If you were not lucky enough to wait in line or get a preorder for that PS3 you really want; but you have 1337 hacking skills, then this is your chance.

If you can hack this PS3 (http://ps3.shimpinomori.net/index_en.html) and replace the image displayed on the site, then you win the PS3 that it is running on. No DOS or "dirty" attacks. You will also have to put a text file with you name and postal address in the root user's home directory, inside the "ps3_challenge" subfolder. No other alteration of the PS3's files is permitted.

What you will win
The PS3 with all its default accessories (note: the hard disk was replaced with a 160 GB hard disk!)
HDMI cable
Linux (Fedora core 5 PPC + PS3 add-on) preinstalled
The game "Resistance - the fall of Man".

The deadline is January 2007, so time to get cracking for all you hackers out there.

I'm gonna tell you right now, this is going to be virtually impossible.....I doubt there will be a winner.

Nah, it's simply a pretty weak linux server running a webpage.

Coded-Dude
11-27-2006, 06:45 PM
pretty weak....lol - wtf is that supposed to mean?
You think this guy wants to give his PS3 away?

Linux is the kernel and it is not weak at all.
The web-server it is running may have vulnerabilities, but I am sure he did everything he could to ensure a secure OS.

But if you think its that easy, I guess that means you'll have it hacked by the end of the day.....

Wait, so are you hacking the ps3 network? or the ps3 itself? and if you have a ps3 to hack, why would you need to hack one to win one?

Krunk confused!!!

Coded-Dude

lol......no he has linux running on his PS3.

If you think you can hack(log onto the box and gain root privilages) his linux operating system, and prove it.....he will give you the PS3 that is runnign the linux. This is a challenge to anyone who thinks linux is unsecure.

I'm not a hacker, so no. I'm just saying that it's not as hard as everyone says.

not being a hacker....what makes you an expert on the subject?
Because I am an expert on the subject, and I am telling you it is that hard....

i don't think this would be very possible at the moment... IMHO i think it will take several months more for people to get through at all.

Nameless

Well it's good to know you can run a PS3 non-stop for several days/weeks...

It's nice to read on that french forum how they are trying to hack it and what methods they already tried.

false......the only way to hack into the box is to use KNOWN security flaws.
(unless of course you discover a NEW security flaw - but that takes serious hacking skills)
Most known security flaws should have already been addressed by the software company(fedora in this case) or the system administrator(via manual and/or automatic updates)

I did it, too bad I don't want a PS3.

Actually, whilst on the site I simply click the ads because I like what he's doing.

For those keeping track... The contest is over. I almost forgot about it. But the slow news day, and the hypervisor hack got me thinking about it again. http://ps3.shimpinomori.net/index_en.html

Coded-Dude

lol, he even offered to give users a shell based account for one month(for $20).
But then again, I guess linux users are too dumb to hack their own os......
(MS users must be much more proficient at hacking)

Z

what does he mean by a 'shell account'?

Coded-Dude
02-05-2007, 09:54 PM
basically you woudl have nothiong more than a command line interface to the system.
No graphical poitning/clicking.....just typing commands.
