Exclusive GTA IV content for PS3, too (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=68768)

Microsoft could barely contain its glee at being able to confirm exclusive downloadable content for next year's Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV - but PS3 fans need not fear, as it seems the Sony release is also firmly in line to receive its very own dazzling additions.
According to a source close to Rockstar North, the team is working on exclusive supplemental content for both systems, which will be made available for download via Microsoft and Sony's respective online services after the game's release next year.
In case you missed it, Microsoft revealed at X06 that Xbox 360 owners will get "exclusive access to two downloadable, epic episodes of GTA IV via Xbox Live, each with hours of entirely new gameplay and available only on Xbox 360 just months after the release of the title".
We're told to expect much the same deal on PS3, except unique to the platform. Interestingly, the downloadable content, our source maintains, will take the form of brand new areas which will link into the main GTAIV game world.
"Think of the world as a large island - the new downloadable areas will be like smaller islands linking into it," the source explained. (Which is a structural analogy, rather than a suggestion that the game is set on an island, we hasten to add.)
How many additional areas or episodes Rockstar is planning is anyone's guess at this juncture, but it seems the game is at least being structured to accommodate a number of expansive new content releases in the weeks and months after release, while also satisfying platform holder - and console owner - demand for exclusive material.
Though with 'exclusive' being a somewhat elastic term these days, especially where Grand Theft Auto is concerned, we wouldn't be remotely surprised if you end up playing 'exclusive' 360 episodes on your PS3, and vice versa. One thing's for sure - there's nothing more certain to piss off the fanboys than a level playing field.
No formal response from Rockstar at the time of writing. But, as ever, don't expect official word until they're good and ready.
Grand Theft Auto IV is scheduled to release on Xbox 360 and PS3 in the US on 16th October 2007, with Europe getting hold of it just three days later.
Well, I expected this :-p

I'm more interested in how the game will look and play on each system-but this was pretty expected. Rockstar isn't gonna shaft Sony after the success of GTA on PS2 consoles. I'm sure Rockstar wants to do a another really huge game-with Blu-ray they can accomplish so much more-I only hope the game isn't affected by it's simultaneous multiplatform release. I don't want any extra HD movies or commentary from the developers just to fill up the Blu-ray. Instead of making everything downloadable later on-just have seperate teams working on the two versions and see what they come out with. This probably isn't gonna happen:-(

Something told me there was a catch to that. I guess I was too focused on whether is was timed exclusive or not or on the Blu Ray disc itself. It seems neither. Good news, though.

Is it just me, or I am the only one who thinks this is ****ing stupid? There shouldn't be exclusive content for either system, both games on both systems should both have the same downloadable content. When I get GTA IV I want to play everything that GTA IV has to offer. I don't want this I have to buy another console and another version just to get the whole experience of the game bull****.
F*** you Rockstar, way to continue the march of games into downloadable garbage oblivion. What the **** is the point of exclusive content when both systems get exclusive content. At least I'd understand more of the business sense if the content was only for 1 console, even if I would still dislike it. But 'exclusive content' for each system? What kind of crack job is this?
Why is everyone praising R*, just because we get exclusive content like MS does? We're not in some ****ing race with MS you know, when we purchase games, we should get the whole deal, not half of it. R* is sucking like crap with this scheme of exclusive content, **** them.

1) R* gets more money by releasing extra content which has to be purchased separately, regardless whether there could be enough room in the disc or not to include this content.
2) By releasing some content later instead of including everything straight away, they're probably able to release the game sooner.
R* loves making money (duh), and microtransactions are going to be common in the coming years, so...

@curryking: Hmm come down. I mean better both system have some extra content as just one. For example i cant purchase a 360 AND a PS3 but i must have a PS3 just because of the exclusive games. So im happy that i get some extra content too. :)

Exactly venomv, and they're making it too obvious. I really think this idea of separate exclusive content for each system is a bad idea, I'm suprised no one agrees with me.
With the thing when I said, the whole game at first, I mean the retail game should be competent. I have no quarrel with having extra content after, I want that badly, expands a game for sure, but to have dif. content heading to different systems is just plain retarded to me, that's a disrespect to the consumers who purchased your game, to not offer everything you are intending to create for the game.

^Yeah u gotta point there mate-but Rockstar has never been an exclusive developer-they have to spread the love around both platforms. Instead of talking about exclusive content-how about Ranting on the issue of Blu-ray/Cell advantages that most multiplatform games aren't taking advantage of. Honestly-I would rather have a PS3 version come after the 360 version if they could make a bigger game on PS3. This sucks more to me than any exclusive extra content. Then again-GTA has sucked to me since Vice City-lol!!! It'll be a big game man-just relax

O jeez, lol, I'm sorry if I sounded THAT angry guys, I just wanted to type it like that to raise my point lol! San Andreas was great btw, Vice City was definitely the pinnacle even if SA did have most things done to a great extent and more things to do in the world. 'Examples of the Greatness of VC' the sound of guns, the soundtrack, the 80s vibe, and that was enough to kill any other GTA already.
I agree Omni, if GTA was being made for the PS3 in mind, we would see a much larger, more detailed, and interactive game world.
But seriously, this downloading extra content was supposed to be a great thing to elongate the lifespan of a game. Don't only give me the option to get only 1/2 of that extra lifespan, I want the option to get the whole extension of the game, because after all, I did plunk $80 CAD for your game.

I agree Omni, if GTA was being made for the PS3 in mind, we would see a much larger, more detailed, and interactive game world.
^Yeah it would-but just look at Resistance and it's scope. It's a launch game and it's a FPS-which technically doesn't have to be that large. So we may not see it in GTA-but I'm sure there's gonna be that game that's like 50gigs and the first 35% of the game is as large as Oblivion!!! Just like with every Playstation console, there's always a different "BIG" game that comes out. Tomb Raider for PS. GTA for PS2. And I think we can expect something knew for PS3 as well. The tech is there. The brand is there. The support is there. The demand is there. (whew-thank goodness for TGS...) all we have to do is wait. Early indications that the big PS3 game is gonna be something else besides GTA-is the amazing scope these games are producing. I think White Knight Story's potential is even larger than GTA's-particularly in Japan...

10-18-2006, 01:50 AM
It's cool that you mentioned White Knight to be that game as well. Just from that trailer you could get the feeling that White Knight was going to be one massive game, and not only that. It seemed to include that "nowhere else but here" feeling with the way the characters interacted and the battles played out, so fluid and movie like. I so wish that R* just decided to make GTA a PS3 exclusive. Like it wouldn't have affected they're profit margin that much anyways, they sell like 13 million each on the PS2 and then about 1.5 million on the Box last gen. R* could've made an even more insane game with GTA IV if they didn't go multiplatform and made the nearly the same amount of money, or possibly even more, because they would have driven PS3 sales out of the roof again like GTA III did in it's time.

I think to make GTA feel fresh again is to make the game not simply 2 parts. Mission based and the other part do something else like find oyster shells.
To make the next GTA fresh... hmm.. They really got to do something about the linearity of the mission structure. Somehow, they have to take the freedom of the objective-less part of the game and add that into the storyline and mission structure.
Here's one idea that just popped into my head. You remember those single missions where it was destroy the Crack Den/Blow up manufacturing plant? Instead, I think they should make it destroy the Crack DenS/manufacturing plantS.
Maybe there should be a network of them, there would be smaller and larger ones. Instead of the mission taking you to one single crack den, telling you exactly how to destroy it, they should task the player with destroying a network of dens. 3 small dens, and 1 middle sized one, and one really big one. All the while you'll be able to save DURING THE MISSION, because it's no longer a mission, it's more like an objective that multiple missions are a part of, so while you can still do whatever you want, you are actually still in the process of some objective, which you can go to anytime without having to visit a red marker before attacking every individual area. Also, maybe if you destroy the smaller crack dens first, the bigger one may be easier to attack because the business has been hit so much, but if you hit the biggest one first, it'll be harder, but then the smaller ones will be a joke to take care of.
Also, multiple ways to reach objectives is something unheard of in GTA games, other than driving, flying, or biking there, there was not really any other options that made sense. Stealth? Not very well inputted into the game except for the specific levels it was intended for. Options should always AT LEAST include busting open the doors like we're used to, and secondly, steathily going in with a disguise or something like hiding in a truck that goes to X place at X time every day, and then more things that can be found as part of dif. types of missions.
Ok, I'm going too in depth with my ideas here, but I hope you get the point. To make GTA fresh again, it has to make the missions not feel like missions anymore. They said they'd do that with SA, but they lied. The game has to give you an overarching objective that requires you to go to multiple places and make it feel like you are choosing where to go first, and also give you a choice on how to achieve X little step in the overarching objective, and have each miniature part of the objective affect other miniature segments in the objective. That would be next gen gameplay.

^ I really like your 2nd idea and with the increased AI it should be possible on the Next-gen consoles. I like the idea of watching someone's routine and potentially assuming their identity to perform a task. It reminds me of Hitman a little and that would be cool IMO. I know Rockstar will stick with the missions structure, but they need to do a better job creating complex interesting missions, because eventually I always lose interest and stop playing after 25 to 30 hours of play. The GTA series is not structured like an RPG which keeps a gamers attention for 80 hours of play... Perhaps they can expand on the create a player feature and character development, they scratched the surface with GTA SA. Peace

Yes CurryKing-Don't remind me of what "could've been" if GTA was exclusive. To be honest tho-I just thought it would be a easy way to get more PS3's out there and I definitely want that to happen so people other than myself can experience just how amazing this box is. But just like Nameless said-I think many hardcore gamers aren't buying GTA anymore. It's the game that your mommy and daddy don't want you to have. That's the image this game has taken-and I doubt it's gonna change. Expect a surprise-like Warhawk or White Knight Story or even FF13 to really put PS3 on the map like PS2. Almost every genre has an opportunity to set the PS3 on fire! And we can't forget about Naughty Dog and Insomniac-and more specifically Killzone-I think it has the strongest name in Sony's WorldWide Studios right now. It would be foolish for Sony not to make it something special..

Omnicloud, good points, even though I think GTA will still sell like crazy, it might, but it also might dwindle a bit for the reasons you made. I can definitely see some of these new IPs hitting the public from left field and catching on fire with sales. I would definitely say Killzone has the most potential to do something like this, let's hope it looks and plays good so what I just said isn't fruitless lol. Seriously, the Killzone universe = gold from a sales point of view. Epic scale with interplanetary war, and cool futuristic military mix with a pinch of space marine. With WKS and FF XIII, those are almost guaranteed to be games attached to the success of the PS3, definitely seeing huge sales for those. So many PS3 games with so much potential, and you only named a few! :p
About GTA, if it's not the ideas I made, whatever, I don't really care, those might not even work in practice, even if I'd personally like them too. But I agree with you nameless that GTA should have some more thought put into their missions at least, definitely. GTA SA and the 2 before, the missions by today's standards are a mediocre affair. They have to add some seriously polished gameplay elements to make a new GTA truly worthwhile. I wouldn't mind create a player (I like storylines, so I'm not sure what I think of this) but character development is also a place where GTA is lacking, gotta fix that up.

If they did the stuff that you mentioned up there man-I'd definitely buy the Game! lol-I wouldn't worry about Killzone's gameplay-i think World Wide Studios will take care of that. I hate to say it-but the graphics/feel/scope of the game is what will really drive it forward. It's there for taking if the Killzone crew wants to step up. GTA5 with 32 players in a crazy deathmatch would be cool tho...

And SCEWWS, they better make a damn good Killzone game lol. And it's likely because SCEWWS is a pretty big co-operative effort, I agree, Killzone will be good then. That's why it's probably my number 1 'want-to-see' game right now.
Cheers for SCEWWS, they are going to make the backbone of the PS3 this gen.

The way i se it is in the beginning the space don't matter(launch). The developers can spend that time on the code/game instead = better games.
