Finally 3.0 PSP firmware is out... watching here (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/psp/current/video/filetypes.html)
you can see that there is avi support but only with mjpeg codec support...
It's a start and they could support avi if they wanted...
it's a pity that they support this strange codecs and not divx...
This thread is in the Ps3 section because i think is somewhat PS3 related too...

i think that is not a strange route .. they are supprting it due to that MJPEG is the codec supported by the video camera for PSP

Ahh so the PSP camera will use avi/mjpeg... now understand the avi support...
I hope in the future they'll add divx/xvid codec too...

It doesnt surprise me why they went with mjpeg.
sony just want you to buy bigger zise Mem pro duo :) .. mjpeg takes alot of space compared to many other formats.. its some kind of losless movie format.
for example 1 min of 3gp, divx, mpeg2 with decent bitrates takes only 1-5mb of space, while MJPEG more then 20-25mb.

If i remember correctly, in order for a hardware device to support divx decoding, a license fee must be paid to the divx makers, for every device. xvid is free though (IIRC).
If you take into account the millions of PSP and PS3 out there, then you can understand why there is no divx support yet.
File size does matter, but also cutting costs...
