The drive won't fit inside the unit obviously but the drive itself is 320GB!
:shock
I may be doing this with my own PS3. Buy an Enclosure for the drive to keep it cool and protected
Thanks to Bad_Boy and the person he got the info from "one" from B3D

Excellent. I have a 500GB Sata drive in my Mac, that would work no doubt.

I'm still wondering whats the ceiling as far as to what the PS3 sees storage wise.
I think this is also awesome for the PS3 in regards to heat. Having the HDD sit outside the PS3 like that takes away one heat source.

That's awesome! I was hoping this would be the case. All you need is an external PSU for the HDD, because the PS3 will cater to the power requirements of 3.5" HDD.
I wonder if someone clever enough will make some App. To allow for a SATA Blu-ray burner to work, powered off Linux on a USB HDD.

Absolutely brilliant!
Now we can go for any speed and any size, and it will not cost a fortune.
This is great, I was a bit worried that I would not be able to store my mp3s and films on a 2.5" drive.
No worries any longer. :)

YouŽd need two SATA connectors for that, so no. :(

Haha, nifty. I bet we see some crappy third party accessory try and glom off this soon enough. The Nyko Ultra 3.5" HDD Caddy!

Awesome! It will be an ugly mod, but it doesn't seem to void the warranty and the advantages are obvious!
Now Sony should release Video recording feature in the future firmware updates!Agreed. I want DVR, even if I need an add-on.

Not necessarily. :)

Would not look that bad, but I guess some nice glossy black cases with SATA connectors will show up on the market quite soon. ;)
Just found this SATA case a must for all MGS fans :

cool i hope some company makes a hardrive attachment that connects to the ps3 so that way it's not open with wires hanging out. i don't want my ps3 looking really ugly.

That's excellent. I have a 250Gb lying around. Just need an enclosure for it.

I would have just gone with a larger SATA 2.5 drive, maybe even a USB drive. This here just looks a bit too tacky for my taste. :quagmire: It is a cheaper solution, though.

Yeah, it may look a bit like the HD-DVD add-on to the 360, I agree on that. :angelgrin
But there will just be a SATA cable coming out of the hole where the 2.5" disk was located, maybe you can still put back the plastic piece back and it will look pretty neat if you find a nice HD SATA case. :)
And don't forget it's not only cheaper, it can be both faster and bigger than any 2.5" HD. :thumbl:
You could make it look like a slightly longer PS3. Put the hard drive on its side and build yourself an enlcosure.

Thats slick, however I heard if you switch hard drives you void your warranty.
Can anyone confirm this?

Until someone confirms otherwise, I would have to write that off as bogus information for the simple fact that the manual lists the directions on how to remove the HDD, no breakable seal on the HDD or its compartment, and it left open for it to easily be removed and upgraded.

Jesus Christ! Why on earth would you do that? :look:
Do you think 360 owners will do that for the HD-DVD add-on?

Yeah, me to. And the fact that both Kutaragi and Harrison mentioned the option of replaceble HD builds a pretty strong case. ;)

Won't there be a 2.5 HDD that's bigger than 60GB like next year:huh: What's the rush?

The Ceiling for 2.5" Drives seems to be in the 100 gig range and around 7,500RPM. If you go above 7,500RPM the cost of the drive starts to skyrocket up.
With a 3.5" Drive you can get a beefy sized HDD with a high RPM.

You can get 120GBs now, this is the drive in my MacBookPro, it's sata 2.5 inch:
Capacity: 111.79 GB
Model: TOSHIBA MK1234GSX
Revision: AH003B
That would slide into a PS3 like a treat... Now where to find another one...
But yeah, if you want to really pimp your ride go 3.5 inch.
This old? http://ps3.ign.com/articles/745/745407p1.html
As its final judgment, Impress recommends that, for now at least, users should avoid a 7,200 rpm drive due to cost and potential heat concerns. Instead, the emphasis should be placed on hard disk size and cache size.
stanDarsh

The rush are standard 3.5" HDDs are a lot cheaper and are a lot larger than 2.5" HDDs. It is much cheaper to buy a 400GB 3.5" HDD than it is to buy a 160GB Notebook HDD!
I personally think what you could do is put the PS3 vertically, and then some 3rd part company could make a stand for it that has a 3.5" space to stick the HDD in.

2.5" are very expensive.
Applefiend
11-12-2006, 01:05 AM
about 120 USD (Kiwi prices) for a 120GB 2.5 inch sata, probably do better in the usa. That's for 5400RPM/8MB cache.
Not the cheapest but good description, one of those would be ideal, no?

Probably work just fine, maybe 16 MB cache give somewhat better performance.
But what size is enough?
It all depends of what you use it for. :)
I will probably go for an external 3.5" disk, and the price of a 500 GB will probably come down a bit before the PS3 launches here to make them attractive, I expect 750 GB disks to be too expensive/byte until the end of next year.
The 2.5" disk that come with PS3 will serve me well as a portable USB disk. :)

yes, i was thinking about getting it and installing a Linux distro on it and use it for testing hardware faults and computer problems.

I'm thinking 120MB will be enough for at least the first 3 years. I got 18 demos and 20 XB Live arcade games on the 13GB left on that, multiply that by 9 that's a lot of space. Shave off 20GB for a linux distro + mame set etc. Plenty.

the problem is that with the PS3's multimedia capabilities there will be lots of DV footage that wil take up bazillions of space. Depends what you'll use your ps3 for.

The mp3s from my own CD collection will require > 20 GB and then I have some more. ;) My photo collection will require quite a few Gigs and will grow even faster when I get a new >8 MP camera sometime in the future.
I am not into the film sharing business, but I might want to get a USB-TV-card to make a full featured HT-system, where I can store TV-programs to the HD. This will probably soon be feasible under Linux and I wouldn't be that surprised if Sony will support it sometime in the future with a firmware upgrade.
You see, my Gigs will fly away if I do all that, beside leaving space for demos, games, films etc. :cowboy:
