Trying to install nVidia drivers once again and get direct rendering running.
The very first time i installed it i was in run mode 3.
Everything went fine and then i put in startx, which started the x server
IT told me about not using root in a gui so i logged out
changed to run mode 5 and logged into my account.
Tested out glxgears and it ran really smoothly
Installed mandriva's 3D desktop and it gave me the option of using GLX
IT then said I had to log out for changes to take effect.
I accidentally pressed restart, no big deal
I get back to mandriva and 3D desktop doesn't work. Checked grep info and direct rendering was off. And I wasn't entirely convinced the graphics card was running
Reinstalled mandriva
Tried some stuff but glxgears now runs choppy all the time but even at full screen reports framerates of +100fps
Reinstalled serveral times and had no luck.
This time I have installed X11 7.1.0 as I noticed they weren't installed when looking through the rpm installer. I found out about the new beta nvidia driver and decided to try it instead.
All previous times i resintalled mandriva I didnt wipe my home drive and I had a kernel source installer. I'm not sure if I downloaded the right one. It may have been i586 but I need i686.
Anyway, I can only find 1 site with kernel source 2.6.17.5 for x86_64
http://rpms.mandrivaclub.com/rpms/mandriva/devel//2007.0/x86_64/media/main/release/kernel-source-2.6.17.5mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.x86_64.html
And every time I try to run the rpm it says
unable to register rpm file
(followed by)
error registering local packages
I tried downloading it serveral times, with firefox and konquer
I tried downloading the i585 version but got the same message
I tried the stripped version which I think is what I had every other time I installed the drivers but got the same message
Is there anywhere else I can get the kernel source
or is this some problem with my system?

sounds liek youare trying to get a lot running and have run into multiple issues.
First and foremost, if you were able to start an X desktop your card is working.
Maybe not on an nvidia driver(possibly a generic driver), but it is running nonetheless.
Unless of course you have two video cards for which only one works.
The only thing I could recommend that woudl be easier.....just install SuSE.
10.1 is free, comes with all the packages and there is plenty of documentation for gettign it to work. Novell did help get the whole project on the ground running.

Hardware Advisory
The following graphics hardware is known to work well or recommended for use with XGL. Please add exceptions if there are any.
* Intel
All intel graphics chips need the newest packages of Xgl and compiz for running flawlessly.
o i915, i945
Accelerated XVideo is broken on these cards. See Troubleshooting.
* NVidia
All NVIDIA cards need the proprietary driver for running Xgl. Currently you will need to uninstall and reinstall the xgl rpm after installing the proprietary NVidia driver.
o GeForce 4xxx series
XVideo is not accelerated on these cards.
o GeForce FX 5xxx series, Quadro FX series
Accelerated XVideo is hitting a slow path on these cards, it is under investigation.
o GeForce 6xxx series
o GeForce 7xxx series
* ATI
o Mobility Radeon 9700 SE: Xgl running with proprietary fglrx driver 8.23
o Radeon X300: Xgl running with proprietary fglrx driver 8.23
If you are not sure what card you are using, you can run the following command (as root): hwinfo --gfxcard *thats a SuSE command*
If your card isn't listed then you can check out the Gentoo hardware list as well.

Looks like I'm switching to suse over the weekend.
As far as I can tell the only way to get Nvidia graphics running fully on mandriva is to pay for their own driver.
Thanks!

Forgot about the whole thing till Tuesday. Downloaded Suse 10.1
Installed Suse yesterday with Gnome.
Mouse started going choppy for some reason
Started again installed KDE instead. It's smooth now. I want to go back and use Gnome because I think it looked a bit better but anyway thats not the point
During the boot D-BUS daemon fails to start
Apparmour fails to start
During the install when testing my network card it gave "Interface not avalible" error.
It also says there is a sound card detected and it gives the name of the sound driver being used but there is no sound either.
The main thing is the internet because if that works I can sit at that computer and fix things but when the internet is down I have to move every 2 minutes
I cant find anything about it on the net
:mad::mad: Theres loads of fatal messages too. ACPI fails, im not sure what exactly, Is there a way I can recall all the things that show during boot?
EDIT:
Fatal : could not load lip/modules/2.6.16.21-0.35-default/modules.dep : no such file or directory
iptables v1.3.5 can't initialise iptables table 'filter' iptables 'who' (do you need insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be updated
Master resource control : runlevel 5 has been Done
Failed services in runlevel 5: acpid resmgr
skipped services in run level 5: irq_balancer smbfs nfs microcode
Thats what I get by doing telinit 3 just after logging on. Those seem to be the last few messages before x server starts. The fatal repeats itself a large number of times

YaST is the gui you want to configure everythign(like the network card)
You may need a driver, depending on you PC
Did you build it, is it a certain brand, etc.?

I built it myself but the ethernet & audio are integrated with my nforce4 motherboard
I think I have it figured.
After the install Suse didnt install a boot loader.
My bootloader from Mandriva kept coming up. To get suse to load I used the DVD. Now I figured out that the version of the kernel running is running from the 2.6.16.21-0.35-default but all the network things (I installed the latest drivers from nvidia) have installed into 2.6.16.21-0.35-smp.
I thought the best way to fix this is probably to use a bootloader because I know that when I have had kernel updates in the past, they have been added to the boot loader so I'd have to look into it. I remembered seeing a Boot loader option on YaST so I opened it up.
Not understanding the grub syntax I let it create the menu.lst itself and installed it. Now on boot I get: Grub geom error
I think I may have configured it wrong or it might need manual configuration.
Because I have a small scsi drive that has Windows XP on it, I have to install windows with just that drive connected then connect the other drive so that the boot loader goes onto the scsi drive. I dont know if I should be installing the new boot loader on the scsi or the IDE or if I should leave the hdd boot order with hda (ide) first or sda (scsi) first in the YaST configuration
EDIT:
I got everything working :D
Even compiz with a hack. Everything started working once I got grub working, and for that I had to change the boot priority in the bios and install grub again. I reinstalled with gnome, installed grub, installed the nforce drivers, downloaded the nvidia geforce driver and installed, used a hack to get compiz working, tested sound, everything works. Thanks dude +rep (gotta spread some rep first)
