Ah crap.

But this is a bit odd...didn't they already say they weren't making the 2 million mark? This could be a repeat of old news, even if Bloomberg has it today.

Oct. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., which slashed its profit forecast yesterday, said it may not reach this year's shipment target for the PlayStation 3 game console because of a parts shortage in the Blu-ray high-definition disc drive.

Sony plans to ship two million PlayStation 3 players this year to the U.S. and Japan, and six million worldwide by March. The Tokyo-based company said yesterday annual profit would fall 35 percent to its lowest in five years on price cuts of the console in Japan and a recall of 9.6 million computer batteries.

``The honest answer is it's more of a target'' for PlayStation 3 shipments, Jack Tretton, co-chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said yesterday in an interview. ``Clearly we've had production issues.''

A shortage of the PlayStation 3 would give Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. a bigger head start in the $20 billion console market when they sell their players next month in time for the year's biggest sales season. Sony cut the price of the PS3 in Japan after consumers complained it was too expensive compared with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii.

``It would be a big hill to climb with a console that costs twice as much,'' said John Broady, an analyst for GameSpot.com, a unit of Cnet Networks Entertainment that tracks video-game sales. ``A lot of this is driven by mothers. When they look at their budget, I think the Wii is going to be very attractive.''

Shares of Sony fell 1 percent to 4,740 yen as of 1:45 p.m. on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, against a 0.5 percent advance in the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average.

Laser Parts

The PlayStation 3 will retail for at least $500, while a basic Xbox 360 model from Microsoft sells for $300. Nintendo is releasing its Wii console at $250.

Sony said in September that it would cut the 2006 rollout for the PlayStation 3 from four million to two million units and delayed the console's European introduction four months. The company said at the time it still expected to reach its original target of six million units by March.

The company said at the time it couldn't make enough blue diode lasers, the key components of the Blu-ray player. A Blu-ray disc can store at least five times more than the 4.7 gigabyte standard DVD, enabling high-definition game graphics and movies.

``While they may have great engineering, producing it actually takes a lot of time and more money than was initially expected,'' said Pascal Masse, a director at the Japanese unit of Aberdeen Management Asia Ltd., which oversees about $2 billion of Japanese equities.

Earnings Outlook

Net income for the year ending March 31 will decline to 80 billion yen ($675 million) from a year earlier, Sony said. Losses at the game division will be wider than Sony expected because of the PlayStation 3 price cut and slower sales of the PlayStation Portable. About 60 billion yen of operating profit will be erased from the division, the company said.

Tretton spoke in an interview at Sony's ``Gamers Day,'' an event in San Francisco designed to showcase PlayStation 3's capabilities. Sony will release more than 20 game titles for the console during the holiday season. Titles include ``Resistance: Fall of Man'' and ``Genji: Days of the Blade.''

Publishers including Electronic Arts Inc. and Activision Inc., the two largest makers of video games, are developing titles for the PlayStation 3.

Microsoft has shipped 5 million Xbox 360 consoles since it was introduced in November 2005 and expects to sell 10 million by the end of the year, said spokeswoman Molly O'Donnell. Nintendo plans to sell 4 million units of the Wii by year's end, the company said in September.

Don't suppose you guys give rep for bad news too eh? ;) Ah, who am I kidding.

No, everything is fine. It's just bloomberg making a story out of the target numbers. Every company that produces a sophisticated piece of consumer electronics will have a launch target , but can not guarantee the numbers - unless, of course, if they just lower the target just to be sure. However, in this case, demand is extremely high and everybody is asking for launch numbers.

Bloombergs version: target = not guaranteed = may not meet shipment

Don't worry - only Sony knows, right?

yea the 2mil mark has been gone since tgs. Bloomberg has the numbers wrong. They will definatly make 1mil by the end of december.

Uhm, no, as far as I know, Sony is still heading for one million in North America and one million in Japan by the end of December.

thats not how I understood it. I understood it to be 1 million units produced by the end of this year, and 6 by march.

By 17th of november there will already be 500.000 units available. Sony will be able to deliver more than just 500.000 units from November 17th to December 31.

I'll find some information to clarify this.

How do you figure. Thats a little more than a month, which is how much time they have to manufacture the 500,000 for the launch.

The target is still 1 million per territory by year's end.

Im doubting the 2 million by years end at this point it seems a little utopian. I am still wary of them reaching the 500,000 for launch. But none the less at this point Im exstatic the console is arriving shortly.

Who knows honestly, we won't know how many will be shipped by X date until we actually pass X date and have confirmed numbers of what has already been done. We all know how significant Sony's numbers are and we all know that any numbers we get won't be, if at all, much better. Maybe they will reach it, maybe they'll surpass it, maybe they'll get far below, it's all up in the air until we actually get there of course, no one can really say for certain. In my mind, the most likely scenarios are them getting, not significantly, less than Sony's expected numbers for launch and probably for years end too, and a bit less likely than Sony will match shipped numbers for both those times.

But then again, the only people who truly care about this are the people like me who haven't got their money down on a PS3... :(:( You selfish preordering bastards... why don't you share! BAHHHHHH!!!! *hyperventilates* Ok... I'm calm... but still... BAHHHHHHHH!!!

I just hope Sony does ship 500,000 at launch. That means everyone who pre-ordered is getting one.

:offtopic:

My mom and dad surprised me today, by leaving me the message from EBgames/Gamestop about reservations on the answering machine. I'm excited, I am able to get one at launch.

Sure you are

Are you trying to saying something here??? Perhaps it would be best if you simply say what you mean.

Would you like to bet that Sony doesnt meet the 2 million by Dec31/Jan1.

@Leedog - I got the message also. They talked about the browser and Talladega Nights. (will a wireless keyboard and mouse be compatible with the PS3)

GIve us the FREAKIN COnsole SONY!!! LOL...doesn't really matter. I predict a Million units in U.S and close to 1 million in Japan by the end of 06. THe game lineup for early 2007 is great for PS3 so whenever they ship em, people will buy em. Uneccesary speculation if you ask me. I don't plan on getting one till 2nd shipment, but if not-PS2 and Wii will keep me busy. PS3 won't be short on games like PSP is. Every month looks to have a hit like MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, Unreal, Virtua Tennis, VF5, GTHD, and Lair-if essentially won't matter when you get a PS3-since the value will increase every month!

"world 'might' end tomorrow"

"pope 'may' be gay"

"mcdonalds 'might' be healthy"

see, i can make these headlines too ;)

its entirely possible for the console to be delayed, they're just taking one possible outcome, putting "might" in the headline to cover their asses and putting it out there. no biggie.
