GDC: Microsoft will stay out of mobile console market - Peter Moore

GamesIndustry.biz staff 18:43 25/03/2004
Mobile involvement to be restricted to smartphones, PDAs

Speaking to gi.biz at the Game Developers Conference, Microsoft's global head of game content Peter Moore has ruled out the possibility of the company launching a mobile games console to compete with PSP or GBA.

Although the company will continue to support game developers working on its mobile operating systems - which are used in certain smartphones and PDAs - with the launch of a version of the XNA platform for these devices, Microsoft has no intention of entering the market with hardware of its own.

"It's not our core competency," Moore told our correspondent in San Jose. "For us [the mobile market] is all about providing software solutions."

Both Sony and Nintendo will launch new mobile consoles this year, while Nokia is expected to announce an updated version of the N-Gage platform next month and other phone manufacturers such as Sony Ericsson are planning phones with advanced gaming features.

"This is a tough business if you're a handset manufacturer - ask the Motorolas, the Nokias and the Ericssons of this world," Moore explained, "and our competence is in making the usage of these [devices] much easier for the user. And so, we're not in the business of building mobile hardware."

"Really, the only piece of hardware that the company has ever really got behind, of course, would be the Xbox. There are some instances where we've looked at things, but no, it's about software for us," he concluded.

While Microsoft does not plan to launch a gaming device to compete with Sony's PSP or Nintendo's DS and GBA handhelds, the company is supporting the launch of a new portable media jukebox from Creative, which will allow users to watch videos or listen to music on the move, and as such mirrors some of the non-gaming functions of the PSP.

Maybe that's a good thing. By lugging my Xbox around I don't think MS is big on portability.

Smart move by Microsoft, there will be no room in the market until Sony pushes Nintendo out of the way - which they will.

unfortunatly the truth is that sony will own cause they own the JP market. They are scared of change unless its japanese infuenced change, M$ and GCN don't offer 1/3 of the JP support that sony does.

M$ is smart to stay out, stay with live, online is the furute

I don't think many PSPs will be sold in North America compared to Japan. The PSP is going to cost a lot compared the Nintendo's. I think Nintendo still has a chance against Sony. I'm happy Microsoft is not going in to destroy the handheld market by releasing a handheld the size of a GC.

Why do you always got to be so negative against Nintendo? You're so mean.

Also I know this might be true...I hate Sony so much...the worst assholes ever and they don't deserve to be in the handheld business.

Let me put it this way, why pay 300$ for the PSP, when you can get a PSOne and screen for $100-150 dollars and play the same games? If both the PS1 and PS2 are compatatble, as they say, it would make little sence to purchase one of these things, unless you wished to be "Cool''...

Hylian: I believe that our friend Phantagram was captured by M$ in a software raid, and was held captive. We call this "Stockholm Syndrome".

why pay $99 for a GBA when u can pick up a superNes for $10 and play the same games

look as i see it this is sony's road map

(1) PSP launch
(2) PS3 launch (PSP and PS3 conectivity pushed)
(3) PStwo launch

As i see it there is a reason for sony to release the PSP to dominated the handheld market.

Then the PS3 will attempt to ride into everyone's living rooms.

and finally sony will pick up all the budget gamers with the PStwo

Seem's like some smart moves by SONY

The PSP will sell well based on the price. Thats that. No one will buy a PSP for $300, when they see a DS for $150 or a GBA SP for $99(probably lower by then). All the PSP will be is a PS2, except more expensive and probably less abilities, like DVD and crap.

Like play GBA games for exmaple. A feature that the Super GB is not able to do. Only the GB-Player (39.99$) can do it.

Still, even being so, that would be a $40 dollar investment to play GBA games on your TV, coupled with a 99$ fee for the cube if you do not have one. Now, even if you were to toss on the gamecube, a GB-Player, and a GBA-SP, you would still only be at 240$, still 60$ under the current bid for the PSP when it becomes available.

AS I said, being that PSP games will be compatable with the PSOne system, which you can get for 50$, and purchase its LCD screen for what? 50-100$, it is still 1/2 to 1/3 that the price of the PSP to play PSP games. Connectivity between the PSP and PS3 you say? Well, it would have to be nothing short of spectacular. And sony would be the first company to offer such an amazing technology, isn't that right Nintendo and Sega?
