...as characters talk and reference other stars of this universe, you may see an X or L1 button icon quickly flash on the screen. Hit the right button while it's highlighted and you'll be treated to a very brief context flashback. Basically, the system uses images and moments from the past Metal Gear games to help visually rekindle your own memories of the who, what, where, and why.
Used for flashbacks, not playable.

A single shed of tear streamed along my cheek when I saw shadow moses with MGS4 graphics by the way (which was a few days ago but I only click this thread after a long break since half the time it's not about mgs4 lol).

Whoa whoa whoa guys, these are two separate items.

The flashbacks where you hit L1 or X we already knew about. It plays moments from previous Metal Gears (much like how MGS2 constantly referenced MGS and showed MGS1 cinemas) for backstory.

What this new REvived trailer and what Smokey's talking about is something different.

I actually misread Smokey's comment, sorry dude haha. I thought you were just acting stupid and asking if MGS 4 was going to look that good :-p

Anyways, there's still no word on what this Shadow Moses thing means, and I don't think there will be until we actually have our hands on the game.

Sony are expecting massive sales in Japan:

100,000 MGS4 PS3 Bundles for Japan
That's a lot. Maybe.
by John Tanaka

US, May 7, 2008 - Japan is recovering from its Golden Week period of holidays, making news slow from the island nation, but we did stumble upon one little bit that ought to help those who take part in office pools over system sales. The web version of Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reports today that Sony plans on shipping between 80,000 and 100,000 units of the recently announced MGS4 PS3 bundle. Sony refers to this as a limited edition bundle, so we presume they intend to sell out of it quickly.

First announced last week, this bundle combines a 40 gigabyte PS3 in your choice of Clear Black, Ceramic White, or Satin Silver colors, with an extra Dual Shock 3 controller and a copy of the standard version of MGS4, all for 49,800 yen. This amounts to a 4,000 yen savings over buying the items separately.

Konami has its own bundle on the way, which combines a new metallic color version of the PS3 with a copy of the MGS4 limited edition for 51,800 yen. Shipping quantities have not been revealed for this set.

an interview with the reviewer

edit... oh shit! don't read this is you are good at conjecture

Metal Gear Solid 4: The first review is out!
And we've talked to the man who wrote it. Here's what he thinks
Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

Metal Gear Solid 4. Looks like it's going to be good, doesn't it? But just how good, exactly? Just "Hmmm, this is fun, I'm glad I did buy a PS3 now" good? Or perhaps "There you go Hideo. My first-born child in recompense for this audio-visual wonder you have kindly bestowed upon my life" good?

One man knows the answer to that. His name is Paul Fitzpatrick and he's written the world's first review of the game for the UK's Official PlayStation Magazine. And he very happily gave it a none-better 10/10 score. The review will be in issue 19, which goes on sale on Friday 16th of May, but you don't have to wait that long. We have you see, spoken to Paul and found out exactly how he feels about the biggest game on the PS3 this year. Want to know? Of course you do.

One word of warning though. We've tried to keep this interview as spoiler-free as possible, but if you absolutely, positively don't want to even read a single hint of a seed of a scrap of a possibility of a plot point that you could extrapolate to work out the truth by the time the game comes out, click away now. In fact if that's the sort of person you are, why the hell are you reading this story anyway? Be off with you!

GamesRadar: First things first. This is the epic resolution to an epic saga and it comes on a Blu-ray disc. Just what sort of percentage of the playing time do the cut-scenes take up?

Paul Fitzpatrick: Hard to say. I didn't time the cut-scenes, but I completed MGS4 in just over 29 hours, and at a guess I'd say it was two thirds playing to one third watching. But that is a guess…

GR: How long did you spend finishing MGS4 for the review? What was your play schedule like and how how complete a look at the game do you feel you got? Anything you would have liked to take some extra time over?

PF: 29 hours and six minutes was my exact play-through time, and I saw everything I felt I needed to see to really get the measure of the game. I'd love to go back and play through with all the cool weapons and items unlocked of course. There are some beauties. Oh, and the play through didn't take in Metal Gear Online, which is being reviewed separately.

GR: The gameplay formula seems to have made the biggest single-game evolution we've ever seen in the MGS series. Does it still feel like a Metal Gear game despite that? If so, how have Konami maintained that essence, and if not, how have things changed?

PF: It totally feels like Metal Gear. The faction dynamic isn't over-used and when it is available is only ever an option, supplementing stealth. It was a bit of classic Kojima misdirection to suggest that everything would be tied to that. The characters, themes and to a lesser extent, the core controls and abilities are where MGS really resides, and they have remained the same, even if what you do with them has altered.

GR: The game seems to be made of a wider spread of game styles and mechanics this time. Is it still as focused an overall experience as we expect from Metal Gear?

PF: Yes, for the reasons above. Emotionally, there is some dilution as there are so many individual stories to tie up and resolve, but from a gameplay perspective it's remarkably focused.

GR: What's the single biggest improvement over the previous games? What makes the biggest difference in MGS4?

PF: Having what is basically a classic FPS shooter control set up is the biggest improvement (although I guess it debuted in MGS3: Subsistence). It means that when Snake has to shoot it out, you can negotiate that with confidence for the first time.

GR: You said in your review that MGS4 isn't perfect. What were your biggest complaints with it, and why did those issues disappoint you? Any major flaws?

PF: I think the game's ending suffers from the Return Of The King syndrome in that it keeps ending when it should really draw a line earlier on. That's the main one for me. Also, the 'togglable' auto-aim isn't always as smart at locking on as it should be in those situations where it really makes sense that you use it.

GR: Why weren't those problems enough to stop you giving the game a 10/10 rating?

PF: For me, like the greatest films, it's outstanding because of, and not despite, its idiosyncrasies and flaws. It's the expression of one very creative person's vision and to see that undiluted with all it's eccentricities and genius intact is remarkable. It's also a cracking story and truly rewarding to play.

GR: Can you talk about anything that really surprised you? Anything you weren't expecting, or that you expected to be there but wasn't?

PF: I was expecting the faction dynamic to be enforced, and to feature for longer. The other thing that surprised me is something that should be left to surprise you too. Sorry!

GR: Without giving too much away, which characters and story elements should we be looking out for this time? Any surprises or character moments you found particularly rewarding as a long-term fan? Does Raiden redeem himself?

PF: Raiden does redeem himself, although clearly Koj loves him a lot more than we ever will. Big Mama's story is worth looking out for too, but it's impossible to say much more without spoiling it.

GR: Did the game's ending feel as final a resolution as we're being led to believe it is, or is there still potential for continuation with or without Kojima?

PF: A bit of both. This is the end of Snake's story, but there are other characters who feasibly could live to sneak another day.

GR: As an overall production, does the game deserve the years of hype it's garnered?

PF: It is unique, and mostly for the very best reasons. It is, lest I haven't said this enough, a really, really enjoyable game to play. So, for my money, yes.

GR: Do you think its release will make any kind of difference to the PS3 as a platform? Some say it'll sell systems like nothing we've ever seen before, while some think it will only sell to the pre-converted hardcore Metal Gear audience.

PF: I think GTAIV is more likely to shift hardware, but if you like games at all and/or have any interest in where they're going, this is indispensable. This is a game for the fans. But if you're not one, it doesn't take much to get on board. The earlier games are still superb, and wikipedia can get you up to speed with the plot in fifteen minutes. Get involved!

GR: In ten years, how do you think MGS4 will be viewed in comparison to the rest of the series?

PF: As a brilliantly inventive, reassuringly mad grand finale to a consistently inventive and mad series.

:spit: This kind of bull critiques make me wanna puke.

When we see a perfect 10 we know that it was not the game the person reviewed.
But that's the problem with brand specific mag, exclusive reviews and advert financing (not even going to include fanboy journalism ^.^).

EDIT: Not attacking the game, just the score and vague review + interview (plus some personal hate towards his comment about FPS being the best addition).

Konami announces UK MGS4 pre-order bonus

Posted May 12th 2008 8:30AM by Jem Alexander
Filed under: News
Konami has come through for Europeans once again by announcing that the "Metal Gear Saga Vol 2.0" pre-order bonus will be made available in the region. The DVD, containing a seven-part documentary which "details the origins of previous Metal Gear games and the evolution of Hideo Kojima's epic series", will be sent out to people who pre-order Metal Gear Solid 4 at "key retail partners across Europe."

The press release also reiterates the existence of the Limited Edition version of the game, which is available in the UK at Play.com. The bundle includes a 6" action figure of Old Snake, a "Making Of" Blu-ray disc, a copy of the game's soundtrack along with the game itself. The "Making Of" Blu-ray will have "two high-definition documentaries which offer a candid, behind-the-scenes look at the development" of the game. While this is a great bundle, it's up to you whether it's worth the £80 pricetag.

Anyone seen the kojima blog lately? the US PS board did: sorry if already postedThis is Hideo Kojima's LATEST BLOG
http://www.kjp.konami.jp/gs/hideoblog
im sure someone in Konami will translate it or something
but i just wanted you guys to have the first read

NOTICE: this is not a direct translation...i have only translated what i could and only the important stuff
please, no hate! i worked so hard on this, THANKS =]

Hideo:
i hate to say this myself, but i am a Japanese man, so i try to be modest, or even more. i dont wish to brag about it to say "OH I AM THE MGS4 GUY (it's true, he doesn't)" or to say "THIS IS THE BEST ONE", just like how AMERICANS brag stuff like this [i was a bit mad on this part...but then again, it is true...right?] i do enjoy myself, but in my mind i still think insufficient of myself. that's why i interview in Japanese, and SAI (translator) translates my side of the inteviews very well in English. Because the WEST does not heavily carry the idea of MODESTY, i am getting criticized in the magazines/blogs. in conclusion, on my recent comment about my disappointment with MGS4, the comments derived from "MGS4, inside the biggest PS3 Game" to "Hideo disappointed with MGS4" it was translated compeltely translated wrong due to cultural differences. There are several comments that is like the disappointment articles, like the one that says "Hideo think PS3 can't not handle the GAME" or "the 50GB Blu-ray is simply not enough." it's funny how others think "did Hideo really say that?" then ask me, and my answer is obviously "NO" but then...i guess i am responsible for all of the articles...

from now one, i will say what i plan to say
for example, let's say this dveloper is making a new kind of a car. he claims that this can FLY. now there is no stop when you say "there is a car that can fly." When you claim that it can fly, the speculation grows from "oh so it can FLY?!!!" and the developer would set his goals higher. the specualtion is that if the car flies, then it should reach a MACH speed...but it doesnt stop there...it'd go beyond the specualtion of then "it sholuld go into space!" with all the excitement around, the developer would go deeply into making the car going into space...however, he'll come up to the public and say the car reaches the MACH speed, but it fails to go into the space. but he shouldnt give up, because for a car to even reach a mach speed and go into air is revolutionary. i wished to trasnfer my thoughts like such, but i guess it didnt work very well

the next time i interview in America, i will just say "MGS4 is the BEST, THE END" it is shameful for a japanese man to speak so blatantly, but if i dont, things like this [above] can happen...MGS4 isnt exactly MY proerty, so i dont have a TOTAL control over it and sometimes i get confused with it. some may be disappointed the way i say things, but i do release the game with confidence. in fact that what i have been doing, not just this ps3 game, but my previous ps2 titles. i always reached for the higher goal and i try to go for it. even in my company, im learning a lot about media training, but i wanted to do more than just that and here i am with the interview. but this [like the incidents above] wont stop me from doing moer interviews, i mean its not like interviews have ratings. i wont QUIT!

- once again, i apologize for the translations grammar & spelling...it was really hard cuz that is what translation is
i just wanted to do a little service for the MGS4 fans [like Hideo x)] and here is a BRIEF translation of his latest blog

thank you once again and have a good weekend
i love the MGS series blog here! always useful informations =)

Thanks for that. It's definitely something we knew because most of us are big Kojima/MGS fans and we know his style of being insanely brilliant but also ridiculously modest. Like it says in there, it's also a Japanese trait (unless you're Team Ninja). Anybody who read the articles and got seriously worried that MGS4 wasn't going to be fucking incredible doesn't understand the creative process, IMO, and this is where Kojima really sets himself apart as an artist. While the rest of the gaming world builds up hype and will only talk about their game in good ways that are marketing-friendly, artists in other areas like film, music, or other visual arts are able to be much more honest about their work without these kinds of reactions.

It's because Americans (no offense) are the opposite extreme and most sites are american... (I'd say, Europeans are on a middle ground... some more than others...)

And now, please bear with me and DO NOT take this personal, Americans ARE known for their arrogance (again, not all are like this), and thus assume, the other person they talk to are the same. Asian cultures are modest (it's good, but not always, as seen in this case... Not that Kojima should have said something different) and the person who interprets a quite by such a person is to blame, if he does it wrong.

I hate the ever growing 99% argument. You can't defeat anyone who uses it because everyone who has the possibility of disagreeing get's put into the 1% category.

Every country has plenty situations in history where this argument can apply to them including now (Japan DEFINITELY isn't discounted from this).

The problem centers on the peoples' dependence on the media to understand things outside of their domain. However the media paints it is how the people see it plain and simple.

But perfectionists are never 100% and truly happy with what they accomplish. There's always the feeling of incompleteness in form or other, even when all the others say what you have accomplished is ridiculously awesome.

And Hideo, like other perfectionists, belong to this category. With the additional Japanese modesty you can easily get misunderstood.

What I can understand is Hideo was reaching for he moon. I recall him wanting thoroughly destructable environments, hence "no place to hide". I could relate the lack of this to the amount of memory in PS3, you would have to do magic to create such environment to a game with big, open areas.

From my rep comments:
lol, +rep for being perm banned from GAF, that's a good thing

LOL and thanks for the rep ^^

It actually feels great not being able to post at GAF anymore (though it would have had been nice with a more detailed reason than "Yeah nice try").

I mean in the past I would have been all over people like AniHawk for making uninformed posts like the this one:

MGS always sounds so videogamey. And Don LaFontane (the Trailer Guy, however you spell his name) spouting off that tagline is pure cheese. You get used to the cheesiness and drama while you're playing the game, but that trailer really shows just how goofy the series is.

Kojima is a great cineaste, and Konami does seem serious about bringing his vision to the screen. Regarding to potential directors, Saito says, "Paul Thomas Anderson is interested."

Wow, the GOOD Paul Anderson, no less. I had to go to wikipedia to double-check.

One thing is to be uninformed, but he's straight out proud of being ignorant.

It seem to be past his comprehension that Kojima is making MGS as homage to old Hollywood movies which he enjoyed as a kid and that the theatrical trailer is composed like theatrical Hollywood trailers were back then with the chain smoking narrator and everything.
It's no different from the Machete trailer (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=W8cCzltPD6Y) featured in Grindhouse(Watch it now if you haven't already).

Attacking the dialog in MGS when it's done as homage is just plain wrong, it's like attacking the dialog in movies like "Desperado", "Grindhouse" (both parts), "Kill Bill", "Blue Velvet", "the Quick & the Dead" and so on.

Heck he's even proud of not knowing the director of "There Will be Blood" and "Magnolia". :tardbang:
Though I guess when being oblivious to the concept of post modern then directors like Paul Anderson will fly straight past one no matter how many awards they have won and how many Oscars they have been nominated for.

Paul Anderson would be the perfect director for MGS with his sense of blending a good story with the post modern homage and he's a bit more grounded when it comes to dialog than his his friend Quentin Tarantino.

But those GAF days are behind me, now I just stroll past those twat infested posts.. :duh: well apart from this incident which we'll let slide.

EDIT: Nooooooooo *cries* the thought of it being Paul W.S. Anderson had never crossed my mind, I mean who would proudly mention him as an example of top notch directors lining up to do a MGS movie?

it wasn't an April Fools

You Really Did Get Assassin's Creed In My MGS4!

That Ubisoft/Kojima April Fool's joke was pretty elaborate! Snake running around MGS4 dressed as Altair, looking for all the world like it was actually in the game...so would it surprise you to hear that it wasn't really a gag? Yeah, that's right. It was announced at the MGS4 wrap party today that MGS4 players will indeed be able to unlock an Assassin's Creed outfit for Snake (we won't tell you how), which were it not for the silver moustache and trademark cigarette would have you thinking Altair himself had time-travelled his way into the final Metal Gear title. How's this happening? Why's this happening? Who knows, the mind boggles.

MGS4 intro: war has changed

Someone turned on a valve of MGS4 media today. The opening intro to Metal Gear Solid 4 doesn't feature any spoilers, so feel free to watch. In fact, we feel like we've seen this before ... when the game was first debuted. It's been a long time coming, but the final chapter of Snake's adventure is finally making its way to release. We can't wait to see more.

Indeed, I've watched it roughly 10 times now (sadly I had other thing to do too or else it would have been more).

No one can any longe be wondering why MGS4 demands for Blu-Ray and I'm very happy to see that the game doesn't just take place at battlefields, there's intermissions of ol' school stealth too spiced up with what would seem to be more interactive (HL2?) like cut-scenes unless I read too much into the glimps in the trailer...

Shame on me for attacking the OPSM critique, not the 10 makes a lot more sense.

The intro video is nothing more than a short version of the 15-minute trailer shown at E3 '06.

The only new thing is that there's an English dub instead of Japanese, and that Campbell explains a bit about the mission you're about to embark on in the background.

It obviously leads straight into you taking control of Snake.

Watch Kojima play the first ten minutes of Metal Gear Solid 4

Posted May 13th 2008 2:15PM by Andrew Yoon

Metal Gear Mania continues today. Series creator and director Hideo Kojima presented the first ten minutes of Metal Gear Solid 4 to the press today, and the folks at 1UP were able to capture it off-screen. This all Japanese-footage includes the intro movie, but goes directly into gameplay. More than the visuals, the audio is what haunts us the most. The score pulls on the heartstrings, while the sounds of war sound absolutely brutal ... as they should.

Metal Gear Solid 4 golden
Konami announces completion of "conclusion to the Metal Gear Saga" at press conference, unveils world tour, collaboration with iPod, Ubisoft, and more.
By Hirohiko Niizumi, GameSpot
Posted May 13, 2008 6:45 pm GMT

TOKYO--With Metal Gear Solid 4's anticipated worldwide release just a month away, Konami held a press conference near its headquarters today to announce that the game's development is officially complete. Press and guests were invited to the Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills cineplex, where they were treated to the latest trailers and live gameplay on the big screen with some popcorn on the side.

Similar to a real movie experience, the conference started off with some commercials, which were actually fake ads based on the Metal Gear Solid 4 world. Five commercials were shown, starting off with a "Praying Mantis unmanned security system." The ad featured a huge security robot chasing after a man on a bike and ultimately catching him, with fatal results. The ads are all available at Metal Gear Solid's new official site, together with a fresh Hollywood-style trailer that features numerous new scenes.

After the commercials and a brief look at what was apparently the game's opening sequence, Konami Digital Entertainment president Fumiaki Tanaka took the stage to make the opening announcements.

"In recent years, casual games have become extremely popular. With the rise of new consumers, the [game industry] is expanding into new directions," said Tanaka. "While it's said that the current mainstream is casual games, we took the challenge to make a blockbuster title, Metal Gear Solid 4, headed by Kojima."

He continued, "Metal Gear Solid 4 surpasses the scale of its previous titles in all aspects, including their story, visuals, and music. Using the PlayStation 3's high capabilities to its capacity, I believe that our developers have realized MGS4 without any compromise."

However, Tanaka also stressed that MGS4 certainly won't be the last of Konami's big projects on the PS3. "We believe that the PlayStation 3 still has some undiscovered capabilities, and there's still many points where we can be more clever to take its full advantage," he teased. "We will continue to create more good products in the future."

Following Tanaka, director Hideo Kojima appeared on stage to announce the completion of his four-year long project. "I'm very happy that we can announce the completion of MGS4 in front of everyone here today," he said, beaming. "MGS4 has been an extremely difficult project. At one point, it was like an eternal spiral where the game felt like it would never get completed no matter how hard we worked on it."

"We took on all sorts of challenges in the making of MGS4," reminisced Kojima. "We were challenged to make MGS4 on the Cell-processor-operated, unknown monster of a hardware called the PlayStation 3. We were challenged to make MGS4 in high definition graphics and 5.1ch surround sound so that it'd play in the leagues of movies. We were challenged to give MGS4 the most [content] in the series, and so we had the largest number of developers working [on the franchise] ever. We were challenged to release the game simultaneously worldwide for the first time. And, we were challenged to make it the last title in the series, as the game will be the conclusion to the Metal Gear Saga."

Interestingly, Kojima also took the opportunity to make some comments on the current situation of the game industry, with Japanese publishers increasingly leaning toward casual games that don't require expensive development.

"Casual games have become mainstream in the industry," he declared. "It's not just a Japanese phenomenon but also something that's happening worldwide. There are new markets and possibilities opening up thanks to the trend, which is great. But on the other hand, we shouldn't forget about the hardcore gamers whose lives are about videogames. The gamers who consider video games a subculture, and enjoy taking their time to sit down and play games that gives them energy and courage. I wanted to remind those gamers about the fun of video games. I know that we're going against the trend, but we've been working hard for the past four years so that the fire [of non-casual games] won't blow out."

"I believe that video games are a form of synthesized art that evolves by adapting new technologies," continued Kojima. "It's a business, so there are difficult decisions, but when you think about the future of video games, I think that you need to take some risks to move on forward. Once you halt, it's really hard to go [back on track] and take steps forward. Unfortunately, overseas game production companies, which are well-funded and extremely skilled, have surpassed us by a couple of steps. It was once said that Japan molded the world's video game [industry], but that's becoming a thing of the past. Sad as it may be, it's the truth."

"We developed MGS4 for fans that love Metal Gear. But at the same time, I was creating it with some hopes to stir a revival of [non-casual] videogames."

Kojima then went on to play some Metal Gear Solid 4 on the cinema's big screen, revealing that the the game will be chapter-based, unlike the previous installments in the series. A few minutes of the first chapter, "Act 1: Liquid Sun," was played in hard mode.

After playing the game, Kojima revealed a number of new collaborations in Metal Gear Solid 4, the biggest being with Apple's iPod. Snake carries around an iPod in MGS4, which lets him play music tracks that he finds scattered throughout the game. Collected tracks can be played as background music during the game, with additional tracks being offered for download.

Last month on April Fool's Day, footage of Metal Gear Solid 4 featuring Snake in Altair's robe from Assassin's Creed appeared without warning on YouTube. Today, Kojima confirmed that it's more than just a prank, as the Altair costume will be an unlockable feature in the game.

Other collaborations in MGS4 include Triumph Motorcycles, Sony Ericsson, Regain, and Uniqlo. For Triumph Motorcycles, this is the second time they're collaborating with the Metal Gear series following MGS3. This time, their Bonneville T100 and Speed Triple Motorcycles will appear in a chase scene during the game.

With Sony Ericsson, their W62S model cell phone is seen in the game, used by Vamp and Naomi. What's more, the collaboration goes both ways. Sony Ericsson's mobile portal will offer a downloadable MGS4 version of "Ganbare Salary Man," a cell phone game about a middle-age salary worker.

Another product being advertised in MGS4 is Regain, a popular Japanese energy drink. The beverage is featured in-game as an item that energizes Snake when he takes a sip. This collaboration also goes both ways: Starting on June 10 in Japan, convenience stores will sell special bottles of Regain that include an original MGS4-themed cell phone cleaner or dog tag.

Uniqlo, a Japanese apparel maker with stores also in the USA and UK, France, Korea, China, and Hong Kong, doesn't have any items appearing in-game. Instead, they're collaborating with MGS4 with the release of six "Metal Gear Solid 4 UT Design" T-shirts, featuring logos and artworks inspired from the game. The shirts will be available at Uniqlo shops from June 12.

Similar to previous Metal Gear Solid installments, MGS4 will also feature a gravure girl. Minami Akina, an 18-year-old cover girl who's been a big fan of the series, appears on a poster in the game. Akina appeared during the press conference and congratulated Kojima on his game. Kojima's staff also congratulated Akina with a large MGS4 cake, as she's turning 19 in two days.

In Japan, Konami will also be releasing a variety of Metal Gear Solid merchandise near the launch of MGS4. The game's soundtrack will be released on May 28 as a two-disc set, featuring a total of 47 tracks.

"Ga-ko," a duck-shaped alarm clock that appears in the game, will be sold as a product on July 31.

A novel by Raymond Benson based on the original Metal Gear Solid will be released on May 25 (May 27 in the US), while a Japanese novel by Keikaku Ito, Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots, will be released on June 12.

In terms of launch promotions, plans for a "Metal Gear Solid 4 World Tour" are underway. Kojima and his staff will travel around the world to meet up with series fans. Tour locations include London, Madrid, Milano, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

In Japan, Konami will also be collaborating with Sony to push MGS4 on the PlayStation Network. The daily "Toro Station" show will feature three consecutive days of Metal Gear coverage, possibly with a sneak peek into the latest game's development facilities.

One of the surprises at the press conference came at the very end. As the lights dimmed out for the event to end, a one-way dialogue very similar to the endings in the MGS games took place, hinting about a "worldwide live broadcast" and "VIP" events in Akihabara, New York, and Los Angeles on June

Pelican Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth Headset
We've got our hands on the highly anticipated headset. Enjoy first pics and a preview.
by Gerry Block
US, May 14, 2008 - There's no shortage of enthusiasm for the upcoming launch of Metal Gear Solid 4 in any segment of the gaming industry. Pundits and the public are stoked, and as a matter of fact, so are gaming peripheral makers. Pelican has been working with Konami for a while prepping a special tie-in product to greet the game's release in America, and from the looks of the final product, MGS4 may well be greeted by the coolest game-peripheral tie-in we've yet seen.

We've got the first official pictures of Pelican's Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth Headset for the PlayStation 3, which show off more of the product than the leaked sales sheets that hit the net a few weeks ago. As a matter of fact, our pictures are of the real product that just arrived in the office. While we work on the full review, take a look at what Snake would use for his calls if he didn't have slightly more advanced technology available.

http://gearmedia.ign.com/gear/image/article/873/873980/pelican-metal-gear-solid-4-bluetooth-headset-20080514002351671-000.jpg
We must note that this is a pre-production sample. Any finish imperfections will be addressed when the retail products ship in a month.

The MGS4 Headset is a standard Bluetooth 2.0 hands-free device, which means it can be paired with both the PlayStation 3 and any Bluetooth-enabled cell phone so you can rock it both at home and on the street. We're certainly down to roll with it in public, as it offers a good deal of contrast to the stand-issue Bluetooth headsets on the street. Spec-wise its battery life is rated at 8-hours of talk time and 160-hours of standby.

Pelican will launch the Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth Headset day and date with the game's release, June 12. Retail price will be set at $59.99. Stay tuned for our upcoming feature review to see how the headset performs in the heat of battle / the streets of Los Angeles.

Hideo Komjia Not Disappointed With Metal Gear Solid 4 After All

Is Hideo Kojima disappointed with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots? Well we were lead to believe that a while back, when Edge Magazine published an interview with the MGS creator. How however, Kojima states that he was merely misquoted.

“On the internet, there’s stuff saying ‘Hideo Kojima isn’t satisfied with the PS3’. I’d like to talk about that today. I just got back from Paris and did 15 interviews and everyone asked me about it, did I say that. The meaning of what I said has totally been changed, made totally different. Today, I’d like to talk about that,” he said.

Kojima comments that when he is doing an interview, he speaks in Japanese, and cannot control how the writers and translators interpret that into English.

“What I say is then translated in English, and the writer then changes that into their own words and writes that. So, right there, the meaning of what I say changes a lot.”

No MGS game is 10 hours on its first run-through, if it is you missed too much :-p

MGS1 was about 12 hours, MGS2 was about 11 or 12, MGS3 took me a little less than 16 hours my first go-through (it took some of my friends 19), and given how big MGS4's going to be, 21 hours sounds pretty conservative. I kinda hope it's short though, because I'm going to play the game from start to finish regardless of length as soon as I get it

MGS4 Limited Edition PS3 Hardware Bundle Details!

+ Posted by Brandon Laurino // Konami Online

Hi all!

As mentioned in Monday’s post, last night was Konami’s Gamer’s Night in San Francisco. We announced a whole slew of new titles, had special guests like Mr. Kojima show up, and – of particular interest to the readers here, based on the comments – announced details of the Gun Metal Gray MGS4 Limited Edition PS3 Hardware Bundle! You can see details on all the new announcements at our special Konami.com Gamer’s Night feature here, and I’ll give you some details on how the MGS4 Limited Edition PS3 Hardware Bundle orders are going to work right now!

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT the previously revealed MGS4 Standard Edition 80GB PS3 bundle!

The MGS4 Limited Edition PS3 Hardware Bundle will be available exclusively from Konami.com, you can actually hit the link and “Wish List” it right now (hint, hint). The price is $599.99 and it comes with the Gun Metal Gray PLAYSTATION 3 system with a 40GB hard drive, the bundle also includes a matching DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Limited Edition game.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2038/2495687650_d2f7c09a74.jpg

The MGS4 LE game box contains: The Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots game, which includes Metal Gear Online, enabling you to take part in the ultimate multiplayer squad based tactical shooter. An exclusive Blu-ray disc including over 2 hours of additional content - “Hideo Kojima’s Gene”, a behind-the-scenes vision of Hideo Kojima’s production team & game and “The Making of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” documentary. As well as, the official Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots CD Soundtrack, including 16 never-before-released tracks by Harry Gregson-Williams (Shrek, Armageddon, The Rock), Nobuko Toda, and Ennio Morricone.

Pre-orders for the bundle will begin on Monday May 19th, 2008, and again, is in very limited supply. Only one per customer. We will be releasing limited quantities of stock day to day until completely sold out, so for notices about stock availability please stay tuned right here on the PS Blog and at Konami.com !

It's a shame that it's a 40 GB though...

I was thinking, is the background war sound generated in real time or is it pre-recorded?

I seem to remember Kojima talking about wanting real time "generated" sound and it does sound really engaging in the (short, too short to tell if there are loops) videos.

I remember Kojima wanting fully destructible environment, fully modeled bodily fluid systems and heart rate meter affecting adrenaline levels, endorphine levels and hence overall excitement level which affect your concentration and ability to shoot :)

I actually recall one enemy soldier making whizz in MGS2 :D And it was modeled ridiculously well.

As mentioned, Kojima is a perfectionist. If he gets a fixation he wants something done in a ridiculously meticulous way.

It's only matter of time, resources and energy of the development team what they can eventually achieve.

He's kept part of that in the new stress meter, though probably not as advanced as he originally hoped for.

He's kept part of that in the new stress meter, though probably not as advanced as he originally hoped for.

I guess he rather dropped it, because the players couldn't cope with it (i.e. it was too complex for "John Doe"), not because the system was too slow or somesuch (I could write such a system in Java^^ And I suck at Java!)

And about getting frozen in Colorado... I'd rather go to Switzerland in Winter, not that far from here^^

I don't think Kojima could ever be satisfied with technology. When new tech comes out, it inspires him to such an extent that he really pushes, in his mind, what could be done, and then has to cap the limits of what he can technically do.

Aaaaaaanddd...I've just confirmed that I'm going to be getting the MGS4 PS3 bundle.Lol definantly. If I get a lil extra money soon the MGS4 bundle will be mine.

Aaaaaaaaaanddd...With that post of yours (and yoshaw's), we pretty much confirmed MGS4 is a system seller.

I'm sick of waiting for it though.
I just got done waiting for GTA4 and now comes MGS4.

I'm going to love that monkey by the way, I hope Hideo doesn't kill him.Lol Definantly. And don't forget Pac4life's post aswell. And now mine ;). Theres been several games the have piqued my interest highly but MGS is THE game that'll make me take my broke ass out and buy a PS3 lol. No more excuses (yes...i'm still PS3less believe or not lol). And i'd imagine the droves of others who share the same sentiment. PS3 sales spike Ftw!!

Wow @ the new screens.. *wipes tear of joy from eye*

Man, $500 is a large amount of money. I really want to go out and get the MGS4 bundle when it arrives, but I also have college loans to think about...decisions...decisions...

LaLiLuLeLo
05-19-2008, 04:39 AM
Are you paying the loans at the moment?
If yes? I can empathize.
If not, go ahead and get the PS3/MGS4 bundle, because the loans will bone you no matter what you've set aside.
Promise.
Hold on...

Boned.
Dicked.
Cocked.
Fucked.
Screwed.

Yeah every expression for 'being in trouble' is a euphemism for being fucked with a penis.
Why is that???

I have a gift card to best buy for $80 and that will ease the pain alittle.

Best Buy should be getting the bundle. They'll probably even incorporate it with their usual "Buy this PS3 and TV for the same amount as the TV!" deal they usually have.

Well, it is a refurb display box PS3... I dunno how "used" that might be

But the price seems okayish for that. I don't know, what Ebay wants for a PS3 in the US though (in Germany, you can get "new" ones for a bit over 300€)

I hate this game. I went and pre-ordered it today and i dont even have a PS3 yet. Does anyone know if the MGS bundle is pre-orderable and when? When i was in Gamestop they mentioned that it wasnt up yet. If so, ill just go and switch the credit towards it since the bundle looks sick and is a great deal.

I wonder if the Metal Gear Solid series is gonna follow another character that's already established within the universe of MGS or if they are going make another character all together that we don't know. Probably just another rookie. =/

I don't think they will reuse anyone from the solid series. I am expecting all new...and personally I would rather have it end with 4 then a completely different game with the Metal Gear name WITHOUT Kojima-san on board. End it on a high.

Yeah I have it pre-ordered too and no PS3 yet. I am going to get the MGS4 bundle ps3 it comes out the same day as MGS4 the guys at gamestop said they would hold one for me. I plan on trading in the copy of the game it comes with and getting the Limited Edition.

Part of me thinks Raiden will be making a return, they seem to putting effort in to making people like him in MGS4, i would have thought they'd get rid of him if they just planned to start afresh.

I wouldn't mind seeing a clean slate though, it'd be interesting to see what the team came up with...

Kojima Is "Thinking" About Metal Gear Solid 5

Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't even out and whaddaya know, the game's creator Hideo Kojima is already thinking about Metal Gear Solid 5. While MGS4 was supposed to be Kojima's last entry the series, he seems to have had a change of heart recently. Isn't he ready to move on to other things? Dunno. What we do know is what he told Famitsu [*spoilers ahoy!*]:

I gotta start thinking about MGS5... Even though, well, Snake's story ends in MGS4.

...About MGS5, that would be something that Kojima Productions would have to make, I think.

Sounds like Kojima's at least considering doing Metal Gear Solid 5. If MGS4 is a hit, it'll be hard for him not to do it. And hey, if he actually does make MGS5, then he can think about making MGS6 after that!

Famitsu scan below.

Metal Gear Liquid 1?

P.S. I would be beyond ecstatic if he stays involved in the series....whatever it might be called.

Or something. Kojima has always been a thematic writer, and I am curious about what he has to say that he hasn't already said.

He should come back as a producer. Or maybe he likes insisting something is the last of a thing and changing his mind, forever condemning himself to a limbo of making the same title, just so everyone can make fun of him until his dying day, when MGS 14 is finally complete. :P
