Hopefully no-one beat me to this.

It's official: Bethesda Softworks' epic role-playing game won't hit Sony's new console until next year; official launch-window lineup now stands at 20, with more delays rumored.

Just hours after gamers noticed online retailers were listing the PlayStation 3 version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion as coming in 2007, Bethesda Softworks has made it official. In a statement, Pete Hines, the rising developer-publisher's vice president of PR, said flat out that "Oblivion PS3 is now a Q1 2007 title."

Hines gave no official reason for the Oblivion delay. Unofficially, though, the postponement has stirred up suspicions about PS3 development difficulties. There have also been murmurs that the scant supply of the PS3 at launch--400,000 on day one in all of North America--is giving publishers pause about rushing games to market.

Of the 21 PS3 games announced as 2006 titles at Sony's Gamers Day, Oblivion is the first to be officially delayed until next year. Online retailers are also listing F.E.A.R. as being pushed to February, and unconfirmed reports have surfaced that have Sonic the Hedgehog coming in 2007. Neither reps for Sierra Entertainment nor Sega would comment on either game's release status, but GameStop.com still lists Sonic as arriving on November 14. A full list of the remaining 20 launch titles with their GameStop.com release dates are below.

I think there is A LOT of truth to this. Why rush a game when so few people will be able to enjoy it? Why not wait another month for Christmas when there will as many a 4x the number of players available to purchase your game. +rep

Of course the game I chose to get at launch gets delayed *sigh* I was going to ask for Resistance for Christmas, but I guess I'll get that instead.

Hmm it's a good read. There's no point in closing ones eyes to the possibility of delays. This is business and it happens, the good thing is that the PS3 is coming and there is no stopping that... 7 more days till I line up for mine.

Too bad. I had preordered Oblivion and Resistance. Maybe I'll give Untold Legends a second look... I just need an epic RPG for launch.

not surprising since there will very few consoles available. i bet they are going to wait till sony has another relaunch similar to what microsoft did earlier this year.

I've heard one of the guys hint at this because of PS3's scampy numbers for launch-they want a bigger user base-simple as that...

Cold comfort.

Oblivion was my reason for "must have" ps3 @ launch. Now if I don't get one on launch I won't feel to bummed.

I also agree that it's a purely money driven decision (which there's nothing wrong with imo). In the articles (psm, ign, etc) Bethesda comments on how easy it was to bring it (port) over to ps3, and even add new missions/quests.

Don't get me wrong I'm still gonna bust a55 to get one at launch but now I won't cry myself to sleep if I don't.

Ubisoft released 5 new pictures of Oblivion for PS3! (http://www.gfdata.de/archiv01-2007-gamefront/2675.html)

I don't post them directly, for the good of 56k surfers...

Funny, I specifically remember the last shot to be a 360 shot and I also thought it needed a lot of AF badly.

My bad!

After some research I found exaclty the same screens at teamxbox (http://screenshots.teamxbox.com/gallery/1041/The-Elder-Scrolls-IV-Oblivion/p2/).

So it seems, that gamefront.de made the news up...

I'm sorry for this! -_-

I had heard from a rumor from a guy who leak some info that turned out to be true that they had used the extra space of Bluray to bump up the texture quality in the PS3 version...hope that's true.

Also just noticed that Ubisoft is publishing this version instead of 2K Games...hmmm.

So this means tha they are optimizing the game for the PS3 better? I hope that is what it means. I hope that they include all the extra content and expansion packs all in one package. That would be nice of them. Make it worth the $60 dollars. I am not counting on it though.

I've already seen comparison shots that do show slightly improved texture detail.

Yeah, I remember in a fairly recent interview the devs said that they weren't going to bundle the expansions with the PS3 release, but they will have them available online for purchase like the Xbox360.

The only thing they are doing to the PS3 version visually is slightly improving the visibility and consistency of far away textures, like improving the look of where the water in a lake meets the land. They are going to add an entire new guild to the game though.

I hope they at least have it running at 60 fps, just to add that extra kick to the aesthetics of the game.

This is very good news. That means that they really are taking it seriously and making the game for PS3 while taking advantage to all it's strengths. Imagine if it looks significantly better than the PC and 360 versions. Just a thought, but it sure would be nice to see proof of the systems power in gameplay. Before MGS4 that is....:buldge:

I guess that makes perfect sense business wise for them. Get the cash to make more and better games. I guess we can expect the next Morrowind to be on the PS3 as well.

Don't get too overzealous. You most likely won't even notice the difference between the PS3 and Xbox360 versions.

They just want to simply port the game and nothing else. The Knights of Nine quest is a good plus, but that's gonna be available as an expansion in the 360 version.

Here is the article if you want to read Bethesda's take on the PS3 port:

It's already available for 360 and you can go to the store and buy the expansion for PC or download it from obliviondownloads.com

Bottom line if you don't own the 360 & you like action RPGs this game is a must buy! Perhaps the PS3 version won't have the frame rate and bugs that plagued the 360 version... Visually the games look very similar, but the PS3 version is sporting some better field of distance blur. Peace

I still think the graphics are pretty unimpressive in this game. I never liked them very much, looked very... something odd about them that just doesn't fit sometimes.

Sorry to say this like, again... but turn some god damn AF on! PS2 games own next gen at AF, honestly, it's so messed up. Stupid nVidia and ATI GPUs, they just don't do it the way the Emotion Engine used to hahahaha. But seriously, why do some PS2 games often have textures of equal or close quality to next gen? I'm playing RE4 right now on my PS2, and I mean, come on, where's my one gen to early next jump in graphics for some games. Sure sure sure, more stuff on screen, blah blah blah, but I mean really, we're at next gen here. Dammit FF XIII, come out already so we see what next gen really looks like!

I've said this before but if Oblivion is a graphics thing, why do the faces look better on my 7 year old PS2? The faces in MGS3, FF12, even back to Silent Hill 2 look much better and much more lifelike.

Bah humbug!

^The polygon count also seems to be lacking, and the lighting looks a bit off.

Honestly, they do. RE4 and those games look FAR better in terms of faces. Again, there is a lot of Oblivion's graphics that I believe are very lacking. There is equally as much though that I find impressive though. The dense forests in the game are very lush and beautiful, very pretty indeed.

I don't know...Oblivion on my comp looked pretty good with the various visual mods, AA, and AF cranked up. ;)

Oblivion's visual style might not impress everyone, but its sheer attention to detail was uncanny.

There's just so much going on in the game visually.

Crap, I'm kind of mad though that I uninstalled Oblivion. I could have become the master of the new Knights of Nine Guild also.

Consider the time it takes to become the master of every guild (well, not the assassin's guild; I killed the recruiter), be grand champion of the arena, and buy every ownable property. That's how much time I spent on Oblivion. I don't think I want to do it all over again though.

We can hope. But since this is a PC to console port, I wouldn't count on it.

What makes Obliivion such a graphically demanding game is the expansiveness of it. I have RE4 for GC and it looks frikkin incredible but there was no stage that was miles wide in all directions, it was all contained paths.

Think of how GTA never really looked all that graphically. It was because of how expansive the world is. That eats up a lot of resources.
