Nothing is. Nothing is sufficient. Not even necessary or required. 1 GB is not necessary. Neither is 50 GB.

But short rebuttal to your comment is that neither you nor me know what has been done with 50 GB of data in MGS4.

The only thing to be sure about is nothing is necessary, but what proportion (especially at this point) of it can you define as fluff?

P.S. Eventually it will get to a point where there are enough prime games to sample from (that claim they have used 25GB or more to great effect) and determine qualitatively what effect the larger capacity has had for those developers who 'claim' to use it. Will it only be technically enhancing sound quality, or will it be more than that? We'll know in the future.

So any word on how many locations that the game takes place in around the world? With 50GB it must be quit a few. I have heard it is a lot, but no official word really. How many would be enough and how many would be too many?

Personally I would like a big number because more variety can't be bad. I just don't want more of the jungle environments. Though i just hope there is multiple paths and ways go get through each one.

Also, you have to consider this amazing intro that is being put into the game; the intro alone could require tons of storage space. The recently updated teaser site for Metal Gear Online has announced that the Metal Gear Online Beta will be starting April 14th 2008. The service will offficially start on 12th June, Metal Gear Solid 4's release date of course.

Access to the Beta will be granted by pre-ordering Metal Gear Solid 4 at "all major retailers", specific details remain unannounced, however.

I never knew what the receipt was until Loss-Prevention came to the store and hassled the shit out of me and started accusing me of theft & what-not... since they obviously couldn't prove it (can't prove what didn't happen), they fired me for letting people use their Edge 10% discount cards for their friends, something EVERY EB/Gamestop employee, manager, and even District Manager does for customers. Then they fined me $200 for the losses (which they can't do legally, but since I didn't know that was against the law I signed that I would pay it since they weren't letting me leave and I thought it would equate to a settlement out of court in case they like, went after me)... and then they threatened me with a civil lawsuit and since I couldn't afford a lawyer or anything to fight it I had to pay $350 to settle out of court.

That, is why I will never give Gamestop/EB my money. :laugh:

It always hurt me to put stickers on games (especially new ones), and I always begged my manager not to put those lame-ass promotion stickers & shit on new games too. They definitely don't come off easily, but some stores actually have a shrink-wrap machine at the counter so they use that instead of stickers (I constantly asked about my store doing that too). Don't buy Gamestop's used games, that's where they get all their money :-p. Look how little they give for them, and how much they charge for them -- straight-up profit :shocked: . I use Amazon now, but I still preorder games at Gamestop through my friend who still works there so I can get the pre-order bonuses ;)

Yeah, and last generation, more often than not, the games only had 5 language options (english (no work needed), german, french, spanish and italian... the usual "multi 5 releases") and usually no soundtrack other than english... (There are games, that got german VOs, like GoW, but mostly, like MGS and the like, they don't, and I am GLAD!)

I mean, it took Sony now 4 months to translate Pain for Europe... Did they have to teach the translaters the languages first, or what?? I mean, this game isn't very dialogue heavy, is it?

Why can't they just give us the freakin' option to participate? I couldn't care less for german subs in ANY game. In fact, I hated the german subs in FFX (not optional!), because they used a different translation as the english VOs used... Thus the text often stated very different things, than what the voices said. (It is said, that the German subs were directly translated from the japanese source too, thus the interpretation needed for those translations led to the differential)

And why don't they even offer those betas to the Maltesians, Brits and whatnot among us, who natively speak english? I am getting "punished" twice for residing in Germany (higher price and worse release dates) other than the US or Japan.

Yes, this "rant" is not the first by me, and it will continue, until SCEE resolves these issues once and for all... PC games usually do NOT suffer from this problems, so why do console releases do? And they do translations for their games too. Even Microsoft treats Europe better^^ (not Nintendo though, they treat Europe, especially Australia... yes, according to game console sellers, Australia is part of Europe, because of PAL... thing of the past in HD consoles, but still in all their minds)

I went out to ebgames and they said that they usually get the promotional items like the disc for the beta a month before the game releases. But I'm still going to go out in April to check if they have the disc.

Konami have started to send out Metal Gear Solid 4 Promo DVDs to those who have pre-ordered Metal Gear Solid 4 already.

I discovered this while looking around eBay for any MGS4 merch for myself and noticed a listing for it going at an amazing £85. I then stumbled across a user on GameTrailer's named Deathseeker who also had been send the disc from their pre-order. No word on what's actually on the disc from the eBay selling or Deathseeker, but ill update as soon as we hear.

No problem. The best thing to do is to call often and ask for the manager on duty. There's a sheet that prints out at the beginning of each business day that tells them when to expect stuff that's already been shipped, so if it's on that list they should have a rough estimate (it's not always exact) of when it's coming in... If you reserved it then they should hold on to it for you, but they probably won't call you, and it's "while supplies last" so you aren't guaranteed one, especially if it's as awesome of a thing as this, so try to keep calling :)

The reason people did not like Raiden is because he was too feminine and was a green rookie. When you play a game like MGS you want to feel like a bad ass soldier that can save the world and beat all odds. I did not get that feeling with Raiden in MGS2 and it did not help that you were forced to play with the character for a large portion of the game. The shock of having to play with a rookie character really created a lot of the resentment for Raiden period. In MGS4 they decided to make Raiden a war veteran and a super cyborg ninja like Grey Fox another one of my favorite MGS2 characters. Also,
I like how in the MGS4 trailer Raiden tells Snake It's my turn to protect you and this statement makes it clear Raiden is a bad ass... :guns:

I thoroughly enjoyed playing and seeing through the eyes of Raiden. That's all.

I don't even care about how 'good' a character he was, because that's not what really mattered to me even though it was well portrayed.

He was the perfect 'vector' unit for telling the story of MGS2.

And yes! Let's talk about Snake! We talk about Raiden so much...

It seems so hard to talk about Snake though since we all know that we all are obsessed with him and know everything about him...

What do people think about the 'tension' meter btw? I thought it was kind of awkward that it was so numerically represented. Then again camouflage is numerically represented too.

I'd rather have just a gauge for tension either way though. It seems a lot more of a qualitative quality.

Also I thought it was kind of too awkward to just look at a dirty magazine and decrease tension. It seems too random in that's it's so effective. I don't think it will bother me that much but I don't fancy it.

I think the idea of looking at the magazine and flipping through it is cool, but it decreases tension absurdly fast I thought. I'd like tension to be dependent on a more bodily dependent scale. It takes time to go from stressed to unstressed, not just a few page flips thru a magazine even if the magazine is hawt.

I was just at eb today. I wanted to pick up essential but it was in yet wtf. So I instead asked to change my pre-order to mgs4 and asked for the limited edition. The guy said there isn't one so I'll probably have to come in a later time to ask for it. None of these idiots know anything. He was asking what system I wanted to pre-order it for. I should of said nintendo man wtf is wrong with these guys.

This is all in the cool Canada which is starting to warm up. I believe we'll also get the LE we always get what the US gets. lol

This is what kills me cause here in South Africa we usually get the special editions but usually 2 weeks or sometimes even a month after the regular edition is released so here is my dilema do i buty the game twice or wait in my own personal hell until the LE is released AAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

hidex, sounds like the eb you have to go to is full of useless employees :laugh: . I always got bothered when my coworkers would ask people reserving something like Mario Galaxy or Halo 3 what system they wanted it on -- *sigh*

Unfortunately the people at EBs & Gamestops with access to the information are too stupid/lazy to access it, so it ends up hurting the customer. If it continues and it comes to pass that you don't receive your bonus because of bogus information, call customer service and give them an earful, make them ship you one or ship it to your store and have them call you, I'm sure they'll work something out because this bonus is too big to miss out on.

yeah, they probably won't be coming in for another 2 weeks or so (turns out my friend at EB was looking at the Essentials Collection in their system :laugh:), so there's time... I'd try to make sure whichever EB you pre-ordered at knows you and knows that you pre-ordered MGS4 :)

I know most of the guys at my EB personally, they tend to have some good gaming knowledge. Except for the girl that works there. Dumb as a post lol. i was in picking up uncharted a while back and someone asked her if Starcraft 2 had a release date and she asked: "whats starcraft?" i almost died lol.

Like most people here Im a huge fan of the Metal Gear franchise and a huge supporter of the brilliant Kojima-san.

So with that in mind, Im doing my university presentation on non-other then MGS4. However, I plan on discussing most aspects of the PMC's and the real world applications they can have in the future and present. Now to cut to the chase, I also planned on covering the knowledge of the Patriots since my professor loves politics and conspiracies I think this will go over well. I know most of what everyone knows about them but I thought having an in depth discussion on them would help me get some great material and since PSI has the most devote MGS followers I think this discussion will be great and it will satisfy my craving for answers on their role in the new game.

So from this point, hit me with it... the Philosophers... La-li-lu-le-lo... the Patriots... the famous names we all know.

Agreed my biggest fear/regret for this series is how amazingly well done it is that it scares away people new to the series.

That is the biggest shame of all, because anyone who hasnt played these games doesnt know what it means to be a gamer in my opinion. And regardless of numbers sold I still think everyone who picks up a controller and can appreciate a story so well written and interwoven within our own history can understand how brilliant a series we have here.

Shadow, in one of my theatre classes I got one assignment where I could pick my own performance, and I picked a speech from MGS2 given by GW/Arsenal Gear/The Patriots (in the form of Rose & Campbell), because I think this it's very interesting and a part of The Patriots' goal as self-proclaimed protectors of the human species...

The digital society furthers human flaws and selectively rewards development of convenient half-truths. Just look at the strange juxtapositions of morality around you. secondly, the controls arent that bad, you just lack the ability to softly press buttons. idiot ^^ But that aside, yes Ryan Payton has already stated that MGS4 will have two control types to choose from, the eastern style which most are use to, and the more western style controls that are "simplified"

Yeah, over the shoulder view lets you use R1 to shoot, which we're all mostly used to by now (otherwise the constant stream of FPS's we get hasn't done its job)

Ew, I don't think I ever want to use the over the shoulder view/FPS gameplay style. I really don't want to play MGS4 like a shooter (except maybe like Passive just to ***k around :P).

Unless I absolutely have to while I'm trying to play the game normally... but I will try to avoid it. I prefer my classic MGS stylez. R1 view, pressure on Square, and sidestepping ftw, and all the other ways to control MGS. That's my Tactical Espionage Action.

MGS3 is already close to ideally how I would like to play my MGS. I love how it controls. It's not fluid in the way FPS is for blasting your way through corridors, but that's never what I wanted MGS to control like.

I love the way MGS3 worked. The controls also like fed into tension, especially in the fight against The Fear. It's kind of like because it was difficult to manage even though you knew well how to control Snake, it was still difficult to track The Fear. If you could track The Fear easily, what's the point?

You could have FPS and make The Fear move faster, but then it's just a shooter. So why? Plus it's just more cinematic from the way you fight The Fear using MGS3 mechanics :)

It's kind of like in the way RE4 doesn't let you strafe. I love that about RE4 because it's not a 'shooter' shooter. It's RE4.

I got that bit from the MGS2 Text Dump (I don't think it was from IGN FAQs but it's the same thing as the one I used)

It doesn't give names or go in any real order, but if you have an idea of what you're looking for from it you can just Ctrl + F it and search for a key word, and since all of us have thoroughly rocked MGS2 you can pretty much tell who says which lines.

The script for the game is also in the Document of Metal Gear Solid 2, so if you have that it would be a lot easier to track down info.

Kick ass presentation and that Patriots quote rocked my professors face right off. The discussion about PMC armies becoming a reality in the future was good enough that he commented on how he enjoyed the exceptional use of real world applications in a game.

This is coming from a guy who before 4 weeks ago never heard of Tetris so thats great. Classmates didnt dig the history recap too much but to be fair I hit them with the best parts and explained it as best as possible but that was hit or miss with them. Overall I got 87% on my presentation, Kojima I owe you one!!!

hmm sorry to burst bubbles but i dont think we'll see much romance in MGS4, there may be some sparkage between snake and Meryl, MAYBE a bit of harmless flirty comments between snake and Naomi. But as far as a full blown love plot and some sort of romantic scenes... no chance :P

As far as i can tell, MGS4 is really going to be full on action, snake will most likely be on the battlefield all the time, and as we know all over the globe. and unless he joins the mile high club or he lives through the game :P we wont see much in the way of love. The is just no time for it, and i dont think snake is the man he once was, yes his 'age' is younge but his body is dying as we know, with that brings a different menality. from all the trailers we've seen i've gotten the vibe, he just wants to give up, he's lived his life (however short it may have been) and he's done. that kind of person really sees no point in love. and furthermore, he and meryl ended pretty badly. Point is: he doesn't seem to have it in him to care at this point, nor does the plot have the time to spare, same for meryl. She's in Fox now. think.. honestly what time would they have to cram in serious talks and resolving the fight THEN be all romantic. none.
