Microsoft takes on Google Earth with Virtual Earth 3D Image

7 November 2006 - Microsoft has launched a new mapping service, dubbed Virtual Earth 3D, to rival Google Earth.

The online application lets users view a three-dimensional map of, initially, 15 US cities when they use Live Search. Users can also view two-dimensional maps, both aerial and bird’s eye views.

Although Microsoft is said to be investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the project, the company plans to monetise it through virtual billboard advertising.

The software uses both high-res images taken from the air and new images that are being transmitted by vans equipped with cameras driving through cities all over the US, so that users will eventually be able to browse cities at street level in 3D. Although only 15 US cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Atlanta, are available now to view, Microsoft plans to add 5000 worldwide.

“By helping people visualise information in far more useful and intuitive ways, Virtual Earth 3D takes search to an entirely new level”, Bill Gates commented. “The immersive 3D experience provides a more powerful and engaging interface that delivers better experiences not only for consumers, but also for developers and advertisers.”

Microsoft is offering the Virtual Earth 3D application programming interface to developers to use in their own searches and applications on various websites.

Not bad but My friend and I have been modeling an entire city in 3D with Google Earth and this MS program cannot do that.

Check this out.

Ha that's so cool but so discriminatory. I mean how do you think all those buildings not modeled feel?:-p

hehe.

They are in development. Those in gray or monochrome are in transition. The entire urban core including bridges are being modeled. I have another 160 buildings modeled 3 miles to the west as well.

great job viper. i have a feeling i'll be tinkering with that later. did you use sketchup?

Another thing that makes Google earth better is native Linux support. I'll be sticking with Google for that reason alone.

All the boxy monochromed buildings were made in program and the more detailed buildings with angles and curves were made with sketchup.

good work Viper. :)

also, I don't see why we should dismiss MS's effort on this just because Google's effort is so much better at the moment. I am excited there will be competition in this field since that will mean faster and better develpment will occure and we will be seeing new apps and features popping up. ;)

Thanks.

Well, GE has been steadily adding new tools and updates already. I seriously don't think this will push Google into overdrive.

I just don't think MS can match it and that's not just this tool but other features as well.

After actually trying to use it, it looks like it's just a part of Windows Live Local and requires IE to operate. No thanks.

Good job, now if you could only spend millions to hire people to drive around in vans and take pics to texture them with!

to be honest with you, this effort by microsoft is already a failure, it needs directx which means it can only run with IE and activex, therefore they already loose ~15% of the market. Google's approach on the other hand is far more universal.

I find it funny, MS makes this announcement right after Ken Kutaragi mentions doing the exact same thing yourself with the HD IP eyetoy and sat maps on the PS3 at the TGS keynote.

I wonder why MS went with this direction. it seems there were better and cheapers ways to do it. MS has weird management.

its not as if google wont find a more sensible way of doing it.

anyway, greater competition is always good i guess.
