Now that the Jap PS3 is out can anyone confirm which step down transformer will be needed to play it in Europe. Is a 300W / VA one enough or do I have to get 500W/ VA.
Thanks

DO NOT import a PS3 to Europe. It will be crippled. You will pay a lot of money to import one and will be stuck with a unit that cannot play DVDs or Blu-Ray discs (EU is not in the US or JAP region) and you will not be able to play PS1 or PS2 games on it either for the same reason. On top of that, there's no telling if they have any sort of online import protection going on to prevent importers from logging on to the playstation network. With all the things Sony has been doing to prevent importing, I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen. So, you can pay $600 plus shipping to import a box that will only play PS3 games, and probably not even online if you want to, but it would be wise to just wait.

I wonder whether a European firmware update would solve PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility and Blu-ray/DVD playback.
Conversely, would a US PS3 be compatible with PAL stuff by using European firmware?

will the ps3 have a multi region hack for movie playback like many dvd players have?

You'll need one that's >380 Watts by all accounts.

Do not confuse volts and watts, people.

Actually japan is 100V and the US 110V.
But what's 10V between friends...
And if you confuse volts and watts you may end up a christmas decoration. Bzzzz! :)

Isn't the word that the PS3 has a universal power supply? The Japanese units seem prepared to accept both 100 and 220v.

They do? Any links on that.
Think my PS3 comes wednesday but transformer Thursday.
Applefiend:
On the PSU, it says "AC Input 100V-240V~".
This is an image of the powersupply inside the PS3, read the text on the PSU:

Groovy.
No jokes, $499 video game console up in smoke if you're wrong. :)
Applefiend: I would hate myself if that happend, try to google it instead and see if anybody has tried it, or ask here :)
But it would be really stupid of them to write the specs to be 100V-240V and then be wrong about it! :)

There will be no region hacks, not for a while at least. Sony damn sure wouldn't let it happen.

It took a little over a year for hackers to make a custom FW for PSP. This time next year, we'll probably have a region-free firmware.

Since the PSP and PS3 are similar in firmware updates, expect homebrew to do the trick of "region free" if Sony doesn't. I'm sure it will be sooner rather than later frosty. The PSP hackers will have enough working knowledge to get these hacks out quickly.

The JAP/USA/EURO Ps3 are the same in my opinion only the firmware
change :err:
I think it's some sort of protection that don't permit to updgrade a japan Ps3
to a USA firmware... if you can sure USA DVD & Ps1/2 games became playable:twitch:
Circumnivigate this maybe is easy...
A multiregion firmware is a mix of this...
