View Full Version : Ps3 Os?
I thought the PS3 OS was reserving something like 50-90MB of RAM and that this was needed because the OS is constantly running in the background? But the OS isn't running in the background. You have to quit a game to get to the XMB and you cant do things like download demos or web browse while a game is paused. I thought that was the whole point of the new PS3 OS, not that it could do all these things but that it could do all these things simulataneously.

I can't remember which thread I saw it in, but I remember a post saying that the game had to give up a certain amount of RAM when the OS requested it. I could be wrong though.
To me, that means the games get almost all the RAM in the PS3 for use.

It's running in the background the entire time.
Now, it may not be doing much right now... but it's running all the same.

its cynical i know, but if you wanted everyone online wouldn't you encourage this by periodically offering updates? its a business after all...

They really need better integration with the dashboard and games. The rescources are there they need to be used.

If it's running in the background why do I need to quit a game to access it?

Because they haven't decided to implement anything yet.
They will probably wait and see if they have an security issues, watch and see what teh compeition does, things like that before they update.
By offering it as an update it is also something that they can market when the PS3 is already out. People see the PS3 and think yea it's the PS3. But if they update it then it will be yea its the PS3 with the latest update!
It's a consumer mindeset thing imo

I would fault Sony for launching a console that needs so much work, but considering how few they will be able to ship I guess its makes sense to just get things started and update as they go.

So you think that things like being able to download demos while playing a game simultaneously can be updated later?

Of course. It's all software afterall. I to think their sitting it out abit and reviewing their options.

Beside, if they need to add new features, it's better to have those reserve ram reserved and tell the developers exactly how much ram is reserve. Instead of not reserving enough ram in the first place.

This obviously may cause your game to run slower if your playing a game on multiplayer.

I dont think PS3 is eating RAM memory when OS and game is only functioning.
Maybe this is how PS3 works:
You know about OS to Game switching??? So OS goes to hibernation that uses some minimal resources while game is on, maybe even some virtual memory on your HDD. While switching to OS while game is on pause, OS takes info on game current state and writes somewhere on HDD, something like savegame.
For downloading something from internet while playing game, even mulitplayer, depends on your internet speed, that even goes for PC. Maybe download goes directly on HDD without using RAM memory. And mostly of all that is why HDD is implemented in PS3, to use it as a virtual RAM for some functions.

Very true and I doubt that there would be enough bandwith to supply both feeds. But I see no reason why one couldnt play sp and download.
