Least some stuff is going right
Hardcore Casual Gamer highlights two decisions that suggest Sony is handling some PlayStation 3 issues correctly. First, the online PlayStation Store will not confuse or frustrate shoppers with a deceptive points system; and second, downloadable (original) PlayStation games will cost just $5.
We're tired of shelling out for pre-paid Microsoft Points, and then doing a mental conversion every time we want to know how much a chunk of downloadable content really costs -- and we're not looking forward to doing the same on Wii. So we're thrilled Sony has cut that step out of the process; and in doing so, is making that straight-up-five-dollar PlayStation joint look a lot more tempting. Isn't Nintendo charging the same amount for NES games? Wait a minute ... gotta do the conversion ...

Great news! I guess PS2 games will be somewhere between $10 and $15. Hopefully $10, because I will download many when they're available in the future.

The rate $5 is simply amazing. I hope release Japan-only games translated for a similar rate. I wouldn't mind $8, though. Small publishers should be able to profit a bit more. ;)
That really is fantastic though, I expected PS1 titles to be around $10 but there you go. Looks like I'll be downloaded a few PS1/PS2 games from back in the day. :)

thanks for the reps. Wonder if its $5 per disk or for the whole game (ie, $15 for FF7)
I would hazard a guess at per game Raitei.
if PSOne games really get priced for around that much, then this is the best news I heard in weeks. really, I am immediatly concidering a lot, lot more purchased that way.
great find Raitei. :)

$5 sounds pretty reasonable. I'm not sure how many of them I will end up downloading, but I'm pleased with the price point.

Ha, ha...thats crazy. Theres some ps1 games i wouldn't mind revisiting. I would imagine PS2 games would be $10-20. This could be a great selling point for Sony and a feature they can really do something with.

Not yet, we don't really know if they ever will be, even though it has been mentioned.

Xenogears and Crono Cross is the first thing that came to my mind. ;)
hopefully, there will be Vib Ribbion and other Japanese only games. ah, the region locking might still be a problem though. hmm, I wonder if it will be alright on a modded system....

Maybe once the PS2 reeeally starts losing steam and slowing down, like, late 2008, I can see it happening. But they're still selling those things like crazy, I don't see why they would be in a hurry to do this any time soon.

offering earlier PS2 games for download would be great to start with. also, there isn't a problem in getting even the latest games on the servers for download. after all, only PS3 gamers with broadband will have access to them. they will even raise sales since there would be a new market option for the publishers to get their games out.

This is also true. My thinking is just that Sony wouldn't want to stifle ps2's sales for any reason, but it's possible that they wouldn't even have to, all things considered. So it doesn't realllly matter if they do it now or later (at least on their end). They beauty of it is, they're moving a console, ps2 or 3, PS2 supporters ((developers)) aren't getting left in the dust these last years.
Again I quote kuturagi-san, "People won't wonder if they should get a PlayStation, but which PlayStation should they get?"
O_O.
PS tranitions have always been smooth for devs and gamers alike. you never feel cut off or neglected. the word 'seamless' keeps poping up. :)

I guess this puts an end to a lot of concerns.
Command & Conquer is the next stop for me.

Exactly, Vagrant Story, FF7, Tekken 3, Parappa the Rapper, Xenogears, Final Fantasy Tactics, all 5 bucks each. That's FRICKIN' INSANE. Worth your $499 all by itself.
I'm loading up $200 and getting every classic PS1 selectable on my HDD. All with zero loading times too no doubt.
Things like this make me want to be a one console household.

Yeah, but can't you only play them on the PSP for now?

Yeah, for now, but PS3 will get an emulator for both PSX and PS2 sometime inb the near future, according to Hirai, I think.

Yeah I read somewhere on this forum an emulator will come out later and that the later versions of the PS3 won't have the hardware in them.
It won't make the PS3 cheaper but it will make them coming faster.

That is great news. I know there are a lot of rare PS1 games a lot of people will love to download for only 5 bucks. Very sweet indeed....
