March 25, 2004 - While the conference itself is still early in its morning hours, Sony was good enough to send out early copy for the media's perusal of SCEA executive vice president Andrew House's keynote speech, "Encouraging Innovation in Game Development." Amongst other things detailed in the speech's text is a pre-summary of the planned showing of a living, breathing, realtime PSP demo of a game expected to release at launch of Sony's handheld system next spring.

Titled Death Jr., the game from renown handheld/console developer Digital Eclipse and development group consortium Backbone Entertainment is the first officially-announced and formally-approved title for the system, and will be the first publically-displayed title for the handheld gaming unit as well. While it is unknown whether the game will be shown playable on actual PSP units or just on videotape, or what portion of the presentation will be shown with realtime gameplay (even at the Game Developers Conference, the focus is sometimes on the FMV developers and not the game developers), we do know that senior producer Chris Charla and creative director Mike Mika (of Digital Eclipse) will be on-hand to present the title and announce its exclusive status to the PSP handheld system.

No media or other info are available of the game, but those interested can already check out the character art from the Death Jr. Official Site.

Well your prayers have been answered. Gamespot has a video up, and it looks really nice, I was pleasantly surprised at the graphics.

edit note: I figured I'd be nice and include a link for the lazy. http://www.gamespot.com/psp/action/deathjr/media.html?gcst=deathjr_pspgdc1.asx

Holy shit that looks good. It's almost as if Sony skipped a generation. Joe was the first announced game, but it was not Sony-certified.

Not much better than N64 quality. In fact i think that could be done on the N64 today with the tools and tech we have now, except maybe for those particle effects. I think the DS will be on the same level as the PSP.

Tavis, you beat me to it. I was going to mention the 'kiddiness' of this game too.

'nintDo R teh Gh3y kiDDy'

The above comment was taken from a Sony representative, appearently the one who wrote the SCEA video game mantra a few months before, commenting on the originator of the handheld video game unit after publicly displaying the first true PSP title to the public. According to the rep 'D3a7h jR. i$ no7 teh kiDDy. |t$ g0t teh gR|m R3aP3R |n It.........Pwn3D.'

When asked if you could see the game from multiple perspectives and control Little Grimmy with touch sensitive control the rep replied with a faint and subtle, 'huH?'
