Shane from 1up said the PS3 looks crappy on a SDTV last week. I only own a SDTV so I'm wondering if its even worth wasting money on right now. Im looking to be blown away by the graphics but if I end up disappointed then there really is no point.

Thanks.

No-one is complaining so far and are pleased with the quality.

Whatever man. Im just a cynical gamer aka jaded. Im asking cause I waited on the 360 for the PS3 launch so I could compare them.

And what the hell is the rep for anyway? As you can see I dont post alot.

Well I think it's fine to go off topic since this thread is pretty useless:
Rep is not for anything but for others to judge you quickly.
So if you have a red bar (like yourself) that means you have made bad posts that other people felt were damaging the community and neg repped you for it. It means most of your posts will be taken with a grain of salt.

If you have lots of green bars (such as myself) that means the community wants to make sexy time with you and every time you post they will have a party.

That pretty much explains it.

make sexy time

That pretty much explains it.

Love that quote lol.

Well, I don't think this thread is useless since I have an older SDTV, but with that said I don't think the quality of the PS3 would be bad on SDTV...I mean the games would at least look better than current gen games.

If you don't at least have a flat screen (480p) I'd just wait-at least until some amazing games come out that don't really matter what resolution there in. (Lair, HS, Unreal) My personal opinion mate...You probably won't find a PS3 this year anyway...

I have an HDTV in the same room as my SDTV, both of which are hooked up to PS3s and playing resistance right now. You can appreciate the quality of the graphics more on the HDTV (especially textures) but the SDTV definitely shows off it's graphics fine enough.

Tony hawk definitely comes off as something that couldn't have been done last gen...haven't tried anything other than Resistance and THP8 though.

In summary, SDTV is A-okay...with component cables anyways.

Can you try with the composite cables? That's the only hookup my TV has.

I think you should take what Shane says with a grain of salt. Common sense will tell you naturally a game would look fine on a sdtv but when you go from hdtv back to sdtv the difference will be much more apparent.

Just like when you play a game that you used to think was gorgeous but you look back and think...i thought this was an attractive game? lol. Same with going from dvd to vhs and back. Let me put it this way. If you played PS2 on sdtv you'll be fine playing PS3 on sdtv.

Playing Genji 1 at the moment, I think even on an SD TV, in composite, you'd see the increase in detail and draw distance from Genji 1 to 2. No question.

I have played mine on the Bravia and off and there isn't that big a difference...

They don't look like Xbox/Ps2 games if that is what you mean?

You aren't missing anything special,I guarentee it.

You can still tell how great the games look. But if you did have an HDTV it'd be crisper and higher rez. I'm gonna have to get one as soon as I can, but I'm enjoying it on my sdtv just the same!

I agree. It still looks pretty damn good on my 27" Toshiba standard definition. I'm sure it looks better in HD, but it's not the difference between night and day or anything.

I'm kinda lazy right now so i'll just paste a response I gave someone on Ps3forms about F1.....oh yeah I don't trust anything that 1ups says along with Kokatu or whatever his name is.....anyway here...

"to me it looks real good........ so far I have tried it on two T.V.s

F1 game

1st tv.... Sharp 27" crt (not flat screen) with composite cables

looks real nice when playing....trees look nice, sky looks nice, cars look nice....overall looks nice....when I say "nice" I mean it good for my expectations for a next gen game......but it looks great for the fact that its on a 480i t.v. I thought it would make a big differense but to me it wasn't........but the replays did not look so good...I can't say why...

2nd tv..... phillips 30" widescreen with ps2 component cables......this is one of the T.V.s that down converts from 720p to 480p

I believed that F1 was going to be 1080p and it might still be......but when I played it on this tv it got down converted to 480p instead of 1080i..... again I believe that most of the games that are having problems with old HDTV crts are 720p games (Motorstorm which still looks great.....and Resistance)

maybe its just that this demo is not outputing in 1080p for now....i don't know......

either way...this thing looks gorgeous, sometimes I just stop and look around at the grass or just the enviroment and also the rain as expected is beautifull.....during the sunny day races the sky looks so nice....

I was really worried about how my PS3 games would look on regular SD tvs or just small screens because when I saw how Madden360 at Bestbuys on a small samsung lcd screen (can't say if it was 720p) it did not look good or next gen.....but when I saw the same game on a big HD screen it looked great.....

PS3 games on regular T.V.s will look really good and won't be a let down.... I would suggest that you try and get a cheap HD crt that can recieve 720p games......these are not expensive and will give you better picture than most $600-$700 720p lcds....."

I was talking about F1.......but as far as Motorstorm.....

when you choose the Bike event, the race is during sunset I believe.....it still looks great....

but when you choose the truck event, the race is during a bright sunnyday.....and this just looks so real its crazy......the lighting on the truck and the environment (I choose the white one) just looks real...... I can't wait for this game to come out.....

this is all on SD 27" 480i.......and the phillips 30" HDTV crt...480p

maybe they still look good on SD tvs because they are CRT and still provide a more natural PQ..

I can't wait to try it on my own T.V. 34" widescreen Sony XBR with DVI crt....this one recieves 720p and converts to 1080i

That's the HDTV I own :) Will sell it as soon as I can get a 1080p SED though, or keep it as a secondary HDTV.

The SDTV pictures look bad, but that has more to do with the camera and the nature of the display than with PS3's video output. LCD screens usually look good on pictures when properly taken.

i think the sdtv pictures look fine. they are definately a huge huge huge step up from the ps2. id say even with an sdtv its still worth getting a ps3. i think the hdtv pics look better and less fuzzy because you took them from a bit more of a distance.

for playing PS2 games on PS3, I don't thinnk they would look any different from playing them on PS2s. since PS3 has an EE/GS chip in it exclusively for running PS2 games, you practically have a PS2 while playing PS2 games on your PS3. maybe the difference in RAM would make faster loadings, but I'm not sure.

by that, i think the only issues PS3 has in running PS2 games on HDTVs is playing them using HD itself and not an issue from PS3.

maybe someone could shed some moe light on this.

BTW, has anyone done a comparsion of how does the games actually look at higher resolutions such as 480p and 576p, that are not considerred as HD? (is it not 720p where the line goes?).
