Christ, it's like an event down there. LOL

Reminds me of the excitement in our house when we bought our first big SDTV. Everyone in the family was gawking around the HUGE ASS box waiting for it to be opened. The reason being it was very expensive at that time and it took everyone's opinion and homework to decide on this one Sony Wega TV. This reminds me of that overwhelming day.

I remember Lik-Sang being the very fisrt site to picture the inside parts of the PSP. I am eagerly awaiting to see PS3 pulled apart. not that I would understand anything, but damn I loves me some kick ass circuitry. :)

It's actually here - PSM3 takes ownership of its PS3

Ohmgod. It's here.

Just a short post to let you know that, at approx 12 noon, our PS3 arrived in the office. GET IN.

We unpacked it, boshed it on and haven't stopped playing yet. Lots more tomorrow, but here's our findings so far:

1) It's SUPERQUIET. Yes, we've said it before but we're still surprised. It makes less noise than a PS2 - just a thin, quiet whirr of a fan.
2) It gets warm - but not hot. The fan blows air out of the back and out of the top of the machine (when it's in its upright position). It's a bit weird. You certainly couldn't 'fry an egg' on the top of the machine while it's stood on end, but you could 'thaw a bagel'.
3) Loading discs is a quick, no fuss operation.
4) Screen modes up to 1080p are available - but the games we currently have don't offer 1080 modes.
5) It's see through. You can see all the innards through the smoked black plastic exterior
6) It creaks when you pick it up. The panels groan slightly with the weight of the innards
7) The power supply is built it - which accounts for what heat there is and makes it a single self contained unit (as opposed to 360's game of two halves).
The menus are very easy to understand. It's literally just like a PSP.
9) Games seem to leave a data folder behind on the HD disc (some kind of swap file?) We played Resistance, stopped, looked at the disc from the PS3 menu and found a 33Mb file on there (not in the save game directory). We played MotorStorm, looked again, and it had gone.
10) The pad isn't quite as classy as you think it will be. The console looks very special. The pad is a bit, well, ordinary. Dull plastic, and, because it's so light, it feels a bit unsubsantial. The new triggers are a bit rubbery too (though do have an 'L4' 'R4' 'click' at the end which we haven't noticed before.
11) We've got code for MotorStorm, Resistance and Genji so far. With more to follow.

That's about it for now.

LOTS more tomorrow.

Holymoly. It's here. You can sense the speed at which this box is being ripped apart can't you?

http://www.psm3mag.com/resources/psm3/arrival2.jpg

And there's some games in there too. Momma!

http://www.psm3mag.com/resources/psm3/arrival3.jpg

And… there… it… is…

http://www.psm3mag.com/resources/psm3/arrival4.JPG

And there's Dave settled in for the week. Shortly before we bludgeoned him to death.More tomorrow :-p

If so then how the hell does an 'L4' 'R4' feel like. who the hell has ever experienced that. lol.I guess you know that by pressing the analog sticks upright you're actually pressing the L3 and R3 digital buttons on the DS, DS2 and SIXAXIS, and doing so feels like "click". I really don't know whether that "click" on L2 and R2 means that they've reached their press limit or whether SIXAXIS features yet two more buttons. I'd say the first option is the most likely one.

so the grey wire in the top left that the connectors are hidden is the hd component? I guess that can be dropped into the garbage on the way out to buy an hdmi cable. I mean, who honestly would want that when all hdtv sets accept digital dvi cables, atleast.

I still cant figure out why they decided to put in an ethernet cable. I think HD component cables are much more important. Especially since more than half the consoles are going to be wifi!

I dont have a link but i remember KH saying that the reason for not including component cables is that they dont know how long consumers need them. But, ethernet cables are even more of an unknown for distance. At least you know the console is going to be sitting near the TV, whereas the router can be located anywhere in a house.

If we look at these pics. It shows a big protruding (rectangular) thing coming out from one end of the cable. Now the question is, what kind of a thing requires such a huge thing on one end. It's a hella lot bigger(and odd rectangulish!) than the power cable plug end, that's a given for anyone with an ounce of PC know-how.

So I think some eagle eyed cable fetishist member should step out and describe what it can be.

The cable in these pics is what I'm talking about...

Hmm, maybe they got some sort of makeshift memcard adapter? Or maybe it could be a votage adapter like yosha stated...

yoshaw
10-25-2006, 03:34 AM
What I meant with adapter was for it being a voltage up/down converter for worldwide consumers who'd like to travel with it. But then again, Lik-sang story is enough to squash this theory.

Lips,
You mention an interesting aspect, I too have a cable that came with my 6600GT and it plugs into the DVI port and converts it to Component out. I'll see if I can post screenshots of this thing I'm talking about. It's huge end sure as hell looks quite similar to the PS3 cable we have here in the pics I posted above.

lol Oh God, please let it be Nvidia helping out sony with a free hdmi-to-component cable. Won't that be a megaton!

Lekko
10-25-2006, 04:51 AM
It looks like an official memorycard adapter. If that is a test unit, they would need that for testing BC. My bet is memory card adapter.

yoshaw
10-25-2006, 05:00 AM
Ohh, I could have easily accepted that if I hadn't seen the ultra high-res pics of the adapter. Thing is, the PS2 to PS3 memorycard adapter uses a standard USB to mini-usb cable. Exactly like the one used to charge the Sixaxis controller. So the cable is probably not the memorycard adapter. Unless Sony decided to make usb cable as thick as it appears on that cable >.< Unnecessary waste of plastic you see.

It's just the power cable, nothing mysterious about it.

Edit: confirmed two power leads, one for US, another for Europe. lol

The contents of the box (composite lead and no HDMI lead?!?! Please put this right for the UK launch Mr Sony!) Just so you know, the box contained: A PS3, a UK power lead, an American power lead, an ethernet cable, a composite TV lead, one joypad, a USB to mini USB lead (used for charging the pad) and (in our box) a copy of Resistance, a copy of Genji and two discs each with a single MotorStorm track. (One disc labelled MotorStorm Coyote, one laballed MotorStorm Rain.)

Thanks for the video. Watching it now.

hey Killa, do you use component cables with your Playstation 2? If so just use them with your PS3. Because both the Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 have the same Multi AV out.

^Ugh! Don't get too cozy with that thought mister. You won't be seeing a day like that anytime soon especially when 25GB BDR's cost a lot and a BDR burner can run you USD$750(sony) to USD$1000+(Plextor/BenQ) link (http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/08/28/plextor_blu_ray/), link2 (http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/03/benq-reveals-price-release-window-for-bw1000-blu-ray-burner/) - on top of that.
