Outta all the cool shots they've put up on EB and whatnot they choose that for the box? Is that final?? hahahahhhahahh just plain ol UGLY...They shoulve just put a Plain black box that said PLAYSTATION 3 across rather than that.

Sony seriously needs to pic a concrete color scheme for the machine. We've got blue/green and white along with black, red and silver. Personally, I'd prefer the last scheme:

Primarily black box with silver Playstation 3 length wise, and red trim here and there. Really, it'd make the same visual impact as the blue box.

I doubt that there would have to be some kind of difference if only for consumer awareness.

It's possible the 20GB model may simply be a black box with "Playstation 3" across it. It's supposed to be the least available of the two SKUs, so this seems likely.

Exactly. It'll probably have 20GB and the Blu-Ray logo on the front to have to those two things out there.

Those were display boxes, notice the thread title says retail packaging. These are what you'll see in stores, and why it was important for the press to see that they exist and that production is underway.

Again, these are the retail packages for the console. The ones at TGS had no backside to them listing anything, they merely repeated on the back.

Or are you purposefully making this massive oversight simply to troll?

Seriously, the ps2 box was just slick and badass. this is...meh. I mean, I'm not mad or anything, but the ps2 box was sexayyy.
But this will work either way. Both the Wii and PS3 box have the picture of the console on the box. Just so there's no confusion! >_>
Seriously though, they could put PS3 in a brown paper bag and it'd still sell like hotcakes.

The PS2 box was quite possibly the best ever. I don't care how the PS3 box looks, as long as there is a PS3 in it. It's just a box people.

just wait till MILR comes and demands that sony releases the specs of the box, what its dimensions are, the constituency of the cardboard, and then starts complaining if they don't upgrade it before the final PS3 comes out with 6mm instead of 5mm thickness, and a retractable plastic handle... ;)
