Some news and pics:
+ Using XMB and web browsing won't spin the fan. Playing Blu-ray will spin the fan, but the load is still low especially for early MPEG2 titles. The fan spins steadily while gaming.
+ The picture/audio quality for video playback is excellent. Though Cell does not do much postprocessing right now, they are doing research for it.
+ TrueHD is converted to LPCM and outputted via HDMI.
+ No DVD upscaling for the time being. But they are looking at user needs and have a plan for the support.
+ The Blu-ray player response is very quick. The interviewer says he felt it's the fastest among Toshiba, Sony, Matsushita HD players/recorders he tested.
+ Some contents holders say the speed of BD-Java in the PS3 is the fastest.
+ By pressing the triangle button the XMB shows the folder tree structure as is just like Windows Explorer.
+ It can connect with USB mass-storage devices such as PSP, but not with ones with special transfer methods such as iPod and Walkman. They are collaborating with the Walkman unit for some interaction in the future.
+ It's decided that the RSX clock stays undisclosed
+ The EE+GS embedded in the PS3 does emulation for PS1/PS2 for initial shipments PS3, so no graphics upgrade for the time being. The software emulation technology is almost complete but not ready for the launch. As soon as it becomes complete EE+GS is removed from future units.
+ In Remote Play with PSP for the 60GB version, the PS3 resolution becomes 480p (16:9) and converts the screen to MPEG-4 Simple Profile at around 1Mbps to send it to the PSP. All control is transferred to the PSP and you can control the PS3 by pressing the PSP buttons. BD/DVD and other copyright-protected materials can't be sent. As for games the support will come in the near future.
+ Downloaded PS1 games are transferred from a PS3 to a PSP by a USB cable.
PLAYSTATION TV (the demo kiosk) starts the download service too.
+ The web browser can open up to 6 pages simultaneously. 64MB memory is always reserved for the browser, the instant messenger and other XMB OS activity even while in game.
+ Installing Linux creates a new HDD partition separately from the PS3 partition. After the setup, you can select which system to use at the boot menu. You can choose to auto-boot Linux too.
+ Aside from Linux, SCE's developers are still seeking the way to publish proper software development environment for the PS3 main OS and PSP for general users. But right now the PS3 main OS can run only signed applications (while PS3 Linux can run whatever applications on it).

Today, Performance Designed Products announced that it will make a line up (http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/news/?id=14367) of PS3 products. These accessories will be retailed under the Pelican brand name. Certain products will ship for the PS3's November 17th launch, with more peripherals rolling out in early 2007.
Sony Worldwide Studios boss Phil Harrison has declined to offer a guarantee (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=20949) that the PlayStation 3 will hit Europe in March as previously announced.
The end of the beginning, as PS3 finally hits shelves in Japan (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=20952).
Nyko Technologies today announced three accessories for the PS3 (http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/news/?id=14402). This includes a Dual Charge AC ($24.99), which allows two PS3 controllers to be charged simultaneously, an HDMI Cable ($29.99) for full 1080p video output, and a Charge Link ($14.99) that allows players to use and charge the SIXAXIS wireless controller simultaneously. All of these items will be available when the PS3 releases November 17.

Anyone with a passing interest in quantum theory (no, seriously - bear with me) will probably be familiar with Schrodinger's Cat. For the uninitiated, the moggy in question is part of a famous thought experiment in which a cat is sealed into a box, and there's a random chance that it may be killed while in this box. However, according to Erwin Schrodinger, who thought up the experiment and presumably didn't like cats very much, in quantum mechanics, the cat is neither alive nor dead while it is in the box - instead, it exists in both states, and those states are only resolved when the box is opened and someone peers in.
All of which is, in a somewhat convoluted way, not dissimilar to what will happen this Saturday in Japan - when the PlayStation 3, after literally years spent in a half-conceived state of rumour, speculation, postulation, discussion and more often than not, criticism, will finally go on sale in Japan. By the time lunchtime rolls around in Tokyo on Saturday, 80,000 Japanese consumers will have opened the box, peered inside - and will be drawing conclusions on whether the kitten is alive or dead.
The launch of a console, especially one so hugely anticipated and so hugely important to the industry as the PlayStation 3, is a fascinating turning point. Prototype units of the PS3 have been floating around for some time now; journalists and developers have been playing PS3 games for weeks, and even some members of the public have had hands-on time with the console at various shows. However, the moment when people can walk in off the street (albeit via a massive queue, no doubt) and buy a console off a retail shelf is a crucial step. It is the point when fact finally takes over from speculation, and when the debate over the merits of a system moves to an entirely new stage.
Nobody could claim that Sony has had an easy ride in the past year, and even noting the astonishing vitriol directed at the PS3 from many quarters, nobody could claim that the company deserved an easy ride. The price point, the European delay, the small unit allocations, the pre-rendered footage, the occasionally astonishing statements from senior company executives - all of these things posed questions which demanded answers, and many of them contributed to dissatisfaction even among Sony's own customers, not to mention howling hatred among those who have chosen to act as flag-carriers for the firm's rivals.
None of that changes the fact that the company is, in sheer unit volume terms, the creator of the most successful games consoles in the world - and that it has proved in the course of two console generations that it alone had the muscle to provide a software line-up broad and deep enough to drive its platform, and the PlayStation brand, into the minds of the mass market. While it would be rash to disregard the level of discontent among hardcore consumers with some of Sony's decisions on the PS3, it's equally important to recognise that the specialist press and the tiny segment of the public who vocalise their opinions online don't tell the whole story. The tens of millions of consumers who have owned no console without the word "PlayStation" in its name in the past decade are largely unmoved by criticism of the PS3 - and while they may baulk at the price point, and may take a year or two to buy into the new system as a result, they're still waiting for a new PlayStation, not a new games console. The distinction is key, and it's the reason why this generation remains Sony's to lose, not Microsoft's - or even Nintendo's - to win.
Hardcore gamers, genuine fans of the medium, naturally look down on this mass market response to the PlayStation brand; these are not, after all, people who appreciate games as an artform, or who will ever buy into the cult masterpieces which take pride of place in the collections of reviewers and "true" gamers. It's a fair point, but one which holds little weight in a business sense. As a gamer, I may not think much of the taste or opinions of someone whose gaming habit extends only as far as buying the latest FIFA, GTA and Tekken titles for their PlayStation - but their utterly vital effect on the bottom line of the videogames industry is absolutely undeniable, and their taste for Sony's products is a bastion which Microsoft's fantastic marketing efforts have so far failed to penetrate.
As a result both of this factor, and of the simple fact that the PS3 itself has a strong if somewhat diminished fan following, 80,000 units will fly off the shelves in Japan, and 400,000 will disappear in a flash in North America six days later. The box will be open; the cat will spring out, and like most cats, will probably proceed to do something terribly unsavoury like licking its own rear end - a tortured extension of an already strained metaphor which refers to the inevitable build quality problems, network service teething issues and so on which PS3 will suffer in the initial weeks and months of its lifespan.
Regardless; this Saturday, the pre-launch phase is over. The hardware is out in the wild; the PS3 begins its life as a real, tangible product. Finally, the discussion can move from back and forth arguments over hardware specifications to the topic of real importance - software. Whether the PS3 has Blu-Ray or not; whether the Cell and the RSX can outperform the Xbox 360's formidable components or not; whether the hardware looks like it needs a drip tray and a multi-buy pack of bacon or not; all of these issues don't matter a damn in the long run. Software will sell hardware, as it has always done, and it's time to move the PS3 debate away from chips and diodes and on to software and services. It's time to stop wondering if the cat will still be alive when we open the box, and start discussing whether it knows any good tricks.
It's been a long, tortuous road - but even the console's most ardent critics should find it in themselves to raise a glass to Sony and the PS3 this Saturday. Competition will benefit everyone, after all - and regardless of your views on the different platforms, there's no question that the next five years will be one of the most competitive, and hence the most creative, in the history of the interactive medium.
Game on.

IGN reports there weren't people lining up for the PS3 anywhere they went...I'm quite surprised. Also, unsure why not...They did say why there weren't people lining up yesterday.
There's a reason. Many major retailers, including the Bics and the Yodobashis, are resorting to a lottery system for the PS3.
And as you can see, people line up indeed:

It came from Threespeech report on the UK's official mag
On asking if the PS3 will definitely be out in March in Europe…
“Given that all of our previous statements about launching in Europe simultaneously with the US and Japan turned out not to be the case, I would not like to make any definitive statements on that. It’s not my job to comment on hardware supply issues other than to say some very smart people are working very hard to catch up. In fact, the ramp up is already starting to happen in supply and output, just obviously too late for us to have launched in Europe at the same times as the US.”

now we sit back and wait for the reports. If there is hardware problems we should start hearing about them mid-week next week.
I think Sony nailed this launch, knowing full well any amount of reported hardware proiblems will haunt them more then the competition. At least I hope this is the case.

good ol' google video!
No surprises for me, as I see the rest of the games at launch to not be up to Resistances level.
techncially speaking, there will have to be something somewhere. even if it was only one unit, it will be reported and every gaming source under the sun will shout "Majority of PS3s defected!11!! are YOU one of the 3 lucky ones that have a semi-alright system?!?11!?"

Ok this is maybe a strange question. But for those owning a PS3, and have like 4+ other people owning one, or just 4+ other controllers.
How are the leds on the back of those controllers showing up? Since it's been debated that there can be up to 7 controllers attached to it.
Is it binary, or something else like?
http://www.gamersreports.com/grimages/940/1147134417/3/1/gr.image.jpg

1000 = 1
0100 = 2
0010 = 3
0001 = 4
1001 = 1+4 = 5
0101 = 2+4 = 6
0011 = 3+4 = 7
Edit: And something else in noticed on the Wii Marathon yesterday on Gamespot; There was like a Mii caracter you can create and attach it to your own controller. That way, if you go to your friends place, you can still play as your own character on like Wii Sports etc... Would be nice if we had the ability to do that with the SIXAXIS. That way you don't have to play as a guest.

you don't have to play as a guest. just log in to yout account from your friend's place. that is also more secure.

most likely, two light will lit up to indicate more then 4 gamers. for example, light 1 and 4 will lit up indicating who is the fifth player. light 2 and 4 will lit up indicating the 6th player, and so on.

^The PS3 boards were alive since 2002 I believe lol. PS4 will start soon enough. Just wait for the ambiguous Kutaragi '1000x more powerful comment' and you know it has begun.
And you know what, I'm gonna start it at least for myself right now. 2 Gigs system Ram at 2000 XDR and 2 Gigs Video Ram at 3000 Mhz XXDR (You know there will be one). And of course coupled with a 64 SPE Cell BE processor. An Nvidia GPU with 512 shaders clocked at 1400 MHZ. And, wait for it... the VD Drive, Viol-Ray drive using new shorter wavelength to store more for the evergrowing gaming needs. It stores 5 times that of BDs at 125 GB for a single layer disc. It runs at 2x and is as fast as a 12x BD drive. There, I said it. Beat that! LOL!
Launches with Fantavision 2: The Blinding Light and Genji 4: We still stuck with the same gameplay formula
O ya, and I-12 and Small (Working Title) from Naughty Dog too. You thought I was gonna tell you the names? Nahhhhh....
EDIT: This is so going in my sig.

Well that sucks...What about all the people who actually want to take there PS3's home and play with them? Who can you blame? The people who go outta there way to get a PS3 and then sell it? or the idiots or wealthy who spends thousands of dollars on a console? Can't really point the finger at anyone here, but as long as Sony keeps talking the "we're doing better" thing, more PS3's should come on a monthly basis.

Japanes launch was a newsitem on Belgian Television yesterday :).I'm confused:huh: Why did M$ just announce all this High def content and TV shows and stuff, when I see these things in the Playstation store on day 1? Or is it just trailers and not actual full TV shows and movies?

Where do you see high-def TV shows and movies on the Playstation Store?
frosty
11-12-2006, 11:43 PM
^what they are talking about isn't available in those shots, however Sony has made it known for some time that they were going to be offering something just like that in the near future. I wouldn't imagine seeing 1080p movies for download though, as it would compete with blu-ray, wouldn't be anywhere near as high quality (you won't be getting a 54 mbps movie over our current connections, and hdd space would max on one movie), and they would take forever to download when you can pay the same ammount to rent the BD from blockbuster. TV shows are a go though.
Domination
11-12-2006, 11:49 PM
For the time being, only trailers are available. But like I said, Sony owns Tri Star, Columbia and MGM pictures. Their library is going to ramp up quick. I'm not sure whether they will do any outsourcing or not like Microsoft, but I can definitely see the advantage in so many places for them in this area.

Where do you see high-def TV shows and movies on the Playstation Store?That's why I was pointing out...The day one service already has High def content. You can put whatever media you want on PS3 through all the different functionality, but I've been reading the sites and I see this Live is upgraded thing like the playstation store won't have the same stuff. If they have Hi-def trailers of movies on day 1 then:susp:
I guess I'm jumping the gun a little here, but I don't see a difference in the services at this point, Playstation store just looks like an earlier version of Live without as much content. This is not what I'm gathering from websites though. I just thought it was interesting how much misleading print is out there.

This is off topic, but I didnt know where else to post this. This last friday me and two of my friends went to Super Target to play the PS3. When we got there to my surprise there was no one playing it. They had Motorstorm and NBA Live 07 demos on the unit. Motorstorm is amazing Much more impressive then any of the videos (even though it was running at 720p). I hate to say this part, but it lead to something incredible. The PS3 froze during Motorstorm. So we found a person with a key to the cabinet. They had the PS3 hidden behind a poster. The idiot with the key didnt know how to reset the unit, so I asked If I could. He pulled the poster back and let me touch the freakin PS3. I never thought I'd be so excited to actually get to touch it. Neway I talked him into pulling the poster back and letting me get a picture. I took the pic with my phone, so It's not so good. Ill post later.
