Game Crazy & EB Games Fanboyism is out of control!

I just stopped by Game Crazy, because I was curious how they planned to take preorders for the PS3. I will give a recap of my visit to the location:

Nameless: What's up man, you guys taking preorders for the PS3?
Store Manager: No, first come first serve, people will have to camp...
Nameless: Are you going to at least tell the people camping how many units you have?
Manager: Not sure yet, I guess we will.
Employee: I'm going to sell my PS3 on Ebay.
Manager: Yeah we only have 4 employees and I plan to let each of them buy a console and I plan on selling mine on Ebay...
Nameless: Considering the launch is only 400K units your store will only get 4 or 5 units so I guess no consumer is buying one...
Manager: (sounds nervous) No we will sell some to the public.
Nameless: Right...
Nameless: I see you guys have a 360 demo running with NBA 2K7
(3 kid are playing the demo)
Manager: Yeah the game is bad ass.
Nameless: Yeah, I wonder if the game will be 1080P on the PS3?
Manager: 1080P gaming is impossible! (rambles some technical information that makes absolutely no sense.)
Nameless: What are you talking about, the PS3 already has games running at 1080P and 60 FPS.
Manager: I will have to see that it's technically impossible.
Nameless: You're wrong dawg, Ridge Racer is 1080P and was playable at TGS
Employee: The 360 will have 1080P.
Manager: Yeah, it will be an Xbox live downloadable update that makes all games 1080P.
Nameless: Even if there was an update it would only upscale the games to 1080P and there’s a difference between native 1080P and upscale. The only native 1080P would be movies on the 360. Also, the 360 does not have HDMI and most TVs do not support 1080P over component or VGA.
Employee: The 360 is releasing a cord that will allow HDMI
Nameless: It's not that simple man, there's no adapters for component to HDMI you can't turn an analog signal digital...
Manager: I know but the 360 supports VGA and that's a digital signal.
Nameless: Correct, but there's no VGA to HDMI adapter because VGA does not support an HDTV signal. The only plausible way for the 360 to offer HDMI is to release a new console and I would be pissed, because it would not support my 360.
Manager: I will have to look into what you are saying.
Nameless: I suggest you do, because you don't know what you are talking about.
Employee: All the PS3 games are going to the 360 anyway, I just heard that DMC4 & Resistance is going to the 360.
Manager: Yeah most games are jumping ship and now going to the 360.
Nameless: I could possibly see DMC4 going to the 360, but Capcom have made no announcements and I can tell you that Resistance will never go to the 360 it's a PS3 exclusive. :huh:
Manager: Ubisoft decided to move it's games to the 360...

I did find some parts funny, because these guys were idiots and I'm sure they thought I was trying to be a smart ass... ^Yeah Insomniac is an Independant company-they even said they could've worked on 360 but have a good relationship w/Sony and felt that the best games are made by working with one System. Insomniac is one of those 2nd party devs Sony has working with them. And I think they also support the WorldWide Studios too-I have to do some research on that tho.

Well i think the thing is they really did a quite good launch wordwide, miss with allocation to Japan instead of US. It was solid and the hardware was really really
exotic and hot to be released so early, they had about 4-5 quite solid titles also.

But its really nothing Sony could done about it because of blu-Ray.

Personally and this pisses me off is that the percent of yields that made the production start so late was probably because of some few %(much yen of course) on the Blu-Ray yield. I think they could eaten up that to give Europe the launch also.

If not they could IMO sent 200.000 units in 2 shipments at the cost of JP.
JP seems to get way to much strategically.

- Only the 60gb Ps3 can play PS2/PS1 games because thay are being run off the HDD
- The 20gb just has a DVD drive
- Games will have "subscription" fees

i'm lucky enough to be in a town that has an EB run by open gamers. not just fanboys or people needing a job.

alot of them are wanting the PS3 but not all of them are happy with the price. being in Australia, the delay for us has led to all of them to switch their pre-orders over to Wii. and they are fairly promoting Wii and 360 because those are the systems available for Christmas. i'm sure once PS3 gets an official date they will start promoting it too. although IMO, it wont sell all too greatly until the price drops and it wont fly off the shelves until the price halves. saying that however, it will still have alot of support especially towards the middle of its lifecycle.

This is not true. Insomniac is completely neutral, they just choose to make games strictly for Sony. Sony in return takes care of Insomniac. Neither are bound to each other.


Also I don't think EB games, Gamespot, or Gamecrazy are really pushing fanboyism, it more about selling what you have in stock instead of encouraging people to save their money for the system coming out in a few months in limited numbers.

I've heard a coworker say some real shit though, just here & there, whether it's about PS3 or Wii or whatever... the one that first comes to mind is that the told a customer the Wii won't be able to play DVD movies... *sigh*

I'd love to correct him and correct customers when they come in saying a bunch of bullshit, but it's not that easy, unfortunately. There are a ton of misinformed consumers out there, probably because of the misinformed employees out there who love to just say some shit... I personally try my best to explain what the PS3 has in it but most consumers have already heard the price tag and just scoff and want to tell me their unchanging opinion regardless of the facts... it's very frustrating :(

I've noticed that as well in Toronto, Canada as well.

I am guessing that a lot are quite passionate about the Xbox since it aim to cater the Western market a lot more. This is why we see the more 'extreme' type going all out to prove that the Xbox 360 is the console of next generation. Many of them don't want to lose their ownly 'Western'-centric console. Similarly people many feel that the Dreamcast catered gamers demand. The PS2 to them is a miss-and-hit type console while the DC has the RPGs, platform titles, the shooters, fighters, etc. The PS2 on the other hand while having a very diverse suite does not cover all the genres, such as FPS, vertical shooters, etc.

Those who purchased PS2 tend to prefer a diverse app suite probably because many members in their family use the console. Hence they need various genres available. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the Xbox owners purchased the console with their own cash. Parents are not going to by their 10 and 15 year old child/teen a console that only caters one of them. Xbox is quite a turn-off to children, mainstream gamers and those who love RPGs and platformers.

And when buying an product with your own money, you want to feel satisfied about your purchase. Even if requires you to change the opinion of others and unfortunately many choose to do that.

I agree with the premise of this thread by the way, save to say that the EBGames at the mall I go to in fact *has* started to paint the PS3 as the more powerful system when I've overheard conversations.

Which I find shocking.

The PS2 to them is a miss-and-hit type console while the DC has the RPGs, platform titles, the shooters, fighters, etc. The PS2 on the other hand while having a very diverse suite does not cover all the genres, such as FPS, vertical shooters, etc.

Those who purchased PS2 tend to prefer a diverse app suite probably because many members in their family use the console. Hence they need various genres available. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the Xbox owners purchased the console with their own cash. Parents are not going to by their 10 and 15 year old child/teen a console that only caters one of them. Xbox is quite a turn-off to children, mainstream gamers and those who love RPGs and platformers.

And when buying an product with your own money, you want to feel satisfied about your purchase. Even if requires you to change the opinion of others and unfortunately many choose to do that.I don't see how DC covered my genres than PS2:huh: It wasn't that PS2 had the most diverse games-it just had something for everybody that was good! A couple FPS's tried PS2 and partially succeded like Timesplitters and Red Raction-but after Xbox came it pretty much Owned the genre. It looks like this will change with PS3-and it looks like simple games like Flow will even develope into a new genre in itself.

My manager's getting back from a little managerial summit in Texas for Gamestop/EB managers where Nintendo & Sony were at, so we'll have preorder info this week, by Friday hopefully, and as soon as tomorrow :-D

I coulda swore the Wii could play DVD movies...no reason why it couldn't :-p Maybe Nintendo will catch up to that later since they're relatively new to the whole disc thing ;)

Anyways, yeah... like xbd said it's pretty pointless to discuss these things to people. Employees think they know tons of info and customers think they're always right, just like the saying goes. I had a guy come in today asking if the PS3 was really going to cost over 1 grand. Where the hell has this guy been and whom is he talking to!? I mention the PS3's launch lineup and all the games coming out post-launch, and I'm always sure to mention MGS4, and you'll always get that douchebag who says, "yah, but MGS is always like 90% cinemas LOL!!!" As much as I'd love to tell them how little they know about MGS and how much they can learn from me when it comes to MGS, customers like that also don't like to take advice or learn from an employee they've come to spout shit to...

I whitnessed a miracle. I went into Gamestop a few weeks back, and the manager was a sony fan. He did nothing but sing praises for sony and the PS3. He owned a 360, but said he would be selling it to fund the PS3. The other employee there was an xbot and was trying to downplay the PS3. It was hilarious the ridicule he got from the manager. But I have to say thats the only time that has happened in the thousands of times I've been to that store, and I think they fired that manager. JK.
