very interesting...but this is rather dumb...what's the point of emulating an OS on top of an OS:huh: This is more of "Look what the PS3 can do" than anything practical...

It shows off the potential of Linux on the PS3. But it could also be used for people more comfortable with the WinXp os. I know it doesn't make much since because if your installing Linux on the PS3 then most likely you know more then your average/casual gamer and wouldn't have any desire for it.
But hey..you never know lol.

Now they just need to allow Linux to use the RSX!

seems very slow but not too bad, it is only the ppe after all (while running 3 OS's at the same time!)

Doing things like that isn't illegal, right?
If it is, I'm willing to bet Sony's going to find a way to end it like with the PSP.
I highly doubt something like that could be legal on a console that it wasn't intended for. [But I could always be wrong.]

Yeah, there's nothing illegal about it...
and if it was illegal, you could be sure it would be Microsoft that would be upset rather than Sony. As far as Sony's concerned, anything happening inside of the 'Other OS' partition is all good. But what's happening there is that the person emulated an x86 environment, and actually installed Windows onto his system. It's not a 'fake' Windows that's running, it's a real Windows on a 'fake' x86 PC.

its, perfectly legal. In fact i am doing it right now on my pc. xp vmwared in ubuntu, gonna try some 3d games later. see what happens.
But this is different because it is x86 on PPC

The PS3 is just so freaking awesome. Now, I want to see Vista.

Vista would probably run terribly slow lol, considering what kind of GPU solution you need to run Vista competently in addition to the part where it doesn't seem like anyone has access to the RSX lol.

Say if one wasn't some computerly literate and wanted to get Windows on their PS3. You think it would be possible for an old chap like me...I mean my "friend" to figure it out, or should they not even try.
Linux scares me

you won't get windows running natively any time soon(if at all)

Lol care to teach me?
Also, the whole everything running on one PPE is cool and all, but how long do u guys think before we can start seeing OS's using ALL the SPE's? Wait, doesn't Yellow Dog do this? Even the one shut down for red. issues? Ever think we're gonna see the RSX in the mix? Kinda hoping to see the PS3 become my new desktop =) (Can't make smilys on the PS3 for some reason).

I think it's more important that the apps are using the SPEs, not so much the OS. Linux doesn't need much power to run does it? Or can apps only use the SPEs with the OS using them too?

linux can be extremely light and low profile.
If you want to run win on top of Linux using the cell you will need some skill and do some research into the matter.
However if you are running just another ppc OS it is easy as pie.
