Alright, well this has actually been done for a couple of days now, but I've been refining it a little here and there.
Fedora 5 Installation (http://linuxps3.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=33&Itemid=32)
No reason why everybody shouldn't experiment with Linux in my opinion, what with the ease of actually getting it on the system. :smoke:
Anyway I'm going to start (as I get a chance) doing specific software tests as well, so if you have any requests for a test or any suggestions on how to refine the guide, let me know.
I'm extremely busy of late though, so understandably I may be slow to get to things.
great XB!
hope the lucky ones with PS3s could give us feedback after trying this out. :)

Hey XBD, this thread seems like a prime candidate for "Sticky" status.

Sounds good - we can leave it up for people to examine for a while. I truly do believe that if we can get the Playstation community actively involved as a microchosm of the Linux community in general, great things could happen this gen.
I'm going to be running some tests tonight as well on resolution settings within Linux. I often choose to run at the default low-res when messing around just because my set suffers from an overscan issue which obscures the entire menu interface from me; without in-GNOME underscan support, I thought it would outright require a different display, but now I think there may be something else to try.

Any idea if YDL will be more optimized for the PS3 than Fedora? I'd like to wait until I know I'm getting some serious power out of Linux before installing...

I would say this - even running unoptimized code on a generic PPC distro, Cell and Linux are already doing pretty well for themselves 'power' wise. But then again, I'm not sure exactly what you have in mind to do. ;)
I *do* think/hope that YDL will have some notable advantages, but at the same time:
1) To install YDL on Monday will require a monetary expenditure, so most people will probably be waiting until late December to use it anyway when it becomes available on public mirrors (I'll be installing on Monday though to give my insights)
2) You have to partition your hard drive at some point to install Linux - YDL or Fedora - so might as well do it sooner rather than later when you have more info to back up and/or lose (and so why not install Fedora while you're at it?)
3) Messing around with Fedora will both help one appreciate what Linux/PS3 can do (it really is impressive!), and is something that can simply be written over with the new OS (YDL) when you choose to do so.
Hope those arguments are good ones. :smoke:

XB-I don't have a DVD burner, only a CD one...Will I still be able to install YDL?
One more question..Can PS3 guys do that crazy "Flip the entire desktop" thing I saw on youtube?

@Yes It's Me: It's a side project of mine, yeah. Just took it live quite recently.
@Omni: Normally for Fedora you'd be ok with a couple of CDs, but in PS3s case I believe a DVD is required for the initial install. But if you wanted to try it, I'd definitely be more than happy to mail you a burned Fedora DVD all ready to go. That's how strongly I believe in the mission. :smoke:

Sixaxis for Linux:
The SIXAXIS controller can be used on any Linux machine, not just the PS3. When connected via USB, it's basically a USB HID joystick with it has a few quirks that prevent it from working properly. An appropriate patch to fix it can be found on the Cell Linux source CD. The motion sensing doesn't work yet.
More info & patch: http://ps3.jim.sh/sixaxis/usb/
The SIXAXIS controller can be used on Windows PC:
As is the case with it under Linux(jimparis's post), it works as USB HID device that needs special initialization under Windows.
The instruction to make it to work properly is as follows:
1. Download (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=78138) and install the filter driver in libusb-win32 (libusb-win32-filter-bin-x.x.x.x.exe).
2.Download (http://www.padc.cs.tsukuba.ac.jp/~k1/ps3sixaxis_en.zip) ps3sixaxis_en.zip from here (http://www.padc.cs.tsukuba.ac.jp/~k1/ps3sixaxis_en_win.html).
3. Unpack ps3sixaxis_en.zip.
4. Plug the SIXAXIS into your PC.
5. Run ps3sixaxis_en.exe once.
6. Push the PS button on the SIXAXIS once if it seems to be sleeping.
