Famitsu runs a hardware preview too with a comparison with the old PS2. The disc / power button is not an actual button. It's a thermo sensor that senses finger temperature

That thermo thing sounds pretty cool to me. I hope that the PS3 not make weird things when the temperature in my room goes high. :-D

I like the design from this console so much.^^

I have a very similar switch on my Apple G4 Cube. :)

It works by light though, not heat.

Wow when I seen the ps3 and the ps2 standing next to each other I thought, "hey not bad" that was until I seen its width. :) O well ya get what you pay.

A thermal button sounds like some sweet geek tech. I would love a shot of the PS2/PS3 controllers analog sticks to see how much farther the PS3's sticks come out.

WAIT A DAMN MINUTE! If the PS3 controller connects via usb to charge, does that mean I could use it to play on my computer? If the correct drivers *cough hacks cough* are released by someone on the internet of course. That would be pretty sick.

Yup, I'd say you're correct. Free USB PC gamepad with every purchase.

Lots of laptops come with Bluetooth too. Free wireless PC controller?

Could be nice if Sony made a PS3 inside a TV lol like they did 4 years ago with the PS2.
SO you could just by a brand High end TV with inside it a PS3.
There was a pic but I can't find it anymore, a big tv with a PS2 down to it, but built in it , with tekken tag on screen.

Old news

Sony to Put Playstation 2 Chips Inside TVs

Continuing with Sony's announcements, NE Asia brings word that the company plans on using Playstation 2 chips inside of new flat panel TVs to be introduced this Fall. This announcement has confused many as it counters what Mr. Playstation himself, Ken Kutaragi, stated in an interview during September of last year - that "it is not the time for those rocks (PS2 chips) to be going inside of televisions." Maybe he's changed his mind in a year?

All we can do for now is speculate, but the prospect of a TV with integrated PS2 is sweet. For now, however, the chips "will improve the TV's image processing capability." Damnation

And If I remember they will put Cell in tvs next year as well, and maybe their great ideal about the " grind computing" could be real lol.

wait a sec. does this mean I can't turn it on/off with my fake leg like I always do? *thinks how to wire a heater to fake leg*
Wow when I seen the ps3 and the ps2 standing next to each other I thought, "hey not bad"
when I saw them next to each other, I gut a smile on my face and mix emotions. side by side, PS2 starts looking 'old'. you see quick game flashes of your best times on it. and for a moment there, it seams to be handing the tourch to the new king.
I got the same feelings when I saw PS2 right next to my beloved PSOne. slowly, PSOne started to disappear. remembering all the sleepless nights playing on it, the long hours, the tournament chills, the bragging rights, victory dances, the disappointment of defeat, the great game endings,...everything. I also feel a sense of joy knowing I'll be experiencing new moments and joys. and things can only get better.

God I love gaming so much! (and anime!)

Oh wow....

OK, it seems I have underestimated Sony yet again. I did not see touch sensitive buttons heading to the console at all; it just seemed too expensive and easily damaged.

However, it seems the lights in the back of the controller DID represent the USB ports and most likely, I'm assuming, not the BlueTooth, wireless controllers.

hold on a sec; if the lights on the pad were USB connection indicators, that means PS3 still accepts 7 controllers via bluetooth. once we say the 4 lights on the back, some thought the number of controllers supported was cut down to 4.

could anybody confirm PS3 'still' supports 7 bluetooth controllers + USB ones?

NBA 2k7 supports 7 controllers. In a video of the gameplay they go to the controller select screen and 7 are listed. I would post a link but it's not letting me due to post count. Video is on gamevideos.com called NBA 2K7 'Shaky Cam' PS3 gameplay

Exactly! I'm thinking there are just way too many connections/BlueTooth devices to really give you a accurate reading. Therefore, developers are such are having to introduce these wireless connections through the games content or other related software.

nice find TEEDA, +rep!

i love the idea of the thermal sensor, i will have lots of fun with it (ps3 goes on. ps3 goes off, ps3 goes on....)

I have to say, i really really like the look of the console it looks, stylish, smooth, sophisticated, futuristic and hi-tech, I now think that sony from the start knew that the ps3 would be expensive so their award winning style will have to sell it for them, and it will!

Z
10-06-2006, 02:59 AM
okay, are the color of the lights orange? I think I saw a pic showing one of them lit and it was blue. am I mistaken about that? or were those for the initial unvieling of the pad and were changed in the final hardware?

I am asking for the posibility of different colors indicating different connection methods.

easy: you lick it and it'll turn you on..I mean turn itself on.

what I do want to know is that if I used an object like a pen or eraser, will it still shut down?

nah, they couldn't make it that sensitive. you can't have consoles shutting on and off by thereselves. ;)

I seriously doubt that. Think of it as the ipod. I'm not sure if you tried this before but if you were to place a nonorganic object, perhaps a cloth, over your hand and touch the pad (even tap it), it will not trigger the touch pad. However, by using your bare hand, you could simply graze you finger across this touch pad at it very lightest, and it will activate it.

My trackpad on my laptop is the same way, and it has never been affected by ambient heat that I have been able to notice, either.

masonite

yeh, the touchpad on my laptop is the same. even if you use your fingernail, it still won't detect it - it really has to be your fingertip. at least it means that accidental turn-offs are reduced.

[edit]
hang, on, fingernail does work, but not well. probably has to be close to body temperature. paper over fingertip works, rubbing pen until its room temperature doesn't work. I get the feeling it also may be area - if it's a really small point, nothing will register, but if, say, a 5mm square area is touched, then the contact is registered. it could also be a similar system to the ps2 - you have to touch it for a full second or so.

i'm not looking forward to the fingerprints all over the cover of my piano black ps3 though...

hey, you're right! *giggles*. well what do you know. I never noticed that before. even my fingernails don't work. lol

you will only b touching the eject and power buttons (or should I say 'sensors').

How can you turn it off by foot on accident? It would be easier to turn it off by foot now.

Z
10-06-2006, 09:29 PM
I think you can still turn PS3 off with your foot by accedent.
the good nes is that this time, the power and eject buttons aren't on the outside as they were on PS2. ;)

that or wear socks. lol

Say the four and the three lit up, you have three.

The four and the one? Yep, five:P

yeah, i always wear my shoes or socks, so it doesn't seem you could turn it off now. but i prop my feet up on the shelf that holds my ps2 cause it's just a couple feet from my chair, and i've hit the rest button a couple times. my brother did at least once too. it's annoying.

lol

Anyway, first off that thing is huge.

2nd off im happy that there are actual triggers on the controller....One thing that will make FpS's awesome on it.

I really want a PS3 but will have to wait for price drop:(

By my reckoning... its about 1.5x deeper than the PS2

I think they picked it because they wanted to try out the very first PS2 games to see if they are compatible. plus, Japanese like fun games and what lighter hearted game is there on PS2 that early. :)

PS. I always wanted to try it but never did.
