Burger King team to work on direct download games for multiple systems

Independent developer Blitz Games has revealed it has established a new division to concentrate on creating games for digital download.

The division, Blitz Arcade, has received a boost after the publisher developed three Xbox 360 titles for fast food chain Burger King, invigorating the company and proving it was capable of turning around fast, high-quality concepts in record time.

"One of the things that the Burger King deal opened up was that at the time it came about we were also looking at electronic distribution of videogames. This is an absolute winner, for the public and the developers," revealed Philip Oliver, CEO of Blitz, speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz

"What we've done with the team that worked on the Burger King project is we've set up a new division called Blitz Arcade, and we intend to make lots of arcade games for direct download."

Discussing the differences between Xbox Live Arcade and Sony's PlayStation 3 equivalent, Oliver pointed to Sony's intentions of delivering higher quality content as the key difference, as it steers clear of republishing retro titles.

"It's a very similar system but Sony is going to put much bigger memory limits and footprints on its downloads. It is not going to go the retro route - in fact Sony says it wants its games to be around the same price, but to be higher quality," he revealed.
"From what we've seen so far, Sony have got less product, but it is higher quality than Xbox Live downloads. It's setting the entry barrier higher, which we don't have a problem with because we want to do high-end games," he added.
The firm, also responsible for licensed titles based on Reservoir Dogs, Spongebob Squarepants and American Idol, also reiterated its commitment to creating full-length titles for next-gen consoles, with new deals set to be announced very shortly.

"I personally really, really like the idea [of arcade titles]. If you look at my background this sort of model worked years ago and it should work again," said Oliver. "But we also like working on epic games too."

"The epic titles are very good from a prestige and profile point of view. The point is that we decided at Blitz that we want to actually diversify in several different directions hence the reason we do these divisions," he concluded.

The full interview with Philip Oliver, where he discusses next-gen gaming, how the Burger King deal takes advertising in games to the next level, and the developers' first steps into the serious games market, will be published on GamesIndustry.biz next week.

And you thought PS2 had a lot of games....1 Company could potential have 10 titles being made with the download service. Fewer higher quality titles for $5 or $10 bucks? Count me in...Flow will be my first online purchase...

THey still have to put some classics like Street Fighter 2 and Contra up there-but I like this approach better...

Omnicloud, Sony has PSone games for retro. So as long as Sony puts PSone games on its network Sony does not need retro games like xbox. MS does not have huge legacy games or library like Nintendo or Sony. Its to the Sony's advantage to raise the bar higher. I was wow'ed by all the screenshots of the e-games from Sony, graphics sharp and crisp. The flow trailer was awesome... I definitely getting flow

I wholeheartedly agree with this approach.
I can play most any "retro" game I want on PC...
New, fresh, more polished games for ten bucks...hell ya!

I definitely getting flowI'm paitently waiting for a Chrono Cross download-that would be a must-buy for me-never got to finish it on PS. I think this type of design will open a lot of doors for soon-to-be devs to get there games out there. Send a demo to Sony for a chance to get published and put on E-distribution. And if it's really something special-then maybe you'll just a deal right there!! I'm not sure how Ninty is doing there online service-but I hope it's similar to Sony's approach...

I wasn't really saying I wanted retro games-but It would be rather cheap and easy to accomplish no? I know Sony isn't gonna push for retro games-but It wouldn't hurt to have a huge variety either. Besides that-PS games are considered retro games like you said and Contra, Street Fighter, Eiinhander, Gradius, Tomb Raider-all of these titles showed on Playstation. It's simply a win win situation. Add to that the new exclusive E-distribution games that will take advantage of the controller and graphics of PS3-well....u gotta win-win situation right there.

I think Sony is shooting for both. A centain quote seems to hint at the possibility. But seeing how this new trend is much different to the already popular retro titles being offered on the market, I believe this is the reason for them boasting over it's relevance in comparison to the first.
