It seems to me that this forum is made up of two distinctive personalities. Which are You:
1) those individuals that thrive on tech info and hunger for numbers. they can't sleep until everything is bolted down and screwed tighter than a gnats ass. they use varying codes and symbols that resemble hieroglyphics and can work out pi at the blink of an eye. their knowledge intimidates those that have never worked with code (such as me) but secretly they impress the hell outa me, even though what they are saying could be total s**t.
2) those individuals that sit hunched at their keyboards refreshing the page time and again, just in case VG or Yoshaw has posted another vid (usual the same one but this time in 100,000,000p) they chat in a less formal way and may sometimes veer of topic because someone mentioned they had a great avatar. they argue about textures and poly counts and FR because it sometimes convinces others that they may fit into the first category (ME! LOL)
Games or Numbers. what matters most?

You're forgetting Yoshaw and me's personalities ;)
Anyway, the games are almost all for me. Almost.

I would be number 2, I care about the numbers, but if I never learn the complete and total specs of the RSX down to what every transistor is doing, I wouldn't care at all.....
Show me FF, MGS, and Twisted Metal and that's all I ask.....Now if they would just release the next Twisted Metal.

I think this 'two types' thing is too limiting. There are definitely many more than just those two types described.

yeh, i'm with you on this one. i like to see specs sometimes, but the actual game and bot its technicalities is what really floats my boat. this is a serious question by the way.

i knew someone would call me on this XB, but for the sake of simplicity and a chance for some to talk about the grey areas, these two question suffice... i think... ye?

bit off both, both things interest me, but not to an extent of crazyness
Um...neither?
I'm a bit of an oddity, I guess. I became interested in the PS3 because of its Blu-Ray capabilities (gasp!). I found the forum looking for more info, and now I come back regularly to lurk and find out the latest info. I don't post much, because I don't have anything useful to say - you guys know waaaaay more than I ever will about this stuff.
Hmm, tech specs? Don't really care about them, mildly interesting but I figure the console will kick ass.
Games? Uh...last console I had was a Sega Genesis. Do a few PC games, but the last one I bought was Doom 3. I don't recognize any of the ones you talk about. But I'm getting pretty revved to try them on the new console.
Nah, I'm one of the ones that is interested in the total media (BD, DVD, SACD, networked media, and games). I'll buy it if it's a good BD player, and then having the games is just added sweetness. Yea, I'm the one you guys don't think exists! (lol)

I'd say I'm number 2. I would love to contribute more, but I get all my news from here, I don't know how the other guys do it and post it here so fast. And I'm just not very interested in final specs. I'm no MILR

So would you say (as you seem very casual and not a 'hardcore' gamer...hardly a gamer in fact lol) that Sony PS3 appeals to you more than Nintendo Wii?
As a non-gamer do you at all care about Nintendo Wii?
I am asking this because I am very curious to Nintendo's strategy. How are they planning to expand the gaming industry when all they do on their console is games?
I think that's a wrong way to look at it. As you can see PS3 gets some attention as a cheap Blu-Ray player and even if that is the sole reason someone bought it, sooner or later they might think "Hmm, since this PS3 does a lot, I might as well give one game a go" and then might become a gamer.

im into technolog i guess. i like seeing whats going to happen in the future, indications of what technology is going to be doing for us 5 or 10 years down the track. my interest in video games has worn off since i was younger - i find it takes a really good game to hold my attention, and love cars so thats basically why i still have some sort of interest - i definately am not into it as much of a lot of the other guys here. (unfortunately!)
i think thats the main reason i started visiting this forum, and then, some 6 months later, became a member - by visiting this board, i could see what was going to happen in the future (that, and there seemed to be a lot less mentally deficient people here than there was on other boards).
i don't have much of a technical streak - i like specs, numbers, datasheets, but i don't understand most of it. i find that if i'm given info that i don't understand, i'll serach the internet and find out for myself if i really want to. you dont need a cutting edge computer, or a "gaming" mouse, or a "gaming" keyboard, or "gaming" speakers, or a "gaming" mouse pad to search the net and find out the information you want ;)

I think then I would put in number one, but obviously not everyone fits exactly in one or the other.

I don't care at all about the Wii. It really seems like a gimmick to me, one that I think will wear out after a bit of time. *shrug* Only my opinion.
And for me, the PS3 represents more than just a cheap Blu-Ray player. I've bought in to the concept that this thing can be the center of the entertainment system in the home. If I understand right, the PS3 will take the place of a computer in several functions associated with the A/V system, like MP3, movie storage (and maybe purchase), etc. And I use my computer in the office, not by the TV. The PS3's place is...by the TV.
You'd never know it, but I'm definitely a gamer - but I don't play much because when I do, I play too much. Ultima 6 nearly caused me to fail out of college at one point. I'm a lot older than most of this crew, I bet, and I can't play a lot and stil maintain everything else I have going. Still, I'm excited to hear about the games, and reading here lets me know which ones to get when I do take the plunge.

When I have my PS3 infront of me I will be 90% about the games. However, right now since I don't have a PS3 and you can only look at the same trailers so many times I find myself having more than enough time to try in a futile effort to hunt down specifications.
I'm not an expert so I don't fit into the first category. But since I can't play the games yet I'm trying to do the next best thing by learning how the games are being made, and also the hardware that my games will be played on.

You forgot the third category. That's the type that only view this forum once a day, looking for the latest information on PS3. And doesn't really care about the numbers, knowing that the PS3 is superior already. What they want is information on the latest games and PS3.

I'm somewhere in the middle, probably 1.75.
Yeah, numbers are fun. I like the irony in knowing *my* system is more powerful than xbox-loving friends (and my brother who called the PS2 a "rock and chisel" compared to the xbox), and me not really giving a shit so long as it plays FFXIII.
But the games, boy. The games! That's why we all bought a PlayStation in the first place. Did anybody give a shit about rumble and "ZOMG IT'S ON A HIGHER DEFINITION FORMAT IT WILL FAIL LOL" back then? No!

thank Indie +rep. there is a serious point here though. if you take a look at my 'preemptive strike' thread you will see that a lot of techies were saying that 1080p at 60fps wouldn't be an issue and that most games would run at 30fps or 60fps at 720p because they are hung up on numbers. were as we dreamers seem to have got it right... strange that, isn't it. i came to my conclusion based on the capacity of blu-ray and Sony's insistence that PS3 would herald in a new era of next gen gaming. it was inevitable and yet numbers blinded even the most savvy techies. we also know that devs do read forums to find out what we the players want from a game, again those techies insisted that this was ridiculous and basically ridiculed both myself and MILR for suggesting such a thing...
i was surprised at MILR debacle on the 1080p issue, born out by his 720p sweet spot thread. i myself am pretty confident that, although sometimes i play devils advocate, most of what i say is based on intelligent speculation and not just blind hope...
