They do, but if it is five times the price of a DVD it still isn't a factor....
and that's in Japan where big games normally sell for $80 and average games for little moe than $50. I expect the same pricing as current games. some publishers may try with $60 and what not. but I say vote with your wallets people!

Very nice find. Looks like first party PS3 games will sell a lot. I wonder what will happen with third parties though.

New PS3 Game Prices (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/736/736935p1.html)
Lower-than-expected prices at PS3 launch.
by Anoop Gantayat
October 3, 2006 - Sony Japan decided to make clear its full launch plans for Japan today, with a set of accessory announcements and final pricing details for the system's launch titles. While Japanese game prices tend to have little to do with their US counterparts, there's been some concern that PS3 game prices would be on the high end, so it's worth taking a look. All prices include 5% consumption tax.
PS3 launch game prices range from the unexpectedly low to the slightly higher than expected. At the low end are two mahjong games. Konami will release Mahjong Fight Club National Competition Edition at 5,229 yen. This is slightly higher than Koei's Mahjong Taikai IV, which will sell for 5040 yen. The Koei title is, incidentally, a new entry to the PS3's Japanese launch lineup.
In the next bracket are two Sony Computer Entertainment titles. Both Resistance and Genji will carry a price point o 5,980 yen. As these are full games, most were expecting a price of at least 7,140 yen, which is the standard tax-included price for current generation games.
Sega's launch title, Sega Golf Club, has been priced at 7,140 yen, as previously reported. So has Sonic the Hedgehog, which hits Japan on 12/21 at 7,140 yen.
Finally, we come to the high end of the launch lineup. Ridge Racer 7 and Gundam Target in Sight will both carry price points of 7,329 yen. This is actually the price that Konami charges for most of its PS2 games.
From Software will follow launch with the highest priced PS3 game of them all. As previously reported, Armored Core 4 will hit Japanese retail on 12/14 carrying, a price point of 8,190 yen. PS2 Armored Core games have carried this price in the past.
We'll stress once again that these prices may or may not be reflective of their US counterparts. Stay tuned for US pricing details as the US launch approaches.

Fazares,
I've noticed this with you a lot. I wonder if its a hidden agenda you carry. Since you keep reading out of context things PS3 related. And here, without paying attention to the parts where it says current-gen versions of said games sell for the same price. Which is a testament/compliment to ps3 games being sold at same price. If you can't see that, it's really unfortunate.
oh, he can see that of course. but where can he get his kicks if he admited it?

I bet it will be just like the 360.
First Party games 50$
Third Party Games 60$
If the ps3 and 360 have roughly the same development costs, why would a publisher charge less on one console then the other? Also with the way some 360 games are selling at 60$ I doubt many companies would want to change back to 50$.
I can see first party titles being 50$, but unless Sony helps subsidize the cost of development I believe third party titles will be 60$.
Though I wish all games were 50$. Maybe in a few years when it doesnt cost as much to create games on these consoles?
Still though, better then the 70$ price I remember paying in the past for games.

Pretty reasonable.
I take it the 50 USD figure is for first party games???

Nice, I can handle a $50 price tag especially when I can remember paying $80 for SuperMan 64 (one of the worst investments ever).

I'm kicking myself now for not posting this a several weeks back. I figured everyone knew this already since we already had a topic on it. If memory serves correctly, it was before the Japan announcement (quite expensive over there) went public.
cheers for bring it to those who were not informed.

Awesome. I'm glad Sony is pricing both Genji and Resistance reasonably. Obviously they can't really control what third-party publishers price their games but as usual they're leading by example. ~_~

Ha, ha...thats beautifal. Great news. Hopefully it'll carry over to u.s. (which i'm sure it will). I wouldn't be suprised if it was just 1st part games..but considering the amount of good Sony 1st party games i'll definantly take that price.

Resistance and Genji (pictured) will be sold at 5980 yen ($50). The company also confirmed that MotorStorm (December 7th) will be sold at the same price. There had been some speculation in Japan that Sony might be tempted by a price closer to the equivalent of $60; roughly what third parties will be looking for in the U.S and Japan.
Sega announced a week ago that two of its titles will go on sale for 7140 yen ($60): Sega Golf Club (launch) and Sonic the Hedgehog (December 21st). Other third parties have announced higher pricing for their titles.
