooner or later the human beings will be "obsolete” (i.e. machines will replace us)"
Otacon: "Even so, the amount of gekkos walking out there is really strange. There are other things that have more value than this war. Surely its because Liquid is a part of this war.
Snake: "So is he really here?"
Otacon: "Well, first I will have to meet in person with a US military informant and inquire about it. But Snake, before you get your hands dirty, I want you to know that I have prepared Metal Gear MKII as your scout-aid. Its waiting you close by."
Snake: "MKII?"
Otacon: "It’s a remote-mobile-terminal that I have build together with Sunny. It provides map-info & battle-condition-info. Thus I want you to head for its place."
Snake : "Copy that."
Otacon: "I have marked the meeting location. I am waiting there."
:SPOILER:
Btw i have taken all of this from this (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=191470&page=44)thread at neogaf.

They flashback to PS1 graphics? Why don't they just remake it and filter a newly made scene? It's not like they need to flashback to it for extended areas and periods of time right? I wish they would just remodel it, PS1 to PS3 is a bit far, I was ok with it in the MGS2 though, i thought it looked in place.

And on the same side of nostalgia, familiarity, in the sense that, I think, those scenes are iconic, and trigger immediate memories and feelings of that experience, playing it, as opposed to remodeling it with the current specs, though easier on the eyes, might not be recognizable right away, and wouldn't have the same visceral effect.

I thought about this reason that you just put here, and I think this makes the most sense. The old ones are instantly recognizable, where newly made ones would not be. That's probably why MGS2 contained MGS1 material as well, and now the same here.

Metal Gear Solid series director gives more details on PS3 stealth actioner, reveals Metal Gear Online starter pack will be included in game.
By Hirohiko Niizumi, GameSpot
Posted Sep 23, 2007 1:28 pm PT
It's become a tradition for Konami director Hideo Kojima to hold a stage presentation every year at the Tokyo Game Show. This year was no exception, and GameSpot was there to cover it.
Visitors to Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4 area were given a thick, 50-page booklet that was sure to be a treat for fans of the stealth-action series. Aside from pages of CG artwork, photos from the development scenes, columns, and interview articles, the booklet also gave a little bit more detail on MGS4's storyline.
The latest Metal Gear saga takes place five years after MGS2, but the world has dramatically changed in that short time period. After the Big Shell incident in Manhattan, the US government required all soldiers working for Private Military Companies (PMCs) to be injected by nanomachines called the SOP (Sons Of the Patriots), which control their physical capabilities and emotions. The new technology allowed war zones to be completely controlled by PMCs. As a result, wars expanded, and PMCs grew larger and larger. By the time the game starts, warfare has become a vital part of the world's economy.
Roy Campbell now works for a subsidiary organ under the United Nations and reviews PMCs. According to his research, the total combined PMC military forces have grown to a size equivalent to that of the US Army. What's more, the top five PMCs are all operated by a single mother company named Outer Haven, commanded by Liquid Ocelot.
In order to assassinate his brother, Solid Snake--who has aged into an old, gray-haired man due to defects in his DNA--makes his way into the war zone in the Middle East.
The new trailer shown at TGS hinted that Liquid had kidnapped Doctor Naomi Hunter to hijack the SOP system and to lead an insurrection, although his motives aren't explained yet. It can only be assumed that he's trying to create the Outer Haven that Big Boss attempted to make: a utopia for soldiers, where they can battle forever without interference from forces such as politics.
Director Hideo Kojima appeared on stage at Konami's booth and started off by talking about the new bosses in MGS4. Although they were revealed to the press last month, this is the first time that Kojima directly showed them off to the public himself.
"In the first Metal Gear Solid, we featured a special forces unit that consisted of elite active soldiers," he explained. "In MGS2, we needed an even stronger team, and after a while of thinking, we went with a special forces unit that trains and instructs other special forces units. We decided to give superhuman abilities to those characters, kind of like in American comics. In MGS3, we had to make even stronger characters, so we went with a 'legendary' special forces unit."
"MGS4 was really tough since we had to go beyond legendary soldiers, so we thought that it might be better off if they weren't human. We made [a unit of] monsters, called the Beauty and the Beast," said Kojima, outlining the birth behind the oddly shaped new set of bosses in MGS4.
As GameSpot reported last month, Beauty and the Beast is a unit of four monster-like ladies that are, for an unknown reason, named like the special forces unit in MGS1: Laughing Octopus, Crying Wolf, Raging Raven, and Screaming Mantis.
The team members all look like bionic monsters, but they're actually women. Each has distinct characteristics. Laughing Octopus is constantly laughing as she makes her deadly rounds with bionic tentacles made of the same technology as Solidus Snake's appendages in MGS2. Octopus can also use the same thermoptic camouflage that Old Snake uses throughout the game, so finding her could be prove to be tricky.
Raging Raven is constantly in a state of anger. As her name suggests, she has wings, which are made of the same technology as those of the biomechanic bomber creatures called sliders seen in previous trailers of MGS4. Raven is strong enough alone, but she can also call out the sliders, which makes her an even tougher opponent. Crying Wolf is always crying, and she's the fastest monster in the unit, being able to use all four feet for running.
Finally, Screaming Mantis should be quite an interesting character for series fans. Leaving aside the fact that she's always screaming, she's got extra hands and she carries marionettes that allow her to control soldiers in the war zone. Her two marionettes are modeled after Psycho Mantis from MGS1 and The Sorrow from MGS3, and Kojima promised the reason behind the resemblance will be in the game.
According to Kojima, the player's objective against the Beauty and the Beast unit is not to kill them. Much like the "little sisters" in BioShock, the monsters were originally girls with pure hearts, and it's up to the player to rescue them from their misery.
"There's the old fairytale about the beauty and the beast, where the character gets enchanted in the forest and gets turned into a beast," said Kojima. "These girls have been turned into a beast by the forest known as the war zone. It's up to the player as to whether or not they can break the spells on the girls."
For players that can lift their curses, there's a little bonus. As previously reported, Kojima used live actresses to model the Beauty and the Beast unit, and he also took 3D data of their faces. If the player can rescue them, they'll be able to unmask the beauty inside the beast and see what they actually look like.
Kojima confirmed that Raging Raven is modeled after actress Yumi Kikuchi, who's also doing the motion-capture acting and voices for the Japanese release. He kept the rest of the voice actor identities a secret, saying that it'll be up to the player to discover them.
Kojima then went on to give some details on the new characters that were shown in the TGS trailer: Drebin, Sunny, Big Mama, Johnathan, Ed, Johnny, and the Haven Troopers. Drebin is an arms wholesaler who delivers weapons registered to a corresponding solider with matching SOP nanomachines in them. Since he is able to modify these weapons, Drebin will play an important role in the game: delivering various kinds of arms to Snake.
As can be seen in the trailer, Drebin has a hairless pet monkey in shorts named Little Gray. According to Kojima, the motion-capture actor who played Raiden was extremely good at monkey impersonations, so Kojima decided to add one as a sidekick to Drebin, especially given that Drebin seemed a bit plain compared to the other characters in the game.
Kojima and art director Youji Shikawa explained that Drebin was one of the first characters to be written in MGS4's plot, but they had a hard time making him stand out. The developers decided to make him a master of magic tricks, and they hired a real professional magician for Drebin's motion captures. In the Japanese release, Drebin is voiced by Keiji Fujiwara, the same man who did Sigint in MGS3.
Sunny is a 9-year-old genius who is also the daughter of Olga, who died in Metal Gear Solid 2. Kojima joked that this is the first time a little girl is appearing in the series, and that she's been extremely vital to uplifting the spirits of the MGS4 developers because the other characters in the game are all old. In the Japanese release, Sunny will be voiced by Kikuko Inoue (Rosemary in MGS2, The Boss in MGS3).
"Sunny plays a central role in MGS4. Like her name says, she's like the sun, with the other characters in the game revolving around her. She's extremely important," said Kojima.
Another thing that the Metal Gear Solid series hasn't had up until now is an aged woman. Eva from MGS3 returns to the game as a strong lady that's around 80 years old. She's now known under the code name of "Big Mama," and she's fighting against the Patriots.
"She's called Big Mama. Her name might suggest something, but I won't comment anything further on it," said Kojima, who also noted that Big Mama carries a Mauser C96 just like she did back in MGS3. The gun is one of Kojima's favorites.
Kojima also gave some additional details to Meryl Silverburgh's teammates, who remained more or less nameless until now. The soldier with the Mohawk is named Johnathan, and he's mainly in charge of backup support. Johnathan's Mohawk looks like an exclamation mark when he's seen from the back, and as that might suggest, he isn't too fond of anyone catching him from behind. According to Kojima, Johnathan's motion captures were done by the MGS series' military advisor Motosada Mouri himself, so he moves a lot more professionally compared to the other characters in the game.
Meryl's other teammate, Ed, is the team's subleader. His specialties are in communication and sniping. If Johnathan and Ed's names seem familiar to old gamers, it's because Kojima named the two characters after the protagonists in his old adventure game, Policenauts.
Meryl's third team member is Johnny. The name should ring a bell to MGS fans; this is the same soldier who had stomach problems in the restroom, back in the original MGS. Kojima commented that Johnny is the least useful member in Meryl's team, as depicted in the last few seconds of the TGS trailer.
In the TGS trailer, Meryl's team gets assaulted by a group of armored soldiers. Kojima revealed that they're called the Haven troopers, and they're Liquid's special forces units. The Haven troopers wear the same enhanced muscle armor gear that Vamp wears on his legs, which allows them to move beyond normal human capabilities. Kojima also noted that the Haven troopers look a bit busty, hinting strongly that they are female.
Going on to talk about details in the game's system, Kojima introduced three new additions in MGS4: the Threat Ring, which acts like a radar and alert indicator; The Psyche Meter, which replaces the traditional stamina meter from previous MGS games; and the Baseline Map, which looks like the traditional radar map on the top of the screen but with a resizing circle in the middle that visualizes the presence of Snake. When Snake makes a noise or moves around, the circle gets bigger, which means that he's in an easier-to-discover state. If he crouches or lies on the ground, the circle becomes smaller.
Kojima and art director Shinkawa took their time to mention that there's going to be over 70 weapons in MGS4. What's more, players can customize their weapons by adding parts, such as a scope.
At the end of his presentation, Kojima showed off a trailer for Metal Gear Solid Online, and then announced that the game will be included in MGS4.
"We often get asked whether Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Solid Online will be sold separately," said Kojima. "Metal Gear Solid Online will be included in Metal Gear Solid 4, in the form of a 'Starter Pack.' Once the service launches, it'll keep on going with additional new stages, new rules, and so on. So in the end, MGSO will outlast MGS4."
Kojima's ended his presentation after inviting the audience to try out the MGS4 demo at Konami's booth.
As Kojima has said in the past, MGS4 is going to be the last adventure for Solid Snake, and most likely the last in the franchise that he'll direct. The thick Metal Gear Solid booklet given to visitors included some comments from Kojima, who seemed adamant as ever about his decisions.
"Solid Snake's story is really going to end in MGS4," explained Kojima in the booklet. "Using cloning [as a plot device] was really cheating. I wouldn't be working on [MGS4] if I thought there was a sequel… I've said it numerous times, but Solid Snake fought against a lot of strong foes back on the MSX, so we should've started from scratch when we worked on the PlayStation. But we released it as a sequel, so we had to bring out even stronger enemies. As a result, we had to create an adversary with the same strength [as Snake] and we decided to go with a clone storyline, but that's where things got difficult."
"One of my ideas [for MGS4's ending] was that, since Snake and Otacon are breaking the law in order to fulfill their justice, I was thinking of having them turn themselves in, and for the sake of justice, they'd get convicted and executed by the law," he explained. "But all of my staff went against the idea, so I decided not to go with that."
But even if Snake doesn't get executed at the end of MGS4, Kojima seems firm that he doesn't want Snake back.
"As long as there's a game called MGS5 and it's a game where you sneak around, it doesn't have to be Solid Snake, right? I'd like that to be created by the younger developers," he said. "To put it another way, Solid Snake is one character that I don't want to entrust to other people."
Shuyo Murata, one of the co-directors of MGS4, agreed in the booklet that Solid Snake just wouldn't be authentic if someone aside from Kojima depicted his continuing story.
"When someone other than director Kojima is writing, they can make scripts that sound like Solid Snake," Murata said. "But they can't write up a Solid Snake that's growing up. Snake in MGS4 really grew up [since MGS2], but only director Kojima can write that kind of material."
Whether a new hero will star in MGS5 remains to be seen, but if there's one thing that fans can be certain of, all the unsolved mysteries in the past three MGS installments will be answered in MGS4. "It's the concluding chapter, so we've even went around our own staff members to ask if they wanted anything answered," explained Kojima in the booklet. "It turns out that there's a lot."

YES!
Solid Snake is better than anyone else! He is too important! I am personally glad, no one but Kojima should be able to realize him.
MGS5 better not come out for a while after MGS4.

Game of the year stuff right here folks....
and to make things easier, MGS5 should just be a prequel...
after re-telling stories is over, then make a new hero, and have Snake as the ultimate bad guy...

That's sounds too simplistic and amateurish to put Snake in that situation...
Snake is the ultimate hero. This isn't some B movie ending Omni! Lol just playing.
Wouldn't mind an MGS1 redo though, or redo of Metal Gear 1 and 2? I dunno, I don't want to think about it anyway, MGS4 is coming soon!

Ya, I'm hoping when they say starter package it's just a mini thing to get the system going, and they just add stuff on for free, I'd love that as well.
Come on Sony, Home and Konami collaboration to keep the thing running, and have free additional stuff! Maybe that's asking too much, but I hope it can happen :)

If or When there is, Snake won't be in it because Kojima won't trust anyone else with him.

Since 1up now says, that MGO and MGS4 will be sold seperately, I hope Kojima does not sacrifice anything for the sake of the multiplayer part (I really doubt it, he is a man of honor and Snake is his (brain) child. I dunno, I didn't much like the multiplayer in Subsitance... But maybe it rocks in MGO?!? I can't tell yet.

Even if you don't like Subsistence's online, give MGO a go -- Subsistence represented 20% of KojiPro's ideas and had no real involvement from Kojima since he was already moving forward onto MGS4.

The new Kojima Report is up:
On Rumble,
Ryan was asked if it's safe to say that the rumble in DualShock3 is better than the rumble in DualShock2 and he said "Absolutely". Also they only got the drivers to add rumble into the game a week before TGS.
On the demo,
"All I can say is that as of tomorrow we're going to start working on the English demo."
Next Thursday the trailers for MGS4 and MGO should be on PSN
