Kawanishi revealed to Famitsu that Sony's plans go beyond just media viewing, though. In the future, Sony hopes to allow players to play PS3 games remotely via the PSP. While Kawanishi didn't get into specifics, we imagine the PSP being used just to display game footage sent to it by the PS3 and send back controller data input by the player.

This type of connectivity has apparently been on the cards for some time. Kawanishi noted that he had such a system in mind when making the PSP's aspect ratio identical to that of high definition televisions, 16x9.

Very cool :)

I'm very interested in this, although it will be limited in certain ways, since the ps3 controller and the PSP are drastically different (button count, and now TILT mechanisms).... I imagine most functions, like we're slowly starting to see, will be complementary devices to the actual ps3 game, not supplementary.

A lot like GBA/NGC connectivity, which was okay... but could have been better.

I think there are a lot of possibilities here and I'd love to see Kojima take advantage of it :-D

MGS4's MKII mini-robot sequences of PSP gameplay confirmed? lol

It's really hard not to write this off the same way many people wrote off the GBA-GC connectivity as a silly gimmick.

However, just like the above mentioned feature, proper development can make for a great experience.

Viper,
I think it's more of a goal than a gimmick. I don't see any hint other than 'Kawanishi didn't go into specifics'. So the IGN article(or gamers themselves) are taking strides in the PS3-fullon-PSP gaming territory. I think Sony is expecting more on the like of a shared gameplay experience much like the F1 mirror view demonstration. Or the hinted MKII gameplay sequence by Kojima around TGS'05.

Not saying that you are, but allow me to say that nobody should mistake this feature for a full-fledged PS3 games to be played remotely via PSP. A part of those games on PSP? Hell yea, it has been shown this E3 with F1. Also, Phil Harrison in his interview to Game Informer admitted that there will be downloadable games on the PNP platform that can be swapped between the two platforms. Not restricted by the PSOne only games which are by the way also shareable between the two consoles.

So I'll rather call it a goal to achieve PS3-PSP game playability rather than a gimmick at this point since you can witness the development they're following thus far with that specific game -share goal in mind with PSone's PS3/PSP emulation. Followed shortly by specific PNP's games playable on the two platforms.

And If I'm not wrong, I think that's exactly the goal Microsoft was envisioning at this E3 with 'LIVE anywhere'. While Sony is about to deliver a similar thing(and more) in a few months time. Also, I think gamers worldwide would tend to own more PSP's than Smartphones with WindowsOS required for Live Anywhere capability at this point or in the near future. I can easily distinguish the gimmick from the two. Can anyone else?

I think sony had their eye on handheld/console compatibility/playabiltiy from the initial design of the PSP with it's built in wifi. These are the fruits on Kutaragi's dreams coming thru, he gave them the path to follow. As witnessed by the PsP F1 side mirror, sure it wouldn't be easy to emulte the Sixaxis controller but remember that in most of these games tilt functionality is an option.
That said maybe sony can/will release a tilt add-on since they said they initially thought about including tilt functionality with the system. Or release a UMD built just for tilt, similar to that GBA Kirby title.

I'd like to ask a few things related to your post and psp/ps3.

Do your thoughts come to a halt after that GC/GBA comparison? If yes, then why?

On the other hand. Granted you say it was your first thought. So on your second thought, are you able to think more than that and onto more feature/content delivery comparison between the two(psp/ps3 and gc/gba)? Is it still the same thing in your mind on second thought and why?

I wouldn't expect this to take place in less than a year's time, so don't get your hopes up too much...

If they pull that off (and its something I was dreaming of more than a year ago), then it would mean an end to ports. Chances are if you have a PSP you have a Sony gaming system. Who would want a crappy hand-me down version of the PSP version of a PS2/ PS3 game when you can save money and buy one game to play on both?

Who's actually pay for Ridge Racer or Burnout on the PSP when you could just get Ridge Racer 7 or Burnout 5 for the PS3 and play on both systems?

With PS1, PS2, Arcade and PS3 content potential being allowed on the handheld, Sony would be forced to make truly original products for the PSP to set it apart. Otherwise the price would have to seriously drop cause it would just be a decent media center which also happens to mirror PS3 games.

My dream of Contra: Shattered Soldiers on a handheld came true on a roundabout fashion. Imagine showing someone MGS4 on the bus stop. That would be wierd.

(P.S. would your PS3 have to be on for it to work? I can't imagine this working on standby mode.)

I think your jumping the gun a little there buddy. I really don't see playing Ridge Racer 7 on your PSP likely at all-the graphical capabilites simply aren't there in the PSP to accomplish some of the PS3 games. but say for an example a game like Flow is downloaded to your HDD-then at a hotspot-you can simply unpause the game and continue on your PSP! Full-blown PS3 games will probably just have added features for PSP users-not actually gameplay interaction. (at least not to the level were jumping to)

I think playing a game like Flow-that I bought on my PS3 is a very big advantage for PSP. I also think the PS1 library is a big advantage. Nintendo released it's handheld system, and made the capabilites apparent-and then devs jumped on after seeing the success Ninty had already accomplished. Sony must do the same with PSP. I think they're in the right direction right now-I better get a downloadable Chrono Cross Real SOON!!!!
