ZOE2 is the best 4 hour, 54 minute, and 27 second game I've ever played in my life.

Until Okami came out, it was also by far the most beautiful game on PS2, no question about it. ZOE2 fucking ROCKS!!! Go play it now if you haven't, seriously.

Besides Piyotama, of course.
Piyotama is in a league of it's own. Maybe if ZOE3 is lucky, it can be about 10% as awesome as Piyotama, the G.O.A.T., is.

How iconic is that second video though? :) I remember playing the demo for the first time before the game came out, making my way up to the elevator thinking the graphics were amazing. Then i got to see the Hind D (says in snake voice) and i was stunned again buy the games visuals. walked around got surprised by the footprints :O then finding Meryl (snake voice). then getting to the DARPA c hief and then my fun was over. So i rest my console and played through it again and again and again XD the memories.

Kojima also revealed that the intro sequence for MGS4 will be done by Logan, replacing Kyle Cooper who worked on the previous two installments. The intro sequence of MGS3 let users control the screen, but according to Kojima, MGS4 is going to be even better and startling. "The customer-service phone line is going to be flooded with calls, and I'm going to get fired," joked Kojima.

Whatever the intro will be like, Kojima's idea behind it was big enough to even get developers jumping out of their seats. According to MGS4 codirector Shuyou Murata, "I totally flipped out when I heard about it. It's going to be like a promotional video, but there's going to be more to it."

Logan's Alex Tylevich was tight about releasing any details, but he gave some first hints, commenting, "It's going to be highly unusual for a video game opening. It's going to be very futuristic."

http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/adventure/metalgearsolid4/news.html?sid=6158568

Logan will also be designing the Metal Gear Solid 4 opening, Kojima revealed as he closed off the stage. The opening will have even more impact than the opening from part 3. It will be highly unusual for a videogame opening and will have game-like elements, said the logo designer.

Talking as part of an in-depth interview published on Gamasutra today, Kojima Productions' Ryan Payton has revealed that there are over 200 developers working to complete Metal Gear Solid 4 for PlayStation 3, also commenting on the game's use of DualShock 3.

Discussing the eagerly awaited Metal Gear Solid franchise continuation, which was one of the most high-profile titles at the recent Tokyo Game Show, Payton noted:

"But the game is definitely under a lot of pressure, because the way things are turning out, this could be the first "must have" PlayStation 3 title on store shelves. Or, if not the first, then the second or the third. So, in that sense, there's a lot relying on it. People at Sony know that, and we've got literally 200 guys working on this title, day and night, making sure that it's perfect."

This means that Metal Gear Solid 4 sports one of the largest teams ever working in the same location on one game title - Payton clarified that these developers are all working on the PlayStation 3 title within the Kojima Productions division of Konami:

"We have that many in our group right now. We have over 200... we've been just beefing up the team as we got deeper and deeper into development. And then maybe after the game is finished, we'll get a little bit leaner and meaner."

Elsewhere in the interview, which also covers many of the design decisions and artistic sensibilities that are feeding into MGS4 as a title, Payton discusses the DualShock 3 feedback for the title, noting:

"This will be the premiere DualShock 3 supporting game coming out within the next six months. Gran Turismo 5 is, I'm sure, going to be impressive, but we've got some things that I can't talk about that people are going to really dig."

He also added, as part of the detailed Gamasutra interview, which was originally conducted at Tokyo Game Show this year:

"What's funny about the DualShock, though, I realized yesterday when some writers came in and I just placed the controller in their hands and had them play MGS4; for some reason it took them like ten or fifteen minutes to realize that the game had rumble. They would stop and say, "Oh! This -- you've got the DualShock 3!" And it's funny because you don't really realize it unless it's not there."

The full Gamasutra interview with Payton, posted on the site today, also includes a number of other notable revelations on the design decisions and artistic sensibilities that are going into the game.http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=15859

MGS Portable Ops+ gets dated, no MGS4 PSN demo

Do you remember when your fake ID couldn't fool the bouncer, leaving you outside sober, cold, and distanced from the girl you were looking to at least play ball with? That's kind of how we're feeling right now, after learning on the latest Kojima Productions podcast that there are no plans to bring a demo of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to the PlayStation Store prior to launch.

Host Ryan Payton stated: "I can tell you, as of right now, we don't have any plans of uploading this demo on the PlayStation Store." And definitely, he added, no plans of "uploading [on PSN] next week." His statements were echoed by Konami's new flak master, Michael Shelling, adding "[E for All] is going to be your one chance to actually play it prior to it launching next year."

Yeah, while this news is certainly a crushing blow to the Metal Gear Solid fan base (many of which help run Joystiq), there was at least a little positive news: Shelling revealed that Konami has gone gold with Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops+, and are scheduled to release the game on November 13. That's a little antiseptic to the wound, no?

Demos are just teasers.

And you don't need a teaser for MGS4, it's just awesome.
You gotta buy it and play it.
Not download it, play it for 20mins (max) and then wait until release :p

Yea i feel where your coming from. The full MGS experience is better as a finished product rather then in small doses. You get that feeling that the game is that much shorter after you play a demo (sometimes). But I imagine MGS4 will have so many classic moments that you wouldn't mind..but if it doesn't get delayed the wait is relativly bearable.

I'm on the fence on this one. Playing the demos for MGS and MGS2 made me a sneaking beast for those same levels on the final game. In the case of MGS4, I think there shouldn't be one, though, as this title is just too epic to be demoed by the masses.

Well it's definitely got more weight to it than the 6Axis, not sure how it compares to the DS2 though. Keep in mind that they have restraining devices on these controllers too so it's hard to tell what's the controller and what's the extra baggage ;)

LaLi... noted. :)

Jay Gee, it's not that big of a turnout, to be honest, but the MGS4 line is still a pain to deal with. They have 12 kiosks in there and it goes in 30 minute rotations, where you spend the first 10 minutes or so where Ryan introduces the game to you and tells you the new controls & stuff, and then you get 20 minutes or so, and you fill out a survey after that. So it takes awhile to get in there, and I'm not bothering with the Super Smash Bros. Brawl line because Solid Snake isn't playable there, and I refuse to play as another character :-p

Other than those two, Rock Band is the only other game with any kind of a line, and it's usually like 5 people or so... it's especially empty compared to how E3 normally was in that Convention Center...

the boney king of nowhere.

LOL I don't know why but I still have not got used to, when people mix sex and gaming, even if not being serious...I can't tell the truth about not being serious all the time, but I just take it as jokes mostly.

Oh what the heck, MGS4 demo would be pure sex LOLOLOLOL j/k. Seriously though, I feel that a demo is not nesessary this time as some stated, but I would play it anyways if there would be one...

I like demos because it's become MGS custom -- MGS2's demo was an epic happening, and the MGS3 demo in OPM was le sweetness, so I've gotten used to it.

Anyways, this game is hard! At least for the time that I played it, and MGS3 was the same way for me when I first played it, but it's always really hard for me to jump into an MGS demo and not have to come to grips with the sneakiness, especially after my Warhawk escapades over the past month :-p

:-D I'm feelin' the love...

I played through it 2 more times today and had a great chat with Ryan Payton (I also asked a question during GameTrailers.com's interview with him, and that should be going online soon :-D ), and I gleaned a lot of fantastic info from him, and he was really cool! Right now MGS4 is 1080p60, looks amazing (not so much on the TVs we played it on, but most definitely on the TV he demonstrated it on -- like... WOW) HOWEVER -- Ryan said they won't be committing to that just yet since they're still working on optimizing the larger areas to not chug in 1080p, so that still has a possibility of getting cut down. A lot of Sixaxis functions Hideo Kojima showed off at the 20th Anniversary party are removed since they were just a hassle or the Sixaxis's sensors weren't precise enough -- you don't steer MG MkII with it anymore, you don't aim in first-person with it anymore, and I don't think you can "shake off" your camo pattern anymore but maybe I just did it wrong... That said, you can tilt the controller to peek out of dumpsters which is sweet :-D. The new controls are amazing, though a little complex to really take in during a demo -- rest assured that when you pick up the game and play from the beginning, it'll be a breeze and a joy :). Also, Ryan said there are 5 areas in MGS4, which is up from the 4 I thought it was. Middle East and South America (they don't name specific countries) definitely confirmed, and I think Eastern Europe is one, I also think Shadow Moses is in there, but I'm not sure what else -- that's just my personal speculation :-p.

One thing I can't stress the coolness of enough is the GOD DAMN SOUND!!! This game has the absolute meanest sounding bullets in the world, and the "alert" music is the best I've heard in the series personally. Just the whole warzone sounds & explosions and bullet ricochets... it's incredible. Get some badass headphones or a badass speaker set-up for this game if you don't already have one, it'll TOTALLY be worth it :-D

It's hard to just rap off everything because I kinda draw a blank, but if you guys have questions it would help me remember something to say :-p

The game isn't as hard as I made it out to be btw, I did a lot better today! Also, when you play this with a rumble controller, you'll remember what/who makes rumble awesome :-D

I've moved on from hating you, LiquidEagle to living vicariously through you. Tell us more about MGS4.

Apparently you can't side with the PMCs, since they're most definitely the bad guys, but you can help out the militia if you so choose. The first militia clash I stayed out of, but it was cool when I helped them out during the big firefight (the one from Kojima's demonstration), and one of them said, "Oh, you're on our side!?" And it was just cool how seamless the action is, and how the armored car rolled in there without a cinematic or a big introduction, it's just something that happens. The depth-of-field effect in use is really badass too -- when you have your reticle on something in the foreground (like a pillar in front of you), the background is blurry, but when you strafe and start aiming at the building across the street, it kinda comes into focus and looks really sweet. Besides the RPG there is also an anti-tank weapon that I can't remember the name of, but it was sweet how it launched the rocket a little bit above you (about 5 ft above your head) and then flew to the target... Enemies are very wise to the locations they choose in a firefight as well, and I'm sure the demo was on easy, so when that game's on normal or hard they'll be serious threats.

The new codec is very stylish looking, and gives you the option to fast forward, move to the next page, or skip it altogether now, which is pretty cool, and the person on the other end is rendered entirely in 3D and you can do the usual zoom in & what-not. One tidbit that was revealed to me is that Otacon and Sunny co-developed MG MkII, so we know for a fact that Snake & Raiden found Olga's child and it's not something you have to sort out in the game. Otacon's operating out of their APC (The one where Eye Hate You is written on the side I think, not sure though), and can hold several weapons inside MkII, among other things (Solid Eye, one badass pistol with a suppressor, a tranq pistol, and like 1 or two other goodies)

Ryan told me that the TGS demo of it started the player out with 30 rations as opposed to the 10 the US players got, I asked him if the European players will get 2 (or be in the negatives! :-p). The interview he did with GameTrailers is going to be really cool, very informative at points and also pretty repetitive regarding PS3/360 & what-not. You can really tell that he's sick of that shit  I asked a question on there and it should be in the video...

Well the video's up here now:

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/26742.html

And they didn't put my question in!!! I'm the guy chewing gum in the bottom left

I asked Ryan about the titles since little's been released since they announced Logan would be doing it, and whether we'll get more info on it, and he said Ken Imaizumi (another producer on MGS4) is flying into LA next week to work with them on it, and Ryan really talked it up as being something special and completely unique -- he even said Kojima says he's more excited about the titles than he is about pretty much any other game coming out!!!

Also, in the cinema where Snake first encounters MG MkII, when Otacon says it's a Metal Gear, "just like Rex," you have the option to hit X during that moment, and if you do, it shows quick flashbacks to MG Rex, and I'm sure there will be some cool stuff with that and more interactivity as always :-D

Ryan also talked in the interview (it was cut out) about boss battles and how they're going to have 2 stages of sorts, and also that they're taking them very seriously since they need to live up to the standard MGS3 set for boss battles.

MGS4 will most definitely be the finest game ever made :-D

Does anybody have questions? It's much easier for me to recollect by answering questions rather than spout everything I can possibly remember

We play a new, never-before-seen demo of MGS4 on the show floor of E for All.

New details in a nutshell:

Pausing the game brings up the minimap with a full-fledged waypoint system. The threat ring that surrounds Snake replaces the radar system from previous games, and increases in wavelength when a threat is nearby. Enemy APC vehicles are equipped with a 360-degree security camera. Smokes return in the inventory!
Here at E for All, attendees are playing a new demo of Metal Gear Solid 4, different from what was played at Tokyo Game Show. The English voice overs are in place, and the dialogue is phenomenal, as always. The demo begins in a grimy back alley of the middle-eastern setting we've all seen from the trailers. Snake receives a call on his codec from Otacon, which are rendered entirely in 3D now, informing him of the PMC vs. local militia situation. It's extremely hostile at the moment and Snake is advised to avoid any contact.

http://www.gamepro.com/sony/ps3/games/previews/images/142028-1.jpg

This is where it all goes down.
The first thing I noticed was how different the game feels since the controls have been "Westernized." The camera is now detached from the standard isometric view and can be moved around freely with the right-analog stick. The triangle button attaches Snake to nearby walls, and the X button is used to crouch or hold to go prone. Using Snake's weapon feels more like Resident Evil 4, where holding L1 raises the gun and R1 is used to fire. When the gun is raised, the triangle button takes you into first-person, or aim-down-sights, mode.

Now let's back to the demo. I walk out into the streets where a relatively small gunfight is taking place between the PMC soldiers and the local militia. Otacon calls again and reminds me not to engage. Ok, so what do I do? I call up the minimap which reveals many alternate routes through the nearby dilapidated buildings and alley ways. As I crawl through a collapsed doorway, a fight breaks out in front of me. A local militia soldier falls to the ground crying, "Please don't kill me... don't shoot!" The PMC soldier standing over him fills his chest with bullets.

When the PMC soldier turns away I switch to Snake's new Stun Knife for close-quarters combat. It's time to take this ruthless killer out. I approach quietly from behind. An indicator appears informing me that I am now close enough to grab the enemy. With the soldier in my grips, I now have a few different options. I can kill him with a kick stab to the jugular or I can wrestle him to the ground for a choke hold.

The next area opens up a bit, and it's difficult to avoid being seen. So, if I'm going to be seen, why not make a little ruckus? With the barrel equipped I roll down the street knocking over three enemies before Snake throws the barrel off and vomits in the middle of the road. Now I'm really in trouble. There's about five or more soldiers alerted to my position.

My 15 minutes with MGS4 are coming close to an end, but not before I run into an open plaza filled with broken statues. The soldiers are hot on my ass and closing in fast. I jump onto a platform with two statues and assume the modern-art position. Snake grabs the crotch of the nearest statue, active camo kicks in, and the soldiers pass by unaware that I'm not really a stone cutout.http://www.gamepro.com/sony/ps3/games/previews/142028.shtml

"we're leveraging the power of the cell to offload many separate tasks at simultaneously." "The cell is very powerfull, we'll use one SPU for physics and another for lighting -BLAH BLAH BLAH. They never give any deep insight into how they achieve what they achieve, except in a few cases of first party devs who share workshop information with other developers.

That information doesn't do you any service, or any of us, and even if it did they wouldn't tell us because development studios hold that information close to their chest to protect their interests, it's not like the reps there are going to be able to rattle off the intricacies of their programming and art pipelines in a short interview period.

The threat ring works really well, and it's most definitely worth using (especially since it's Snake's intuition/senses and doesn't get scrambled during alert like Soliton would.

Also noteworthy (if you haven't noticed yet) is that Otacon will call you and talk to you while you're playing now, so not every since codec call pulls you from the game.

You are right you did nothing wrong in which I agree.

Although the constant state of RSX this Cell that yadda yadda yadda, is a bit annoying to many of the members and while I can relate to your situation I cant completely blame them.

If this is not the typical discussion of the thread then simply let it go. For instance I usually dont follow the games that arent due for release soon (outside of their initial announcement of course), you may want to try this as it helps devote more time current games in which we may have more knowledge on.

Now I cant help but feel someone irrationally taking offense to a simple question or something of the like is called for either. Instead of coming unhinged answer the question or leave it be. Those calling attention to the ordeal in an nonsensical way arent helping the matter in the least.

Sorry I missed this post from earlier, but anyways:
Square turns auto-aim on & off -- Auto Aim on makes it MGS3-style aiming where you hold L1 to point your gun at them and you move around them from there, and a little circular target appears on whom your target would be if you press L1 to lock-on. Obviously this is less precise but easier on the whole. Also, while prone, you hit square to play dead and you also activate octo-camo.
Triangle is the ever-so-versatile action button -- use it to flatten against walls, pick up corpses, get in dumpsters, and so on. I think it's also used to pat down soldiers when you're holding them hostage.
O is... I dunno -- never used that button! You can probably use this to knock on walls as usual, but you don't want to attract too much attention here, trust me!
X is still standard issue -- tap it to go into crouch, hold to go prone, tap while running to do a roll, nothing radical there.
The D-pad is no longer used for stalking like it was in MGS3 -- it's all in the analog stick and you just need to move slower by pushing less on the stick, and staying in crouched position helps too. The only use I found for the d-pad was zooming in & out while using Solid Eye and zooming in during cutscenes (pressure sensitive, of course)
Left Analog stick is movement -- Duh. The only thing really worth bringing up here is that while prone, pushing the left stick ever so slightly makes Snake do his "worm" crawl where he slowly moves while prone and it doesn't really lower his camo index at all from what I saw.
Right analog stick is camera -- no brainer there...
L1 activates aiming -- if you have auto aim on, Snake points his gun at the target nearest you/in your line of sight, and if auto aim is off it goes to the over-the-shoulder aiming system which is sweet. While holding L1 to aim, clicking R3 changes which shoulder you're viewing over, R1 fires, and you press Triangle to go into first-person view and you can strafe & what-not from there.
R1 fires -- ...Only when you're using L1 to aim though. If you have your knife equipped, or another CQC compatible weapon (like the pistol), pressing R1 WITHOUT holding L1 initiates a grab and puts them in a hold, and while holding them you press Triangle to slit their throats.
L2 & R2 are still normal -- Inventory of items/weapons as always :)

Octo-camo is pretty much automatic when you flatten against a wall or go prone, and the camo index is in the top right... I can't think of anything else, but there are some things I didn't figure out in the demo, such as how to put hostages you're holding into one of those Judo choke-holds, how to knock a guard out by crushing his balls (really wanted to do that ), and how to roll around while prone and throw grenades over my head & stuff Kojima showed off. Don't take that as if this game is hard to come to grips with though -- it's very intuitive, and jumping into a demo on a showfloor on somebody else's rig is never the best way to learn controls & how to play, eh?

Any other questions? :) I imagine the Gametrailers footage answers a lot, but I know I would want info if I didn't get a chance to see it in person so I'm trying to help out :)

Liquid Eagle,

Did you ask him if the game was currently utilizing any AA? Did you ask him at all about the type of rendering system they are using or anything about the graphical pipeline?

I didn't have to ask if the game was using any AA -- it's plain as day! I didn't ask at all about the rendering system for many reasons:
1) I wouldn't understand it -- I'm no techie, and though I can pick up some of the lingo and roll with a conversation, it wouldn't really affect how I view this game at all. Do you really think you would gain a whole lot from it besides maybe a better night's sleep? Like, honestly?
2) Ryan wouldn't know -- he's a producer, not a programmer of any kind.
3) I don't care -- it looks great and KojiPro uses a lot of makeshift/proprietary technology that really isn't the norm, and they're all the more brilliant for it.

If you are really that interested, it's long past that point in this game's development to start digging into technology & what-not, since that's mainly what they talk about when they don't have gameplay/story to speak of, your best bet is to wait for some kind of a "Document" to come out much like it did for MGS2, and that had some cool info about their AI routine programming & what-not. I doubt they'll do it for 4, but that's your best bet. Honestly though, it doesn't matter and I really don't think you'd benefit from hearing about it at this point dude.

I do wish they had a demo coming out for this game because I recall I played the MGS3 demo like mad. I couldn't believe that Payton is actually 'boasting', I use that term loosely, about MGS4. I didn't see him as that kind of guy. I would expect that out of Jaffe, Rein or the guy from Ninja Gaiden.

But I'm proud of him, why can't he make claims like this? Why can't he flaunt this FACT?

Those 4 gameplay vids were neato, I just wished the dude playing would have kept going through that first codec with Otacon.

Oh yeah, I also forgot to say that I can't stand the look of the fire. That is my beef with this game. I've seen it in a few previous vids and now this one and I'm getting worried.

Effects are the last thing developers finish. Expect to see the final ones 1-2 months before release.

Remember Uncharted, the fire and explosion effects looked like crap until just a few weeks ago.

Yeah I'm sold, just like every other Metal Gear before it. Also it seems from looking at the vids the enemy characters movements seem to be a little smoother, better animated. or that could be just me. they just don't look so rigid.

I did not know that they are the last thing to finish. And I have yet to check out Uncharted so I cannot comment.

But that is GREAT news! And you'd think that with 200 developers working on the game, how much is left and how much is polish and shine?

its the only thing i wish they would change. The old ring looked better and it wasnt steady like the new one, the new one just has a bump where danger is and thats it, the bump doesnt flicker much (if at all) and the ring is just...there.

With the old one, it would slightly flicker and move even if there was no danger, and when there was danger it would spike in that direction (like the new one does too) but it wouldnt be a steady spike it would still fluctuate slightly.

western version to be more difficult:

While E For All may have been sparsely attended, we did manage to catch up with a few notables while we dodged tumbleweeds and worked our way through the cavernous South Hall. Konami's booth with its Metal Gear Solid 4 demo easily had the longest line, which kept some of the attendees behind barbed wire fences until they were treated to a lucky 15 minutes of glory.

So, we decided to sit down with one of the men behind the game. Namely, Konami's Ryan Payton, who has the enviable position of being one of the Assistant Producers on MGS4. He is also one of the extremely few Westerners working on this title. Mind you, he is fluent in Japanese and is currently living over there, which certainly makes things a bit easier. Check out our interview with him about the game after the break.

Gallery: E for All 2007

So, have you guys felt the pressure of releasing basically the first "system seller" for the PlayStation 3?

Absolutely. You know, we've felt that from day one since we first announced the game and showed it off at TGS 2005. There's a lot of pressure to succeed. If this game is a lemon, it will not only be a problem for Konami, but it will be a problem for Sony, and Japanese gaming as a whole. With that said, I'm not worried, at all. Obviously, working on the game every day allows me a little bit more perspective on how the game is turning out. I'm very bullish on what we're going to be able to accomplish with the title. It already feels good, and we're here at E For All with a demo that is pretty "solid." Solid, in quotes by the way (zing!). Although the game we have running at the studio is very actually quite different. The gameplay is different, the menus look different ... so we're still moving ahead and moving beyond this demo. If you think this is solid, this is really only an 80% glimpse into the game.

Has the ending for the game been completed, and as a fan of the series and an employee, are you satisfied?

Oh absolutely. I mean, what can I say about the ending ... it's the final chapter of Solid Snake, no joke about it. There's no smoke and mirrors, no jack-in-the-box trick, this is the final chapter in his life, and in his story. With that said, we give him proper homage at the ending. It's epic and it's long. It will take two days after the game is released for people to start talking about the ending, because it will take awhile for people to get through it, but I think that's going to be one of the biggest topics. We have a couple of cool things in the game that will hit the blogs and the message boards, and people will be saying "Can you believe this!?" and I think that the ending will be one of those kinds of things as well. It will be talked about for a long time.

So, when a hardcore gamer buys this game, goes home, takes it out of the shrinkwrap and puts it in, how long will it take them to run through the whole game?

That's tough. We haven't been able to gauge it yet because we're still implementing the A.I., tweaking the stages and all that. The stages are there, but as far as the scripting of the enemies and all that, it hasn't been completed yet, so I can't really say. There are also other gameplay modes that aren't just stealth/action. We're pulling from other genres as well, and those bits are like 20 to 30 minutes long. Those haven't been completed yet, they'll probably be completed at the end of the game. Once all those pieces are in place, I think it'll be longer than Snake Eater but I can't say for sure right now (pauses) ... yeah, it's gotta be longer than Snake Eater.

Can you tell us what those other gameplay modes are? Do you mean some vehicle-based stuff?

I wish I could say, but I'd be killed. Plus I kind of want it to be a surprise. I don't think we'll even be talking about it until like a week before launch, and we'll have it on the back of the box so people can go "Oh wait, I can do this?! It's not just shooting people?"

In regards to the control scheme for the game, there are two, right? One for more traditional Western gamers, and one that is aimed at Japanese gamers. When did you guys know that was going to be the case? When was that decision made?

About a week ago! Mr. Kojima came to me and said, "Ryan, you're in charge of European and American versions of the game, and that not only means on the production level, but from a gameplay standpoint as well. Balance, default control scheme, difficulty ... all of those things are going to be tweaked with the Western gamer in mind."

It's going to be harder than the Japanese version, I can say that right now. That over the shoulder view is going to be, I hope, the focal point. I want to make that the default setting, and then people can turn on auto-aim later if they want to. I think that auto-aim takes away from the intimacy of the battle. The reason we put that in there was because at TGS I noticed that when Japanese gamers would play, they would pick up the PS3 controller, and their right thumb would never go even go close to the right stick. They would never manipulate the camera. It's still something that they need to learn about this full 3D camera system. Games like Onimusha and Resident Evil have always kind of held their hands through games with fixed cameras and things like that.

This really is the next step. Final Fantasy XII experimented with it too, and I think that this is where the industry is going, but we also need to be conscientious of the Japanese gamers that maybe have played FFXII or Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. This really is where the industry is moving, there's a reason for having that right analog stick on the PS3 controller.

Speaking about the controller itself, how long ago did you learn the Dual Shock was heading back to the PS3?

Totally last minute. I think it was a week and a half or two weeks before TGS. We finally got word and we got the drivers so that we could start implementing it back into the game. We know that Sony was working really hard to get that back in the system, and back into the controls. We went into development thinking that it wasn't going to have rumble, and it's been a nice surprise.

Rumble has been so unique to the whole Metal Gear series. Do you think it would have suffered if it hadn't been in?

A little bit, yeah. I mean, it does bring more to the game, and you miss it when you don't have it. There's also been some parts of the game that we've been able to kind of expand upon because of rumble. Again, I don't want to ruin the surprise but ... I just hope that everyone who picks up the game also has a Dual Shock controller, because it's going to be a lot of fun. And it's not going to just be shaking when you're shooting.

In the demo, the characters name bar says "Old Snake", now are we going to be playing a younger Snake during some parts of the game?

All I can say is that it's more of a joke, really. It's a Hideo Kojima joke; this is Solid Snake, but he's old. It's part of the charm of Metal Gear, I think in a way.

Was the Threat Ring in the demo at TGS?

It was, although we've tweaked it for E For All and made it more visible. That's something that I think is a really important part of MGS4. Getting rid of the radar and adding that milky-white ring to give you really a 360 perspective on where every enemy is coming from. That's something that I'm surprised other games haven't implemented up to this point.

In other way, if you're going to go around a corner, you'd have to sort of cheat by using the right stick to adjust your view. But if you crouch down and let the Threat Ring appear and you notice no bumps in that direction, then you know you're cool and you can head out.

Konami is releasing Metal Gear Solid: Online, and Metal Gear Solid 4 as two separate games, are there any plans to release them as a bundle?

I don't know what the current plan for North America is, I think the North American office is still figuring that out. But as far as Japan is concerned, we'll have a starter pack of MGO included with MGS4 for free. That's part of the pressure we've been under ... to not only provide a full-scale single player mode, but to include a multiplayer mode as well. I don't know the plans for the U.S. release yet. But, as of right now we want to make sure that starter pack is in the U.S. version as well.

One thing is for sure, we're not going to gouge customers. People are not going to pay like two $60 packaging prices, it's not going to be like $120 for both. We want to give people a taste of MGO with MGS4 because we know that people are excited about the story mode, but are still kind of on the fence about MGO. The online team is working really hard to make it a really cool and unique experience. It's not just MGS4 with other humans in it that you can shoot. In that sense, we're pretty excited about blowing away people's expectations. I think that if people buy MGS4 and try out MGO, they're going to want to continue that experience.

Konami recently said that there would be no demo for MGS4. Why is that? The demo is really the hit of E For All, and it's the longest line at the show, so why did you make that decision?

As of right now, there are no plans for a demo. Could that change in the future? Maybe. We made this demo for E For All really, to be completely honest. We wanted people to come out to the show and check it out. We were excited by the idea of this consumer-based version of E3. Also, we don't want to give people a taste or a sample of a game that's only 80% complete. That section in the single-player mode that we're pulling from isn't even complete in our version yet. This isn't a beta test, and I talked with Hideo about this last week, but this isn't the version that we want people to play with in their own homes and break, because the A.I is not done yet. We want to make it perfect, and we don't feel like this is perfect yet.

Last question, which we're sure you can guess what it is ...

When is the Xbox 360 version coming out? *Laughter* No, it's PlayStation 3 exclusive, that's all I can say.

Well, how are you handling the speculation at this point? There's been a lot of discussion about MGS4 appearing on the Xbox 360.

We like the console, it's fun and there are a lot of great titles for it. But, we're committed to the PS3. We want the PS3 to be successful, and we've had a great history with the PlayStation. So it's a PS3 exclusive title, now having said that ... questions like this don't bother me. The questions that bother me are ones like, "Are you worried that the Xbox 360 is stealing exclusives from the PS3" or whatever. I think that the industry really needs to grow up and get away from this Xbox vs. PlayStation mentality.

I really want to get my point across that the industry is mature enough so that we can get past this. There is space for three consoles, as Nintendo has proven. There are more important things in life than the Xbox 360 or the PS3 getting exclusive titles from one another. Life goes on. But, with that said ... if you want to play MGS4 next year, you're going to need a PlayStation 3. So that's the way it works ... is it something to cry about? No.

So what's next for you? When do you head back to Japan?

I have about another week of production work here in Los Angeles, we're working with a studio who is producing the opening movie for the game. We're doing it with a very untraditional studio here in LA. I think that the opening movie and the ending of the game are going to be the two talks of the town. The opening movie is something that has never been attempted, and will never be attempted again. It's something that could only come out of Hideo's mind.

Now we're really buckling down and focusing on the game. This really is the last trade show for us. We have to finish the game, so we're going into lockdown/blackout mode.

Thanks for sitting down with us, we really appreciate the time.

No problem! It's always great to sit down with people who enjoy the series. Thanks very much.

Yeah...

Why does there have to be a Console War anyway? Our companies used to be such good friends...

Thought that Johnny Sasaki quote modification would be fitting for this thread :-p (even though it's more fitting for Sony/Nintendo hehe)

One fuels the other. Both to blame, one has more power to be impartial and yet chooses not to.

Makes me curious as to exactly how long that last 20% will take them to pull off. Them saying this is the last trade show indicates that they plan on working on it during E3 rather than showing a demo, however it could also mean they may be wrapped up by then... though I doubt it. The only thing that supports that claim is the fact that they already have a demo ready for the show, though they probably would want to show a new level or something if they were to do e3, so I don't know. They did originally plan on releasing this year, so the delay may not be quite as long as some think... I don't know what to think really.

*sits and twiddles thumbs some more while waiting for this game*

Info on MGS4 opening movie:

Ryan: I'm in charge of the movie, which we're working on with Logan, which is one of the top design companies in the world. They invented the whole iPod silhouette ad campaign. Not just print, but the TV ads and the billboards. They design all those and they're a really hot design company. They're designing and producing our opening movie which is something that's never been attempted before in games. It's going to be the talk of the town when the game comes out.

Kotaku: What are they doing with it that's going to be so dramatic?

Ryan: It's not just something you sit there and watch, hit the start button and then play the game. There's actually no gameplay involved. It's somewhere in the middle of those two. It's something that nobody has ever attempted before in games. It's a different take on video games.

This is something that my boss, Kenichiro Imaizumi, the head producer on the title, something that he's really talented at, combining two different forces that you would think wouldn't make sense. It's Metal Gear, a military game, combined with Logan, which is really great with cutting edge pop culture advertising. Melding those two together, we've created something that's really cool. They've also designed our logo which is a pretty big departure from our previous logo which have all been just Helvetica, so this is something that's really encouraging for us. Next week we'll be doing production work on it in Hollywood. It's a massive project. I can't give out number figures, but I know of some games that have as big a budget as we have on just this opening movie.

Mainly because I think I could take y'all on. I'm pretty sure Curry would be the first to attack, but since he's only like 12 years old and 4 feet tall, and not a very good gamer, he wouldn't stand a chance. And so on...

Unless...
