It's unclear the container file format of that avc (no mpeg 4 tested , but it would play it) files... I think a-la PSP format...
that is .mp4 but I'm unsure...
The part of wmv is very unclear.... good translation
needed

It says that it does not play WMV files. I guess that could change sometime soon, since PSP can read WMA music files.
Even though Sony stated that the max power consumption would be up to 380 W, they say that even when playing a game it didn't exceed 200 W.

The games may not be pushing the hardware yet, but +180 W may be kind of a stretch.

Yeah. Most games don't use many of the SPE's yet. When they start really using them, the power consumption will go way up.

You can read japanese or your absumnption is based on the phrase translated by google?
However, the WMV file could be indicated, could not play back
the unclear file.
There are some "could"... it's conditional... they are not sure?
What tests they do?
Maybe the phrase can be interpreted as:
However, the WMV files CAN be PLAYED, but not
the crypted ones (DRM?)
However wmv will be surely added (and I hope avi container and others) in future updates... it's a blu ray codec (VC1) and
the capacity is here to play it!

I think it means that it knows that the WMV file is there, but it will say it's corrupted. I read something like this somewhere else.
But I agree on the VC-1 codec. It will surely end up playing WMV files.

Mmm... so wmv appears on xmb but as you try to play it says
"The file is corrupted"?
Then it seems a bug :)
I hope they fix on next update :thumbr:

Yeah :thumbr:
Unlucky it's official... the Ps3 doesn't play avi files...
It's not so "unrestricted" in my opinion as avi (divx) are
the de-facto-standard :realmad

But you should be able to run just about any video type under Linux on PS3 as long as you have the codecs installed (divx too).

Well with Linux + mplayer (or vlc even) there won't be any restriction.
AVI is an old Microsoft container, so that's why it's not supported, I hope the XMB is gonna support .mkv and .ogg though.

well, psp has a .wma update for those files, if enough people demand it they'll put out firmware updates for the formats that we can't read yet.

Obviusly you can use Linux but to see a movie but you have to:
1) Reboot (if you was on Ps3 Games OS)
2) Wait Linux to boot (on PCs this a verrry long process)
3) Log in
4) Wait the system to start
5) Start VLC or mplayer...
6) ...finally see your movie
If in xmb they support avi playing (and mkv, ogg etc...) is more simple and
you can use remote/pad too :tada: (I don't know if it's supported on YDL for
start...)
@pollux
AVI is for sure an old codec mkv and ogg are better, but they are less used
tha avi... is the de-facto-standard... and we can do nothing for that :duh:
There is a way to speed up the process a bit: set the Linux OS as the default os and put the Ps3 on standby when not used (you can?) to avoid the boot
process when you want to play a movie...
If you want to play a game rebbot PS3 and press a button to stop
Linux boot and start XMB and then the game...
