Its looks like one of the questions that we have all been asking has been answeared, "can the PS3 HDD be changed and will PS3 format the new drive automatically?" Well the answear is YES :)

Its official you CAN replace PS3s HDD with a SATA HDD of YOUR choice and Size. And by the looks of things PS3 automatically detects the new drive and formats it :)

Link here (http://ruliweb2.dreamwiz.com/ruliboard/read.htm?num=19646&table=game_ps04&main=ps) Translater needed :)

A few shot's

This last picture shows both 120gig and 97gig, i asume that the 120gig size is the actual memory on the HDD and the 97gig is the useable memory after formatting?

Looks like the preinstalled HDD is Seagate. That one is a 20 GB one.

This news is awesome, no string attached hard disk upgradability.... IMHO a huge positive step to counter the argument that Sony does not proprietary stuff...

Does it void the warranty??

Even if it does this is an excellent option.

my question, is can you take the 20 or 60 Gig drive out of the PS3 and put it into a computer.

I suspect this to be true.

I can't see it actually doing that, it's so easily opened, and it tells you how to do it in the manual, it'd just be retarded as hell to have the warranty voided. "Hey! You can swap out the hard disk drive and change it with a new one in 3 easy steps! Oh but uh..it might kind of uh.. might uh....void the warranty.":susp:

seeing as it is a standard, off the shelf, 2.5 inc. HDD, why wouldn't it work?

Agreed...However, I'm still gonna pick up the more pricey ps3 because its wireless and I have an HDMI 400 Monster cable.

I'm only getting the 60G model because of the Wi-Fi PSP support. yes, there will be Wi-Fi USB adaptors, but having it in built with 40G extra HDD space is a good deal for me. plus, the chrome linings just seal the deal. ;)

Very neat. Nice guides. It doesn't look too hard.

That could possibly be a rumor from the site I'm thinking, not to mention those being test units they were using at the time which still lacked any proof of this based on others we saw. So I can't say that I'm convinced by this just yet.

For the standard unit out now, a removable HDD is listed in the manual, there is no visible seal in place to void the warranty, and the HDD can also be removed rather easily.

BTW, great to see you around.
