View Full Version : PS3 Gamer's Day Details: The Good and the Bad
The Good:
* Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is going to be a pack in with the launch consoles, so in exchange for pre-ordering early or freezing outside overnight, PS3 owners will come home with at least one Blu-ray movie to watch. While this may not be the first title to come to mind in terms of showing off incredible visual and sound quality, it is a funny smash-hit movie that most will enjoy.
* The PS3 loads Blu-ray movies fast. Reports are that within 10 seconds of selecting the movie from the menu, its playing. Long load times have plagued standalone Blu-ray and HD DVD players so far, in that respect, the consoles may have them beat.
* 18 launch titles, including true 1080p games like NBA '07. Most are multiplatform, but Madden, NBA 2K7, Fight Night Round 3 and others have added a few features to take advantage of the tilt controller, or just enhance them slightly over their Xbox 360 counterparts.
* HD Movies can be stored on and played directly from the hard drive, although codec support is still unknown.
The Bad:
* No, there aren't any HD cables in the box. Really. The HD era starts now, but BYOC. That may be old hat, or maybe even preferred by many home theater enthusiasts, but for $500/$600 you shouldn't have to buy anything else to get HD out of the box. If you already have component cables from a PS2 however, the AV connector is the same and they will still work. Standard HDMI cables will of course be necessary for digital connections.
* Yes, there are native-1080p games, but Resistance: Fall of Man is not one of them. Previously touted as 1,920 x 1,080, 22GB of goodness, it is now merely 16GB of 720p goodness. All in all this is probably for the best, but this game is one the PS3's most anticipated games and is supposed to show why gamers need 1080p and Blu-ray...and not Xbox 360s.
* The PS3 does not do DVD upconverting over any connection, and there are reports that despite previous claims, it will not enhance the visuals on PS1/PS2 games. This is a joke, the console has more than enough power for upconversion, and with its HDCP-protected digital output it is perfectly capable of upscaling to 1080p. The Xbox 360 does it and there is no reason why the PlayStation shouldn't.
* That recently-reduced-to-400k in the US launch number is really more of a "target", which may or may not be hit due to production issues. Either start lining up now or mortgage the house to buy one on eBay, getting a PlayStation 3 in 2006 won't be easy.
* No included remote, the BD remote will ship "soon" for $24.99 and operate via Bluetooth, not IR.

Lol the bad is so weak.
Cables, 1 game changing from 1080 the 720... ( I forgot that is the only game in 1080p.... oh wait no it isnt) No remote.... Id much rather have my BD, wireless and Bigger HDD than stripping that and giving me a cable and a remote LOL.
The only thing vaild there is the Production target krap
But then again... why do we even bother with engadget.

What about the No DVD upconversion? This was the biggest surprise to me.

What about the No DVD upconversion? This was the biggest surprise to me.I guess this is just to favour Blu-ray movies somehow. Not that upconverted DVDs look comparable to Blu-ray movies in the first place though, and they could always release a firmware update for this if the demand was enough, so...
I would have liked to have seen upconversion for the PS3. I have a ton of DVD's that would have benefited. With that said, I'll probably just be getting Blu-Ray movies from now on anyway. More Xbot fuel though.

Huh, that IS odd I find. Even my dad's $80 Samsung DVD player upconverts them and has an HDMI port. I can't imagine a reason why the PS3 couldn't upconvert DVD's and even PS2, PS1 games. Really really odd... this is confirmed stuff?

It will make the DVD -> Blu-Ray jump more apparant for the consumer.
They'll put DVD into the PS3 and say "oh man, look how shit this looks compared to a Blu-Ray movie" and then with that mentality, start supporting the Blu-Ray brand.
Or maybe I am just stretching it a bit too far.

Well, the lack of upconversion *is* bogus IMO. I'd be more upset about it, except that I'm getting my Linux. (big relief!)
Is that DVD upconversion thing confirmed though? I feel also that the lack of upconversion on PS1/PS2 games is also just another 'lost in limbo' factoid. We need more for confirmation than Engadget repeated rumors posted elsewhere, especially when the original sources now tout that things are still unclear.

Exactly Xb, I am not sure if they have comfirmation of this stuff, of it is just speculation from other sources... I don't think we can make a true judgement yet, given the information provided.

Well, with restraints on component upconversion I seriously doubt that the PS3 does upconversion over component. Although, I see no reason why it coulndt up convert over HDMI.

if it's really that serious I'm sure they'll release it in a firmware update. Honestly-I think it's just so more people can go and get Blu-ray-but why they didn't do it PS1 and PS2 games is any1's guess. HDMI cables sold seperately sucks...What's to expected from Sony tho eh?-KING OF PERIPHERALS...
And you didn't mention the PNP either. A lot of the news like the Playstation store, CD buring, PSP streaming, and the other goodies I found out from this event. I matching many of Lives feature while having an open enviornment so devs can still do there own thing for free is a big plus for online funtionality for PS3.

Then by that theory the Sony BDP Blu-Ray player shouldn't support DVD upconversion but it does.

Good point-maybe they said-we're giving them too much already...LOL and just decided to screw us on that feature...It still is possible tho-just like the whole controller thing.

I believe it was Phile that said that the console will upconvert games from the previous console to HD but that it would not change the graphics on them none. That artical from Engadget sounds bogus to be. I doubt this was confirmed.

The production issues that Sony is having has nothing to do with 400,000 launch units. It has to do with the delay in Europe! There will still be 400,000 units coming to NA.

Tretton's "target" comment seems to keep getting taken out of context by various websites. The interviewer didn't simply refer to the 400k-1.2 million by Dec. 31, but the 6 mil by March and Sony's overall 5 month forecast. That's a rather significant distinction. When it comes to manufacturing and initial component bottle necks nothing is going to be set in stone, he seemed to just be stating the obvious. Not sure why the freak out over it.
here is what I wanted from the event:
Online news
Camera info
launch lineup
peripheral and game prices.
here is what I got:
Online news: check (a couple of days earlier even).
Camera info: nope.
launch lineup: check.
peripheral and game prices: check.
additionals:
e-Distributed game announcements and rough pricings.
BD movie bundle.

Well if upconverting isn't available at launch, it wouldn't surprised me if there was a firmware update later on to enable this feature.
IGN confirms no upconverting:
Will the PS3 upscale DVDs and/or PSone and PS2 games?
Sony has officially stated that the PlayStation 3 will not upscale DVDs. As far as PSone and PS2 games are concerned, Kaz Hirai has stated in an interview with IGN that they will play "in their original form". We would take this to mean that they won't be upscaled either, but Sony has not made an official statement either way.
