I doubt it because Ryan said that they didn't want to take resources away from the actual game. It's most likely a video of the level they played.

Ryan said (GAF) they're wasn't going to be a demo. They want to spend all their time on the final game, so I really doubt that a demo will come. A 'final' trailer or so would be great though.

I wouldn't.
When I get the full game I don't want to go "Oh, bah. This is the bit I done in the demo."
In a game like MGS4, it matters to me.

well if MGS2 demo is anything to go by, it won't really detract from the real game. Wasn't much of a spoiler in it so hopefully this would be the same.
The MGS3 demo was the same way, it didn't give away story but let you play through the first little bit. I just want to get the controls down so that when the game does launch I can be efficient and not have that learning curve.
Kojima is not that stupid to let us know what is going on from the demo.
But see the thing is, why aren't they releasing it? It's not that they have to prepare a demo, it's already been made! Just throw that thing up on the PSN and we'll rock it.

Despite Ryan Payton already stating that Kojima Productions have no plans to release a demo of Metal Gear Solid 4 onto the Playstation network, Playstation World Magazine are reporting that a demo will indeed be available in Febuary. This is a UK magazine so the Feb date is most likely for the European Playstation Store.
>> Playstation World Scan
Thanks to TomEmo12 of Gametrailers for posting the scan.
Update:
I e-mailed the editor of PSW and asked him to confirm that this is true, and he replied that a Konami Rep confirmed that the build they played will be on PSN sometime in relation to the games release. If the game stays on track as Konami has said so far then it should arrive around Feb as the magazine states.
Original Reply:
"Hi,
At the time of writing the article a Konami rep told us a demo, the demo we played in our office for the magazine article, would be on the PSN Store. It's finished, we played it, so something should be appearing this month. It could all depend on the game's final on sale date, if it has moved to May then a demo could appear later, possibly February.
Keep checking the mag, or our website www.computerandvideogames.com.
Cheers,
Ian"
Now let's hope for Konami to say something to make it official.http://metalgearsolid4.net/2008/01/20/metal-gear-solid-4-demo-coming-to-the-playstation-network-next-month.html

I say wait until after the little tax break. Ppl who get a little something can buy the game, then put the rest in the bank.
Well I don't think they are ahead of schedule since the intro seems like it isn't finished yet (according to podcast 74 I believe), and besides March is not within that Q2 range.

According to Payton, the game is essentially complete. They're in the bug fixing/polishing state now, which with Kojima, could be a several month process in itself.

I'm sure putting a Kojima level of polish to the game will take debugging at least 2 or 3 months. It was like, 3 or 4 play throughs of MGS3 before I started seeing glitches in the enemy A.I., with little shit that would slip through quality control.

I was hoping they would have an L1 aiming system similar to Uncharted where you L1-aim at the direction of where your camera is pointing so you're always aiming at what you're looking at, and you can detach character movement/direction character is facing from camera direction, that would make boss fights more manageable because you can always be looking at a boss or enemies even when you're running away but you also have the choice of looking in the same direction of where you're heading.
Update:
Ryan Payton, the man in charge of localizing the heavily anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4 for us English speaking audiences, has said time after time that Kojima Productions will not release a playable demo of MGS4. Payton insists that the time required to release a demo would be time away from completing the full game. That doesn’t stop fans from praying their will be one.
For a moment, it looked as if the millions of prayers had been answered. In the current issue of the UK gaming magazine Playstation World, they get some hands on time with a MGS4 demo. At the end of their preview, they say “Want more MGS4? Well, you’ll get it very soon. The stage played here will be out on the PSN store in the next month“. PS3 forums across the web have been on fire lately after the editor of PSW, Ian Dean, confirmed to MetalGearSolid4.net that this was indeed not a typo, and that the demo was slated to appear on the Playstation Network in February.
However, earlier today, MaxConsole contacted Konami and spoke with their public relations rep. They maintained that “We do not comment on speculation, I am afraid”, indicating that PSW’s confirmation was nothing more then speculation.
If you like to play the word twisting game, at least they didn’t specifically say there was no demo… Nonetheless, it looks like we are still in the dark on the issue. MGS fans, keep praying!http://exgn.wordpress.com/2008/01/22/mgs4-demo-debunked-again-well-sorta/
As much as I would love a demo, there are sooo many great games coming in the next months that will make time fly by. So it's not crucial that I get a demo but still, I really really want one.
Sephiroth_VII
01-22-2008, 05:37 PM
Untill Ryan or Kojima comes out and says "no," I'll presume they changed their mind on the issue since the last time Ryan commented on it.
Of course Random PR Representative isn't going to comeout and confirm a demo without the blessing of the higher-ups.

MGS4 has something very similar, I don't remember how it feels in comparison to Uncharted though.

what do you expect in a world of FPS... people are getting too impatient to actually play games these days, they just want to laugh out loud at a headshot and pretend they're real men when they do it (SAD!)

Why is it that every time I see an MGS4 gameplay video I feel like breaking something?
"What's over there? Oh, it must be my imagination." "Who's that!?" "It's the enemy!"
Now why do the reactions of the enemies mirror that of those I saw in a PS2 game? They appear to walk, talk, and do the same things. They even animate the same. Even Snake's animations don't seem anything impressive. His crawl, walk, run, crouch walk... they all look almost second rate....
Is simply adding a ragdoll to the death animations super impressive? Looks rather ugly in my opinion except for in very few choice gifs we've seen.
'More wide open spaces, larger areas...'
Why does it simply look like MGS3 but with a 'wider' space? Is that supposed to be impressive? Is wider and more open and easier to run around like a headless chicken 'better?'
'More complicated environments...'
Really? I didn't noticed anything very complicated. I saw some stairs, some windows....
The whole schematic of everything I see of this game seems wrong. The whole graphics seem kind of unimpressive and in terms of art and atmosphere pretty far from their target; what happened to the crispness and dust and debris filling the view? Why wide? Why is wide so much better? Is it just because we're in third person view now? Why is the third person view so much better? I'm still not convinced that the third person view was the better move for Metal Gear.
Is more open for Metal Gear the better Metal Gear? Did Kojima really believe third person was the better way for the MGS series? Was Kojima convinced that no more could be done from a neo-isometric view point and that he achieved everything that could be done from that angle? Is MGS just magically so much better now because you can strafe sideways in a wide open street?
If he did think that, I think he may have made a big, big mistake. This third person stuff from here looks worse-than-cookie-cutter with a MGS overcoat.
Seriously, is this going to be a crappy version of Spinter Cell starring Solid Snake?
Has third person been added in MGS to sedate the ones who probably are least interested in MGS? To quiet down the people who don't even care for it's what it does or tries to achieve?
I just think something is really, really wrong and I'm praying it's just this first level fooling the crap out of me.
At least this is just the first level it seems like, and I'm still going to buy it. But it better not be just 'this.' When has it been? I don't know, but I'm still worried as hell.

There is so much to this game, and there is so much in the demo that when you play it, you'll know it's the real deal. I can understand your frustrations when you've only seen the same stupid area for the past year now (if not more), and the people playing it are morons, and this game gets trashed purely because of bias and rampant stupidity in the online gaming community, but when you hold this game in your hands -- trust me -- it will go way beyond anything you've ever expected from a video game :)

I hope you guys aren't annoyed that I have some conflict with the game, it's just my opinion.
I'm not sure how I was negative? I just don't like it in the way I see it.
If you are annoyed at the way I lambasted cliffbo I'd be fine with that though.
^And I'm not white lol. I take that as offense :P
What is so wrong with my post about MGS? It's just.. what I thought, how should that impact your thoughts on the game or anger anyone else in anyway???
I'm not sure how my post was angry? I was just asking a lot of questions, I just don't like it. Why is that a bother and hostile to everyone? I didn't mean it to be.
I don't want to say it... but I think you guys are thinking it's hostile simply because it was in different opinion of that of the way MGS4 is...
I'm trying to kind of gather why my post was responded to in such a way.... The only thing I wrote in a hostile manner was to cliffbo, but that doesn't seem to be the focus of why everyone is questioning my post....
At least not all of you responded like I was a crazy man lol. Is it really that offensive that I don't really like what's going on with MGS4 from what I've seen so far? That really shouldn't be such a problem....
@Coded-Dude - I don't know how to be uber specific and I don't think I could be in words to describe all the things I don't like..
But I look at the gameplay and what I personally see is a lot of average, impersonal action gameplay.
What I would've dreamed up for MGS4 would be is something very close-up, Snake's body focused in a far smaller scale, a lot more human and personal, one on one encounters with enemies and messing with their minds and stuff.
That's what I 'wanted' I guess, I dunno.
And Liquid :P
Ya man, I'm still waiting on that of course like everyone else here, and I'm hoping you'll be right and it's the real deal. :)

but why Curry, your post is far more aggressive and negative than anything that i posted. all i pointed out is that those that have been demoing it have obviosly got the wrong mentality for this game.

Cliffbo, I'd be very amazed if you had the capacity to point out anything hostile in my post except the last part towards... yourself.
If your definition of hostile is 'not liking parts of MGS4' and asking some arbitrary questions, then yes... my post was obscenely hostile and I am a terrible person for saying anything in conflict with MGS4's awesomeness.

Back on topic... this video that is
First, I'd like to point out, the dude who played it, was indeed not much of an MGS gamer. He killed on purpose, which is not the sense of this game (at least, I think it is not^^). He had some serious troubles with the controls which made everything quite jerky and "unwatchable".
What I found a bit sad/bad is, that there's no self shadowing at all in this game. It makes it look less good. The cutscene with MG MKII showed this to great detail. Snake "stood out" of the environment somehow. At least the touched up the motion capture in terms of face movement and lipsyncing. Still a bit stiff, but much better than before.
I don't really know what you mean. Explain what I should be looking at and when during the Mk II.

When the MKII cutscene starts, I felt that Snake "stood out" of the environment, as if he was plastered onto it (he was less dark than the rest of the room). It's hard to describe, but old games often had this, if the lighting system between the environment and characters was disconnected.
Maybe it's just me (as always^^) or this gets remedied later on, but I thought this looked quite bad (but the rest was rather nice^^ Gotta love Snake, that he finally learned how to bend over^^)

Segitz, that is what I thought you meant.

I'm too lazy to get back to the previous page where someone asked if those were new and they're not. They were taken from the latest trailer and something terrible happened to them making them take on greenish/filtered look.

Those screens look sexay lol. Nevermind the green filter...lord knows MGS2 had an overall bluish tint to it. And it worked perfectly for that atmosphere.
Another boring podcast...
with the exception that the BATB unit will be getting some background information throughout the game. The ratio of background information is said to be more than MGS3's bosses but less than MGS2. Ryan also said that it is not really like straight up Crying Wolf telling you her story but like in codecs, cutscenes and stuff other people say.

Definitely a good guess, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like NYC -- who knows what that city's like after Arsenal Gear crashing into it, not to mention the US probably doesn't have the military clout it formerly had with PMCs on the rise. Whatever the 5th location is, I'm sure it'll be special (as if Shadow Moses wouldn't/won't be special enough :-D)

Movie Preview: Metal Gear Solid (2009/10)
By Richard Mooney
Snake?..Snake, come in! Snaaaaaake!
Metal Gear Solid
The Metal Gear Solid (MGS) series has a cult status amongst gamers that few videogames have achieved.
Created by Japanese games guru Hideo Kojima back in 1987 on the NES(Nintendo Entertainment System) as Metal Gear, the series started off as an 8-bit stealth game and has evolved into one of the most pioneering videogames on the planet.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is scheduled for a release this year on the PS3 and looks set to be one of the most amazing gaming experiences ever created.
Back in May 2006 Hideo Kojima announced that an film adaptation of MGS was in development.
Story continues Continue story
ADVERTISEMENT
About a year later in February 2007 it was announced that Sony Pictures bought the rights to the movie and their vice chairman, Yair Landau, said that the biggest challenge for the studio would be translating the epic scale of the MGS series to the silver screen.
Hideo Kojima said in late 2004 that in terms of story, a movie version of MGS must stand on its own and have its own story away from the video games.
It’s no secret that the MGS storylines are some of the most complex and intriguing in videogame history. The stories centre around Solid Snake, a former soldier of the Elite US special Ops team, Foxhound and his battles against the different incarnations of ‘Metal Gear’.
A ‘Metal Gear’ is bi-pedal walking tank with the ability to launch nuclear warheads. The ‘Metal Gears’ usually fall into the hands of terrorists and it is from here the storylines kick off.
Despite sounding clichéd the storylines do delve far deeper than you would think for a video game. They explore the nature of war, several philosophical themes, censorship and genetic engineering amongst other things.
If the movie is to be anything like the videogame, it will probably follow the same story structure. This could lead to several large scale military battles and a climactic skirmish between Snake and the ‘Metal Gear’. The Metal Gear is essentially a giant robot and would most likely be recreated using CGI in a fashion similar to 2007’s Transformers.
In terms of casting nothing has been set in stone, but Batman actor Christian Bale was widely thought to be playing Solid Snake. These rumours as of yet, have not been confirmed.
David Hayter, the voice actor of Solid Snake in MGS and the screenplay writer of the first two X-Men films, penned a treatment for the movie that was described as a digital Apocalypse Now. However Sony Pictures snubbed this and, as of yet, there is no actual writer attached to the project.
Videogame movies do not have a pretty past. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Bros, the Resident Evil franchise are all but to name a few of the flops. Fans have come to cringe at their naff one-liners and badly put together production sets. Let’s hope that whatever happens with the intended MGS movie that its blockbuster potential is realised and Uwe Boll doesn’t get his hands on it.

With Christopher Nolan directing, Christian Bale starring, and music by Harry Gregson-Williams (or Michael Giacchino), this movie would be destined for absolute greatness.
It kinda sucks now that I think of it, but Heath Ledger would have made a great Liquid/Master Miller too IMO.
I wouldnt call RE movies a flop, not a LOTR success but dfntly not a flop.

and as far as nolan for director? I'd say no to that aswell seeming as he's not much of a veteran director and no offence but the few films he's made arent all that amazing.to be honest id rather none other than kojima to direct. seriously i dont want spielberg i dont want vebeski or Doug Liman. because i just dont trust anyone but Kojima with making a movie about my all time favourite game series.

Viggo would definitely be a good Snake, and he's a great actor (not as versatile/dedicated as Bale IMO, have you seen the Machinist, American Psycho, and 3:10 to Yuma?), but Kojima also qualified his pick of Mortensen by saying he's a little too old for the role now (something along those lines, that isn't verbatim). btw, who's "Kolima?" :-p

Not a Nolan fan? You have my condolences :-p I think Nolan has more than proven himself as a fantastically solid director and writer, especially with complex plots that skip around through points in time (Memento, The Prestige, Batman Begins), pretty much all of his films handle backstory and making things relevant with the flow of a story. Also, adaptation-wise, Nolan has truly brought Batman to his prime... as my brother says, "He just gets it." He's got a great ear/eye for how things are to play out and how to bring somebody as iconic as Batman to the movie screen and really make it work. On top of that (this is sounding more and more like a love-letter to Christopher Nolan ), all of Nolan's films have impeccable casting. Namely Christian Bale & Michael Caine :-p
Anyways, talking other directors, I definitely can't see Gore Verbinski doing this, and Doug Liman may do a good job, Spielberg would do a good job just because he's really really good, but it wouldn't have that MGS touch. I think Michael Mann, JJ Abrams, Paul Greengrass, or James Cameron would be my next most-wanted.
And of course, this movie must have a huge budget and be taken very seriously by Kojima, Sony Pictures, the cast/crew, and anybody involved in making it. This can't just be another videogame to movie adaptation, not in the least, they have to pull out all the stops, because that's how Kojima makes his games.

Depends on which snake we want to display really...
If they want Old Snake in the movie, they missed Sean Connery (he did a great job as special op in "The Rock").
Imho, Clive Owen (Sin City) would make a good young Ocelot. A bit different, than the one portrait in MGS3, but I think, he could pull it off. Tom Jane (The Punisher) could also fit in there somehow...
Christian Bale as Snake is... I don't know, I can't befriend myself with this idea. His portrayal of Batman, Cleric and Machinist were all great, but Snake is just completely different.
As director... This is a HARD nut. Michael Bay with MUCH less bang. Something along when he did Bad Boys and The Rock (two of my alltime favourites). Hopefully one, who doesn't abuse CGI to the max (I HATE THAT!)
LiquidEagle
02-13-2008, 10:17 PM
Christopher Nolan doesn't like using CGI ;)
Sorry but until they officially announce a director I'm going to pimp out the idea of Christopher Nolan directing without fail :-p
Anyhoo, I definitely think Clint Eastwood would be the best Old Snake... The great thing about Christian Bale is that he already ate a snake in the jungle in Rescue Dawn, so he's already won the role of "Snake Eater" ;)

I have the matching Castor Oil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castor_oil) for you... if you REALLY wanna do it in front of a camera^^
I'd rather be someone behind the scenes, like Major Zero or Sigint... (btw... in MGS3, he at first says, Major Tom and then changes because "he found out something"... I dunno what that reason is, but in Germany, there is a song called Major Tom?!?). I've got very much personal experience in weapons training etc. (I was a Bundeswehr Luftwaffe soldier for some time, as you know)

No, it was because he'd read a book in which a group of POWs were trying to escape by digging tunnels. They tried and failed several times, and gave each of the tunnels a name.
He thought the tunnel they finally escaped by was called Tom, but it wasn't which is why he changed his codename. Tom ended in a dead end.

I look forward to another amazing Metal Gear Solid soundtrack. Metal Gear Solids 1 through 3 are amazing soundtracks, I love them.

Meh... the lack of news/footage at GDC news is a little disheartening. I was hoping for something.
A few podcasts back though, Ryan did say that while MGS4 is still in a media black out, MGO is not. Hopefully they have some sort of Online demo at GDC or we start seeing previews soon. I need my MGO fix ASAP.

We shouldn't really be privy to that stuff anyway, it's not for us.
Sucks, but, that's the way it is. I'd rather have the info than not, but, our leverage is dubious at best.
What do you guys reckon is next for MGS after Koj leaves the series ?
Possibly remakes of the first 2 games for PS3 ?

I dunno im thinking it would be kinda nice to pit Naked against Solid on next gen consoles assuming of course Eva's return in MGS4 doesnt mean a return for Naked snake in that game witch im starting to get the feeling will be the memorable moment Koj keeps going on about.

Snake vs Rohn
Drake vs Lara
Kratos vs Nariko
Sly Cooper vs Yorda
Ratchet vs Jak
Sackboy vs Clank
Ico vs Daxter
Wanda vs Keats
Hale vs Sev
Lightning vs Lenard
Bahamut vs Sand Wyrm Collosus etc.

You mean before the Soild games? As in the original Metal Gear from the NES /MSX2 days? If so, I too have been wanting that for a long time now. It will never happen though. :( But it would be awesome. The OG Snake story, remade today's standards. Taking on Big Boss in Outer Heaven. It would be sweet. But would they remake the original MSX2 game or the NES version? I have never played the MSX2 version. has anyone here played it? Know where I can get it?

Isnt that the version on MGS subsistence?
I don't know. I never got MGS Subsistence. I just read the Metal gear wiki and it sounds like the MSX2 version of Metal Gear was much better. man, I hate it when Americans/rest of the world get hosed for Japaneses games! :realmad:
* The biggest difference between the MSX and NES versions is in the absence of the actual Metal Gear mecha in the NES version. Instead, the player must destroy a "Super Computer" which controls all of Metal Gear's activities in its place. The method of destroying it was also changed. While in the MSX version, the player must place 16 plastic explosives on Metal Gear's feet based on the order given by Dr. Pettrovich, in the NES version the player must simply place the bombs over the Super Computer on no specific parts (however, the player must have already rescued Ellen and Petrovich first).
* In the MSX version, Snake performs an underwater insertion into Outer Heaven in the beginning of the game in the entrance of Building No. 1. Snake's entrance in Metal Gear Solid can be considered a homage to this. In the NES version, he performs an air insertion by skydiving and parachuting into the Jungle, similar to Naked Snake's entrance in Metal Gear Solid 3, with three other soldiers who disappear after landing. They are neither seen nor mentioned again.
* The level designs were altered greatly in the NES version. In the beginning of the game, the player must proceed through a jungle area before reaching the entrance of Building No. 1 through a truck. The first floor corridor of Building No. 1 was also remodeled greatly, with many of its trucks and rooms moved to other locations. The basement-level floors of Building No. 1 and 2 were made into separate buildings, Buildings No. 4 and 5, respectively.
* In order to reach Building No. 4 or 5, the player must go through one of two jungle mazes located west to each of the outdoor areas. The solution for both mazes are the same, although it is never actually given within the game. (Go west two screens, north one screen, and west one more screen.)
* Another boss, the Hind D, was replaced. Instead, the player faces a pair of gunners known as "Twin Shot" on the rooftop of Building No. 1.
* Since the player no longer has to parachute to reach Dr. Petrovich's cell in Building No. 1, the parachute was removed. An Iron Glove was added in its place, which allows the player to break hollow walls. However, in some versions of the NES game, the Iron Glove has no real use.
* The Flying Army located on the roof of Buildings No. 1 and 2 lost their ability to hover over the ground in the NES version.
* In the NES version, the "high alert" (or double exclamation mark) mode was disabled. This means the player can always make their escape from alert mode by simply moving to the adjacent screen.
* The player can no longer acquire rations or ammo by punching enemy soldiers in Sneaking Mode.
* Solid Snake's face no longer appears in the transceiver mode's screen.
* Big Boss's final message to the player after the closing credits was removed.
* Some of the music (mainly, the two main themes and the alert mode theme) was changed in the NES version.
* There are also several other minor differences in gameplay, including the addition of several bugs and glitches. Some of the radio conversations were "misplaced" as a result of the redesigned areas in the NES game. For example, if the player calls Schneider in front of the room containing the Gas Mask in Building No. 1, he will tell Snake the location of the mine detector instead. This is due to the fact that the same spot in the MSX version used to be a minefield. In addition, the player's bullets have a farther range than they do in the MSX version, and the player can shoot while wearing the cardboard box.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_(video_game)
So not only was the MSX2 version better looking, it was much more feature rich. So is the version on MGS Subsistence the MSX2 version of the NES version?
EDIT: Got my answer from the wiki. It is the MSX2 version with an updated English script. Man, I am getting that today!
I just checked my Subsistence box and it says that both are the msx versions of the first and second game so i would recommend you get subsistence. Trust me the new camera 3d camera in snake eater for this version is brilliant compared to the original isometric camera ( only downside i the draw distance but its not that bad ) and add to that online and the MSX2 game your craving and alls good right? Oh and PS i have the pal release if that makes a difference although im sure both regional versions are probably the same.
I've got Subsistence, pretty awesome. :)

MGS4 Opening Movie, In Production Over a Year
"The creator of MGS4's opening movie, Alexis Tylevich, joins Ken and Ryan on the show to discuss the project and talk about their wild night in Roppongi."
The opening movie includes PMC Adverts & Live Footage.
Apparently Hideo Kojima himself is more impressed with this opening movie than the actual game!

So a release date huh? I can see the June 12th thing being true, that is plausible. But bundled? with a 80GB when they are canceling it? I find that mighty hard to believe. That MDS4 would be bundled at all is just a crazy idea. I don't think Konami would be down with that, not unless Sony paid them the full amount for what they sell for games for.
It would move PS3's, that is for sure though. Bundle it with the 120 GB that rumored and people will freak.
