The PS3 looks amazing. i want it now! :[

+rep that was great.
That's what I like to hear:
1) It's quiet like a sleeping baby. A barely audible hum. With the TV on you simply can't hear it at all.
2) It's heavy like a planet. No, really. It's impossible to pick up with one hand.
3) It's shiny like a mirror. In fact, it's impossible to take a photograph of it without the flash spanging every picture into a starburst mess. And therefore it's massively prone to fingerprintage too, with the tiny amount of dust in the office magically attaching itself to its surface in seconds.
4) The PS3 joypad is very light and the tilt system is very responsive. We like.
5) The start up is amazingly fast. And game load times were faster than expected. In fact, PS3 does both at about the same speed of PSP. ie, Long load times due to the massive Blu-ray disc? Nope. Simply not an issue.
6) Andy's fingers kept sliding off the shoulder buttons. But that's because his fingers are slippery.
and more:
Things to note:
1) The speed the machine sucks the disc in. Wow!
2) The PS3 start up sound - it's like an orchestra tuning up. Cool.
3) The similarity between the PS3 interface and the PSP interface.
4) Watch out for the first recorded lifting of the PS3's flaps.
5) Listen out for the fact that Sony don't officially have a name for the 'PS' button in the middle yet.
6) And check out those flashing blue and green lights. Groovy.

Yeah im not suprised at the PS3 being heavy, it has the most up to date technology inside it lol.
5) Listen out for the fact that Sony don't officially have a name for the 'PS' button in the middle yet.
maybe that is the name? the PS button.
and yeah, I think everyone is pleasently surprise about how quite it is. to think that with all the power and circutry in it, it would sound like a vacuum. Sony does it like noone else. ;)

If you look at the comments that Dan G posted at the bottom, it says that this PS3 isnt their own PS3 but it is the final retail unit. And Sony reps said that they will have their own PS3 "in a fortnight." So no one really has the final retail unit of the PS3 yet, but it has been finalized and now its going into mass production. Coolio 8)
yeah, nice find Smurf. this is my very first 'here is a working PS3 for us to play with' footage I've seen. :)
it makes the whole PS3 myth believeable. lol

^Omni. i can help you. What about a direct-download for the video (http://www.psm3mag.com/resources/psm3/ps3startup.mov)?
BTW: The boot-up sound is only beaten by the original PSX, IMO... Ok,, that's it!! I'm importing!! Don't you dare try to stop me!!!
at the beginning of the video, there is a PS3 logo that appears. then the video of the guys start and their PS3 boot-up is different. so what was that first showing? isn't a different boot-up- like if you have/haven't got a BD dic in it, for example?

No, there's no such thing as "too quick". Years and years people have bitched and moaned about slow this and that, complicated this and that...
And now we get whining about it's too fast or the interface is sterile and boring. Folks, put a sock in it. We're getting what we asked for and then some, after chilling with an outdated console for 6 years.

No need, their word is more than enough. And if it that isn't enough, look at this:
1x Br = 2x DVD
So at the moment, the 2x drive in the BR drive is equivalent to maybe a 4x or 5x DVD drive. That would explain the slowish game bootup as well as the noise. BR uses a far larger laser aperture, so doesn't need to spin as fast. Factor in the trayless drive for decreased vibrations and you have a quiet machine.
Then there's the reports of it being liquid cooled, and the copious vents and is it any wonder? This thing is supposed to be the pinnacle of media convergence and no one wants to hear whirring while watching movies or enjoying pictures.

The X360 uses 12x DVD and 1x BD is way faster then 2x DVD. although, 2x BD is not as fast as 12x DVD.

No, it's not. Please, you're obviously playing dumb. How the hell is it "too fast"? There must obviously be a point of reference for you to word it like that.
It's not too fast at all, and as a matter of fact, it could be faster. This is a game console and if it means getting through the dashboard to the games sooner, so be it. I swear people will bitch about anything, even positives.

Ok, now I get you. I was flipping out, but even then, I'd like the animation shorter. It'll be nice the first dozen times waiting for 25-30 seconds, but then it gets old. Like flipping through oversized WMP blades and their accompanying animation.

Metal Sphere: not only a 2x BD drive has the theoretical maximum transfer rate of a ~7x DVD, but its transfer rate is constant while a DVD drive's isn't. A 12x DVD drive rarely ever transfers data at 12x: if it performs at an average of 9x, be thankful about it.

Why are you talking about transfer rates? I simply pointed out why even running games the PS3 would be quieter than the 12x drive in the 360. I wasn't disagreeing with any of you.
And it's 1x BD = 2x-2.5 DVD (not 3x). Even if it's a little slow, it's got the hard drive helping too.

And it's 1x BD = 2x-2.5 DVD (not 3x). Even if it's a little slow, it's got the hard drive helping too.1x BD = 36 Mbps
1x DVD = ~11 Mbps
Therefore, a 2x BD (constant) transfer rate is equivalent to a ~7x DVD (maximum theoretical) transfer rate.
Anyway, the HDD will really come in handy.

That said, I thought the 12x is only for DVD5 though, there have been discussions regarding whether 12x DVD actually reads DVD9 at 12x instead of just 8x, which would drive the average speed even further down.

The second layer one any disk reads slower, but that would mean a PS3 game would have to be over 25GB before that to be a problem.

The guy reached forward at first to put the disc in and then another mentioned they should just see the XMB thing. After they had finished looking through it, at 0:40 the first guy puts it in (you can see the arm reach over) and a quick noise, and then it showed up on the screen.
BTW, Carlos, thank you for dredging up a resolved discussion. The fact of the matter is, when it comes to UIs, the faster and more responsive you can make it, the better. But I'm sure once there are telepathic interfaces, someone will whine that it's too fast.
