21 PS3 games available 11/17
Three first-party, 18 third-party games will go on sale along Sony's next-gen console next month.

Today, Sony executives showed off the PlayStation 3's controller and online store at its Gamers Day event in San Francisco. At the same time, the company announced the final lineup of titles that will be available in stores on November 17, the day the PS3 goes on sale in North America.

Like some sort of corporate blackjack, the PS3's 21-game day-one lineup trumps that of Xbox 360, which had 18 titles at launch on November 22, 2005. By contrast, Nintendo has said its Wii console will have "more than two dozen titles available" when it goes on sale on November 19. However, of the 21, only seven are PS3-exclusive; six will be new games available on other platforms, and eight will have been previously released on other platforms.

Three PS3 launch titles will be first-party titles developed at one of the shops in Sony's Worldwide Studios stable. They include the much-vaunted shooter Resistance: Fall of Man, the basketball sim NBA 07, and the fantasy actioner Genji: Days of the Blade. Another Sony game, Untold Legends" Dark Kingdom, is being classified as a third-party title, as it is being developed the company's subsidiary Sony Online Entertainment.

The third-party PS3 launch lineup runs a greater gamut of genres. Five will be traditional sports games--EA Sports Fight Night Round 3, Madden NFL 07, NBA 2K7, NHL 2K7, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07--while another, Tony Hawk's Project 8, is of the extreme athletic variety. Two others, Need For Speed Carbon and Ridge Racer 7, will focus on automotive competition.

Three other PS3 launch games will also involve motorized vehicles traveling at high speed. However, they will also be armed, as the combat of Full Auto 2: Battlelines, Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII, and Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire will show. They won't be the only games to feature flurries of gunfire, though. Three high-profile first-person shooters--Call of Duty 3, F.E.A.R., and Rainbow Six: Vegas will all go on sale on November 17.

Three role-playing games will hit the PS3 from the get-go. Besides SOE's Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, the console will be graced by the expansive The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and the superhero-themed Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Last but not least, the platformer category will be represented solely by Sonic the Hedgehog.

SCEA Launch Titles:
Resistance: Fall of Man
NBA 07
Genji: Days of the Blade

Third-Party Publisher Titles:
Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII / Ubisoft
Call of Duty 3 / Activision
EA Sports Fight Night Round 3 / Electronic Arts
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion / Bethesda Softworks
F.E.A.R. / Vivendi Universal Games
Full Auto 2: Battlelines / Sega
Madden NFL 07 / Electronic Arts
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance / Activision
Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire / Namco Bandai Games
NBA 2K7 / 2K Sports
Need For Speed Carbon / Electronic Arts
NHL 2K7 / 2K Sports

Very diverse and quite satisfying for any PS2 owner wanting to take on the successor for the first time. If I were in US in November, I'd be one happy customer in line. The list has everything the competition has and then some. Very good for PS3 only owners too.

Resistance for me at launch, though I might rent one of the others :-D

interesting to see some good fantasy games for release day with the myriad
of sports titles and fps.

That is a reasonably strong launch lineup, but launch lineups are never that great. Resistance definitely looks like the premier title up there.

Please, no one buy NBA 07 unless you want to look at the 1080p60. It's a horrible, horrible game. Please, I beg of you. They need a frigging wakeup call, whoever makes that game.

I bet the biggest sellers of those will be Madden, Resistance, COD3, Fight Night, and Rainbow 6, and maybe Tiger Woods too, and probably Ridge Racer, forgot that one, that's my guess. I want Resistance to do the best though, and I have a feeling it just might, Insomniac is great and Resistance is about the only title there going with something close to being new and fresh, I like new IPs, they have a feeling sequels cannot have.

Great find btw!

any idea what of those are 1080p? I may only bother to purchase full hd games for launch.

I wanted and thought the Formula one game would be a launch title. That is one I want.

Thor Thorsen is a terrible writer:

"...is of the extreme athletic variety" *yikes*

"However, they will also be armed..." *awwwwwkward and silly*

"developed at one of the shops in Sony's Worldwide Studios stable..."

So what's the metaphor: a card game, a workshop, or a horse's stable? *cries again*

I don't usually care about such things outside the university, but this was painful.

Resistance, Resistance, Resistance.

Resistance is the number one game that I desire.

Resistance is the only game that interests me.

Oblivion I've already played to death

I am uniterested in most multi platform ports, and will do my best to avoid them at all times, so that leaves me with slim pickens.

I'm sure I'll get a 2nd game, but don't know which game that will eb yet.

^Yeah the Xbox guys at IGN said they might even play multiplayer more than Gears...I never got into myself-but I'll be waiting for the reviews....I gotta get Resistance tho

I already pre-ordered Resistance and Oblivion (haven't played it yet). Looks like that was the right call. I'm not especially interested in the other launch games, especially the sports games which seem like mere incremental improvements over the current gen games (Why are there no shadows on crowd members in Tiger Woods? etc).

I wish motorstorm was still a launch game, hell, heavenly sword while we're at it, but I'd rather they polish the games and release them early next year than put them out and be buggier than a pile of cow dung.

IT would have been, Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Motorstorm.
Then it was, Resistance, Motorstorm, Genji 2
And now it's Resistance, Genji 2, *possibly* RR7.
Heh.

Resistance and Motorstorm for life! I mean, for launch! Those are the most next gen games that we'll be playing on the PS3 for launch, can't wait for a real big wave of PS3 games, ooo this gen is gonna be hawt for the PS3!

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. This is the only game I want so far, to start off with, but have not seen it on any launch lists. As far as I know, this game was sced to be out on day 1 .... *crosses fingers*

Oblivion may very well be over-hyped, but I'll need an epic RPG at launch. My choices are Untold Legends or Oblivion. Seems a fairly clear decision to me.
